What is it about men ? ( in swimming pools)

Another argument in the pool today. Several lanes available to share…one with 2 guys , ours with 2 women and one mixed. The man who arrived later chose ours. Nearly headed into me at 50 mph. I challenged him and suggested he moved into the lane next door with faster male swimmers. He said that he did not want to swim in the lane with the side of the pool. I said my preference was to swim in peace with other women and why was it that my preference was seen as not as important as his . He insisted that he would stay . I told him it was a macho view and we women should have our views and wishes given the same weight. So fed up that again an entitled male pushed it even when challenged.

Just in from late swim as it happens, not many want to swim at 10pm pm a Friday, suits me perfectly! 3 of us tonight! lane to myself.

Wow! You sound a little crazy and agenda-driven.
Live and let live.

The further away from the pool wall the faster the lane, therefore if you wanted a leisurely swim you should swim in the lane closest to the wall regardless of the sex of the other swimmers so yes YABU

Nope. At our pool the fast lane is the one by the wall.

Pool local to me closes at 7.30, and is only open some nights. In fact the awful opening hours were another reason I cancelled membership. You're lucky to have such late opening.

They keep changing it at my local pool. 🫣

'What is it with men in swimming pools?'

Well that's a bit of a generalisation there, isn't it? You are talking about one particular man who wanted to swim in the same lane you were in.

No designated lane for speed or sex and it's a public pool open to all?

I can't really see what he did wrong?

Because they are bloody expensive.... and they only slightly help because they don't suit my prescription. It's not really any of your business

I wear them to the pool side, leave glasses with towel, don't have "equipment" with me and have to try and judge other people around me as best as I can.

I think you misconstrued my post. I was trying to share the wonder I felt when someone told me about prescription goggles. It was a game-changer. I paid around £20 from decathlon and they’ve lasted me years. I’m verrrrrry short-sighted but the -6 ones are enough to off-set the blindness and have really helped me feel more confident in where I am.

I don’t quite understand the snidey inverted commas on ‘equipment’ or being told it’s “not any of my business”.

Probs a good thing we don’t have to share a lane. I tend to be really friendly with fellow swimmers 😊

Edited

What he did wrong was to automatically assume that his right to have his preference met took precedence over mine to have my preference met.

Didn't you do the same in reverse?

With no rules regarding lanes designated by sex or speed, at a public baths, I still cannot see what anyone has done wrong here?

You made what seemed like a snide comment about prescription googles. It's wasn't "have you considered prescription googles? Decathlon do some good, cheap ones." It was quite a blunt comment instead.

And it is none of your business why I don't wear them. I've tried them. They don't work for me and to get ones that do is expensive for just causal swimming.

There are "" around equipment because it was a quote. And I don't have any equipment or fins because not everyone does!

You're coming off as a swimming snob here not me tbh.

And you've no idea how I am with other people. Frankly you seem rude.

Or because you are a woman, the man is automatically in the wrong? You say he "nearly headed into you", so he didn't actually crash into you. So actually, the real story would seem to be that a man decided to swim faster than you in the same lane as you and you didn't like it. If there are no lane rules as to speed or sex then he has the right to choose his preference of lane for whatever reason.

FoxLoxInSox · 29/11/2024 22:51

@MartinCrieffsLemon I literally don’t know what your problem is with me or why you’ve been so prickly. Why are you calling me a swimming snob, putting passive aggressive quote marks round my words (to mock me and for some reason take the piss out of me sharing that I can’t see my kit without my goggles)? You seem to have taken my post wrongly, ignored my attempt to iron it out, and have come back fighting even harder, having even more of a go. You don’t know me, and I’m not in any way a swimming snob! Quite the opposite. I’ve never had a lesson, and felt very conscious of my inability to swim properly so I’ve taught myself aged 43, worked really hard at it, and feel proud of myself for learning something new despite poor self-belief and embarrassment, and my age. So no, I’m not a swimming snob. Your impression of me is unfair and frankly quite hurtful & aggressive.

Whatever. Crack-on.
