And what you get for it

Thinking of quitting Specsavers after some annoying incidents but they ARE cheap (£12 a month)

Very much depends on the type of lens you have. I pay around £55 for 90 pairs of lenses but don't bother with a subscription.
They are Acuvue Oaysis.

PeonyBlushSuede · 12/11/2024 12:41

I'm with Specsavers but have to have specialist lenses so £30 a month!

If you know the prescription and type you can buy them online - you just then have to go to the opticians once a year and get the prescription and eye health checked. They do charge for it but not a huge amount.

Cause of the specialist lenses this worked out the same price for me but would have to buy 3 months lenses at a time, so sticking with Specsavers for now

Maray1967 · 12/11/2024 12:42

£50. I have varifocal lenses which are pricy. The fee covers everything - all checkups and lenses posted to my door. I go to a very good optician - been with him many years. I won’t go anywhere else. I justify it by saving elsewhere so I prioritise it. I never get my nails done or spray tans etc and don’t spend much on my hair.

Oreyt · 12/11/2024 12:43

£22

Magicisuponus · 12/11/2024 12:45

I’m with Vision Express and pay currently £29

meeeeeee1234 · 12/11/2024 12:46

Can I ask what your annoying incidents were OP?
I pay £10 a month for just the lenses (1 normal lens and 1 toric lens).
But I recently had my 3 month supply delivered and all 3 of the toric lenses were split and apparently from a bad batch. I felt the response was quite flippant.
It's really made me question specsavers.

The optometrist was quite inexperienced and suggested there was something wrong with my optic nerve after I paid for that extra scan thing. Some chaos ensued and I freaked out for about a month thinking I was going blind (my dad is blind from glaucoma) then went to boots for a second opinion where they said which optic nerve there are two (which I knew but in my alarm had failed to register) then er no that's a normal short sighted PAIR of optic nerves.

They also phoned my mum's house when I didn't answer my mobile immediately and when she said this is an old number she hasn't lived here in c. three decades they told her oh let her know she has to come in to see them asap about the optic nerve thing so ofc then I get hassle from my mum like I'm 17 again.

I haven't been able to face going back since so they're sending me an ancient prescription while I separately just buy the right stuff on vision direct because even though they've updated my prescription in their computer they can't start sending me the right product until I "get them fitted in store"??? And store is a fecking pain miles away.

Ok I just need to cancel the DD now. Click!

I just buy them when I need them from whoever is cheapest online.

For 30 pairs it's usually £35-£40 every month.

I sometimes buy a cheaper brand for my left eye which can cope with anything, but can only buy the clariti silicon hydrogel for my right eye as the diameter has to be 14.2

Soupwithstring · 12/11/2024 12:56

OP, you don't need to get contacts fitted.

I've never even shown a prescription online. I just type in my details and they send the contacts.

I know right they're just being difficult and it annoys me. Send me working eyes!

I buy them for £5 a month from a HK based optician.

Delatron · 12/11/2024 13:02

I pay around £30 per month with contactlenses direct. These are the daily contact lenses with extra moisture ( Acuvue).

I tried Specsavers but they gave me an inferior brand which they claimed was the same and my eyes hated them. They just didn’t listen. And they took ages to arrive and I had to go and collect them in person.

Wordsmithery · 12/11/2024 13:44

I stopped wearing contact lenses after about 30 years because Specsavers made such a mess of my prescription, my lenses were always uncomfortable and my vision not great. I now use an independent optician for my glasses and they are fab.
I know you can get cheap lenses online but personally I'd pay to get them fitted and checked regularly by a decent optician who you trust. Your eyesight is far too important to skimp on.

yutulin · 12/11/2024 14:05

I don't do a subscription, I buy dailies that cost £15 for 30 pairs (Day Soft), I don't wear them every day and prefer dailies as they're thinner and don't have the bother of cleaning etc.

Delatron · 12/11/2024 14:16

Yep I did get my initial prescription from an optician and continue to get my eyes checked regularly- I just take that exact prescription and buy them online.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 12/11/2024 16:22

About £30 a month. In fact you've just reminded me to ring them up to see if my next lot have come in

tulippa · 12/11/2024 16:24

About £20 per month I think. I also get a free eye test and a free pair of glasses each year with.

OnTheBounce · 12/11/2024 16:25

About £30 a month for 30 pairs from Boots, but I do that mainly because of the discount on glasses and extra 10% off in store. I only wear them for the gym so tend to build up a surplus, so I'm forever putting it on hiatus. In fact, you've just reminded me to order new glasses, and cancel.

Yes you do need to get contacts fitted. The usual process is they order in or give you trial contact lenses that you try to see which are more comfortable. For the fitting appointment, you put them in 2hrs before and then they look at the contact lenses on your eye to ensure they are fitting well. Not sliding about. Not causing irritation, etc.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 12/11/2024 16:27

Mine are £139 for 90 day supply, but I have a high prescription and tend to go for the best out there for eye health so they are expensive.

This doesn’t include costs of annual eye exam and tests.

PassCaring · 12/11/2024 16:29

Specsavers held their price for mine at £10 for over 15 years. It was only last year they put it up a quid. They have dropped the frequency of check ups to 24 months and must be cutting corners elsewhere. They randomly stopped sending them and it was a right faff getting them started again. Branch was useless. However I am still with them because they are cheap.

Whattodointherain · 12/11/2024 16:29

I pay £45 a month with specsavers. I now feel I am paying too much!

I have been getting contact lenses for eons and they are fine. Just send them to me and stop wasting my life minutes! God it's objectionable.

I do sometimes wonder if they just want me off the books for being too cheap.

I have been a contact wearer for 38 years.
It is not a waste of your life minutes.
It is an important health and safety requirement.
