To think it's rude to let your kid sit on a video call eating and slurping away?

My brother always does it. I'm fed up of seeing and hearing my nephew eating. They are 5. It's gross. I don't know why he does it. Aibu to just ignore the call as it's rude or is this what people do with their kids.

I'm not sure I could get that worked up about this in a 5 year old. If the sound is really bothering you then I'd ask that he move a bit further away from the mic!

But this is mn and all bodily noises and normal functions and apparently disgusting

curlywurlymum · 11/11/2024 16:03

My sister loves apples. She also loves ‘multitasking’ and calling someone whenever she grabs an apple. It’s horrendous and she’s been told off so many times but laughs it off and still does it. Occasionally she starts a juicy story to trick us into not hanging up, then she starts the biting, chewing and speaking at the same time. 😩😭

Muthaofcats · 11/11/2024 16:04

Anyone eating on a video call is gross

It's only because he's hoping my daughter is with me but I always lie and say she's out or in the bath as I don't want her picking up the habit

Now you’re just being odd

Dinoswearunderpants · 11/11/2024 16:08

You're the best Aunty! How can a child eating trigger you so much!

muggletops · 11/11/2024 16:08

I wouldn't like it either. Just say call me back when you've finished eating darling, its bad manners to talk and eat.

You'd rather lie than parent your own child?

Blimey.

Brefugee · 11/11/2024 16:13

lasagnelle · 11/11/2024 15:56

They aren't. The kid basically calls me up to talk with their mouthful or crunch peppers and watermelons at me while I talk

nah, that would drive me mad.

IceSkates · 11/11/2024 16:22

He’s 5 year’s old. You’re the adult.

I think you lying about your dd being out or in the bath is worse.

bumblingbovine49 · 11/11/2024 16:33

I thought this was a post about a colleague allowing their child to sit in on a call and eating while they did. This I would see as completely reaonable to object to. A social call? - less so. I have often wondered why it is considered awful to eat on a video call (assuming it is a social call) yet meeting to have a meal or a drink together in a restaurant or at home at the dinner table is normal

Maybe have a word with the parent and say you suffer from 'miserable old fart syndrome' (don't worry we can all be subejct to this, I am sometimes too) but that this mean you just can't bear the sound and sight of someone eating when you are on a video all so could their child wait until the call is finished before they eat. This way you make the request but acknowledge that you may be being a bit unreasonable (which you probably are). Nonetheless it does get on your nerves so could they do you a favour? If you have a reasonable relationship with your nephew's parent (your sibling/in-law?) this could work

Alternatively just say you can't stand your nephew, they are a bad influence on your own (undoubtedly younger) precious child and you don't want to waste time talking to them. This is probably closer to what you actually would like to say (by the general tone of your post anyway) and if that is the case, maybe you need rethink your contact level with the family generally

MumOfOneAllAlone · 11/11/2024 16:39

My dd makes the funniest noises when she eats 😄😄😄, she could be eating chicken nuggets and the noises of appreciation she makes, makes it seem like she's eating a michelin star meal! 🤭🤭

Buy yanbu op, it does sound a bit much

Instead of the habits of judging and lying Grin

Fair point!

Because I can't hear a word they're saying and I don't want to see their food. The whole call is for me or my daughter to entertain my nephew while they munch on a snack

What should I say then? Once you stop eating DD can join us?

Or you can let your daughter join the call, chat with her cousin and if there’s an issue later on, explain that some people do things differently to you and that she isn’t allowed to eat on a FaceTime call. Exactly the same as when you encounter any other behaviour you don’t personally allow, in any other area of life.

It’s not difficult.

Honestly, unless you have some other issue with the call, I think you need to be the bigger person and suck it up.

If the calls are otherwise inconvenient, then by all means decline them.

IAKnowyou · 11/11/2024 16:57

I think it says a lot about you as an aunt if your 5 year old nephew disgusts you simply by eating.

elliejjtiny · 11/11/2024 16:58

My in-laws used do so this during covid, it would drive me nuts. We have a no food/drink at the computer rule so my dc didn't have snacks but the dns did. Pil used to say that looks yummy, can I have some or similar and dns would hold the food up to the camera and PIL would pretend to eat it, all done over enthusiastically. My younger 2 dc used to cry because they thought it was real and they didn't understand why they couldn't have their cousins pass them food through the camera.

OldGreyBoots · 11/11/2024 17:00

I'm assuming your PIL ate with their mouth shut and didn't stick the phone right up to their face

Christ, you're a grown woman OP.

If you don't want to talk to the child while he's eating, just tell him you'll ring him back!

So much unnecessary drama and lies.

I don't think it does. I think it says a lot about my misophonia perhaps. But that's usually triggered by my husband in person.

I’d hang up, I wouldn’t be hanging around for a story from someone speaking with their mouth full. Grim.
