To think many designer bags I see are actually fakes

Talking at work about designer bags and I mentioned that when our mortgage is paid off I’d maybe treat myself to a fancy bag. Colleague mentioned that many designer bags we see out and about are fake

thinking about it: many that I see carrying Chanel, goyard, LV etc bags could be fake. I would have no idea how to check or not.

You don’t need an expensive bag every day so of course a Zara bag can stand in. I do the same. Just depends what you are doing.

When do you need an expensive bag?

I have a Mulberry & an Isabel Marant but I can't afford the actual designer bags I would love. There's just no way I would buy or carry a fake. It would really bother me even if i was the only one who could tell

It's the principle for me.

So I buy other nice mid-range bags from Maje, campomaggi, Polene, Whistles & Ally Capellino ba&sh etc. I'm much happier with a decent leather bag from somewhere like that than a fake Gucci.

I absolutely judge the bag wearer by the rest of the appearance - hair, teeth, jewellery & shoes are indicators & I make a judgement on whether a bag is real or not depending on these.

Do you only judge designer bag wearers or does everyone get assessed?

TizerorFizz · 13/11/2024 09:24

@Toastthemosttoo When the occasion suits me! I pick and choose clothes in the same way. Many people mix high street and high end. Why not? I choose what I wear according to my priorities that day and which bag I use. Cannot say I use the Chanel bag much but others are used quite a bit. I like to keep them looking good!

It’s the other way around ime. 21 year olds are more likely to have the disposable income to buy expensive bags / have it bought for them.

I'd be inclined to agree with you on mid-range. But not one that expensive.

I saw a woman on the train—dressed in a very ordinary way, a bit dishevelled maybe, clinging very tightly onto her Mulberry like it was the most precious thing in the world to her. I'm sure it was real, but it made me feel a bit sad. I just wondered what the story was behind it?

You've answered your own question in your post: she was on a train. I'd be holding my Mulberry for dear life on the train too!

I have two designer pieces, a Gucci bag and a Hermes belt. I refuse to wear both now thanks to the rise in folk wearing fakes. It takes the shine off them for me.

What irks me most is children at DDs school who are head to toe in these fakes, or "dupes" as my DD calls them and she can't understand why we won't buy her the fakes. It makes other kids feel less. If you can't afford it, don't pretend you can.

I was in a cafe not so long ago and a girl beside me had lovely adidas trainers on, I commented on them and she was delighted to tell me they were fake off some website! Adidas isn't even unaffordable!!

Except it is. For some people. She likely may not want to advertise to her peers that she's less well off and this allows her to do that.

I have taken my Bottega into B & M and Primark recently!

Shopping in B&M and Primark would enable me to afford a Bottega 😂😂

Jez what an uncomfortable way to travel, do you avoid mixing with the public?

CrushOnEminem · 13/11/2024 10:57

@Toastthemosttoo this thread was specifically asking whether the majority of designer bags are fake or not & I answered how I might consider this.

As I said earlier in the thread. I don't really have designer bags so no skin in this game.

I travel a lot & I absolutely love people watching. I love style & seeing how people present themselves.

It's not personal! But I think we all make snap judgements all the time about the people around us - both good & bad. Sometimes we're right & sometimes we're wrong..it's life

Er, no. It was a lighthearted comment.

However, on a serious note, you probably don't need reminding that thieves do operate on public transport. So it's wise to keep a close eye on your belongings - designer or not.

Pippy2022 · 13/11/2024 12:33

As others have said its how you wear/present your bag including your entire outfit.

Eyelash extensions? Tracksuit? Then bag is a fake.

Understated well thought out fashion? Could be real.

I'm a mid range type person.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 13/11/2024 13:04

Interesting. I got a Chanel bag for my 18th, nearly 20 years ago now, so obviously it was much cheaper. I got a Chanel purse for Christmas the same year and my now husband bought me a Chanel bag for my 21st, so my first Chanel items were all at a young age as gifts, I didn’t buy my own until I was 25 or 26, so I think I’m inclined to agree with a pp that if see a someone in their early 20s or late teens I it’s a gift. Having said that I don’t generally assume people carry fakes but I can’t say I see loads of Chanel/hermes bags on a day to day basis! Edit- I thought I was quoting @Jumpingthruhoops but obv did something wrong!

As they do anywhere restaurants, cafes, pubs etc! If you are so terrified of losing a bag that you draw attention to yourself clinging onto it for dear life - it surely takes away from the pleasure of having a lovely bag or maybe it's all worth it. 😎

Not 'terrified'. Like I said, it was just a light-hearted comment.

You seem to be very invested in a topic you claim to have no interest in.

When did i claim I had no interest in the topic? - clearly I do otherwise I wouldn't be reading it and posting on this thread?
What's the problem with my interest in this thread - you must know how a forum works - you express an opinion and then others are free to respond, just like you have done to my initial point about the woman clutching her Mulberry.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 13/11/2024 20:48

I think 9 times out of 10 you can spot a fake, generally IF you own the genuine article. I carry a vintage Chanel bag and go to B&M for household products😂, but I also own 2.55’s and Hermes bags amongst others. There are plenty of fakes, but never saw the point of them. Not sure what pleasure they bring to the owner, but they certainly fund misery. Would just carry a quality leather bag if I couldn’t afford designer.

Maria1979 · 13/11/2024 20:56

@Chan9eusername
It really bugs me, people think nothing of buying fakes but don't realise how much effort goes into designing and producing the real ones. Good quality ethically sourced leather,

What? ETHICALLY sourced leather !? I think you didn't make up that oxymoron on purpose but I almost spit out my tea on reading it.

Lastonightadjsavedmylife · 13/11/2024 21:12

This has surprised me, I’m assuming many responders are women and all seem to be eyeing up other folks bags and judging if they are real or not. I don’t notice and couldn’t give a shit

my bags aren’t designer but they are good quality, lk Bennett, Radley etc I like them they are good quality, I’d only look at a bag if I thought it was nice on someone else, and my thought would be no more than that’s nice.

i don’t really get all the judgment some women do on other women, how they dress, is their bag real etc. I mean who cares really.

Playingintheshadow · 13/11/2024 21:25

I wouldn't buy a fake bag - if I can't afford real, then I won't have it. Years ago I used to have Michael Kors bags but there's so many of them, a lot of them fake, I just don't carry them any more.

roastedrapidly · 13/11/2024 21:30

I dress plainly and drive a cheap car....but I have saved and invested in 3 x genuine Mulberry's. It has never occurred to me if anyone assumes they are fake or real...I wear them because I love them.

Does it bother you that people assume they are fakes - does it take away from the joy you feel when you use them? Curious because I must admit - it would ruin it a bit for me.
I have a theory - certain bit of clothing accessories up your game and certain aspects challenge it, and certain items make very little difference.

Up your game - good coat/jacket good shoes
Challenge your game - anything that almost always carries a label like bags and watches - more expensive can make you look worse
Very little difference - Jeans and t-shirt - you can buy these quite cheaply - good figure and posture, you can look amazing in Primark jeans and t-shirt - with good shoes and jacket of course!😅

Ethically sourced leather comes from animals not specifically bred and raised for their hides, vegetable tanned as opposed to chrome tanned, and sold on via tanneries that pay at least minimum wage. If you buy a pair of boots in New Look or a supermarket that say "leather" it is none of these things. It's the leather equivalent of MDF.

AnotherChildFreeCatLady · 13/11/2024 23:37

The resale value of designer bags can be quite low, you can grab a designer bag for a few hundred pretty easily off of vestiaire so many are prob real.

The sales assistant in LV said something similar to me. Dh was looking at a leather jacket whilst wearing Jack & Jones & I was in Sainsburys Tu!

He has no knowledge of brands at all but wears Gucci shoes because they are the comfiest he’s ever tried.

I have a Max Mara wool coat & Mulberry or Bottega handbag but am generally wearing M&S trousers & a Sainsburys t shirt underneath! I really regret not getting some shoes I saw whilst on holiday though. They wernt a known brand but they were Italian and absolutely gorgeous leather.
