And what you get for it

Thinking of quitting Specsavers after some annoying incidents but they ARE cheap (£12 a month)

I have been a contact wearer for 38 years.
It is not a waste of your life minutes.
It is an important health and safety requirement.

No it's a customer unfriendly pain in the arse.

About £20 per month I think. I also get a free eye test and a free pair of glasses each year with.

Free glasses 😲😲

No, it is a health and safety requirement.

Daysoft online @£15 per month when I buy 3 months supply (96 pairs). I have no problems with them.

scintilla87 · 17/11/2024 15:45

Errrr where am I going wrong here? I’m paying £80 per month from Lenstore.

I do have astigmatism though and super dry eyes so need dailies but wow, I feel like I’m being fleeced reading this thread.

Projectme · 17/11/2024 15:50

£52 pm for orthOK lenses. This includes all solutions and 2 x contact lenses check per year and 1 x eye test/check up a year. Plus any emergency/ad hoc appointments plus free lense replacement if I lose one/both

I'm with Specsavers, and I pay £36

Soupwithstring · 12/11/2024 12:56

OP, you don't need to get contacts fitted.

I've never even shown a prescription online. I just type in my details and they send the contacts.

Yes, contact lenses need to be fitted by an optometrist or other registered professional to ensure they fit properly and your eyes are healthy

Although I pay £15 per month for dailies, I’m currently doing a trial of toriq lenses for astigmatism but at £65 per month I won’t be carrying on with them. So expensive and they make no noticeable difference but I guess it depends how bad your astigmatism is.

Greatandsmall · 17/11/2024 16:18

With boots and pay £26 a month for a 30 day supply

No it's a customer unfriendly pain in the arse.

It’s a legal requirement.
it’s also a good idea, as we can detect problems before they become serious.

I’ve been an optometrist for a long time and at least once a week someone comes in with a serious problem which would have been easily treated if they’d only come in sooner. (And the contact lens ones are usually the ones who say - ‘but I’ve worn contact lenses for years).

Saucery · 17/11/2024 16:22

About £32 per month from Lenstore, but I have the checks and eye tests done at my nearest Boots. Had my lenses from Boots too years ago but they refused to give me even 10 days worth to tide me over Christmas one year when their delivery was ‘lost’ so I switched to Lenstore. They never try to hard sell me the lenses, just recommend what type I need to get from Lenstore and their opticians are excellent so I don’t mind paying the fee for eye tests and checks.

doodleschnoodle · 17/11/2024 16:28

I buy ad hoc from Vision Direct. £26 for 30 days of dailies.

I've been using daysoft for 18 years currently £17/M just need a current prescription, the lenses are delivered to your door, absolutely no fuss and good lenses, daily disposable.

wiltywinnie · 17/11/2024 16:30

Does anyone have varifocal contact lenses from Specsavers? How much are you paying? Am about to trial these but stupidly didn't ask how much they'd be if I changed to them. Currently paying £15/month - no solutions for single vision lenses

Meeeeeeeeep · 17/11/2024 16:37

£21 at boots for midrange toric lenses (for astigmatism) and solution.

I contemplated switching to Specsavers because I moved and Specsavers is now closer, but the clueless service put me off. And Boots is marginally cheaper.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/11/2024 16:50

I stopped getting mine from Specsavers when they sent me the wrong lenses and insisted I had to go into store to sort it out rather than sending the correct ones to my home. I just buy them online when I need them now.

I'm also annoyed that Specsavers have put me on a 2 yearly recall rather than yearly. DM was blind with glaucoma and macular degeneration and I was told previously I would be able to have annual eye tests. They didn't even want to do it when I said I'd pay for it.

JWKD · 17/11/2024 16:59

If you get tested for lenses in Specsavers, do they give you enough information to order elsewhere? I needed glasses a few years ago and they gave me the prescription, but they wouldn't tell me the distance between my pupils, which I needed to order glasses elsewhere.

YessicaHaircut · 17/11/2024 17:08

I pay £18 a month with Specsavers. But like you OP I find them an utter pain in the arse. There is one large branch in the city centre, which I can get to without too much hassle but I don’t go into town much these days. There’s another much smaller branch in a nearby seaside town which would be really convenient, MIL lives in this town and we visit pretty regularly as it’s a nice day out. So you would think I could just pop in there for a quick appointment when we’re there anyway. This was ok for a few visits and now suddenly they have decided I am only allowed to have appointments at the city centre branch, something about it being a franchise which I’m still not clear on! It’s all part of the same company that is getting my money, surely?! Drives me mad.

I don't think they do. They didn't even check the distance on me this time (I didn't realise until afterwards) and I'm not getting on with my new glasses so I need to go back.

Itoldyousoo · 17/11/2024 17:47

Your glasses and your contact lenses are completely different things.

I pay 50 a month with Boots for dailies but you get 1/2 price glasses, sunglasses with that and other discount on your Boots shopping. They are on top of the checks you need. You can't mess with your eyes.

Itoldyousoo · 17/11/2024 17:47

I meant glasses and contact lens checks and tests.

Justleaveitblankthen · 17/11/2024 18:09

Yes, Specsavers are very proactive when it comes to appointments - and also upselling special scans of optic nerves@£10 a time/ needing a stronger prescription (so buy new glasses every time)

This is my own experience. Am refusing the scan next time 🤨

I pay £18.50 I think, for monthly disposables. I have astigmatism. It would be slightly less if I didn't.

Dr13Hadley · 17/11/2024 18:29

£22 a month with boots. Get advantage points, half price glasses and sunglasses and eye test / contact lens checks are included. Also have the option to pause payment for a few months if I get a backlog. Mine are the acuvue oasys fortnightly ones. High prescription as I'm very short sighted.

twilighteaser · 17/11/2024 18:33

€59 every other month for 90 daily Acuvue Oasys off Amazon. I'm in Italy, lenses can be bought anywhere without prescription, not sure if Amazon UK do them.
