If you don’t want to observe two minute silence- don’t be out

Mokel · 10/11/2024 08:46

Every Remembrance Sunday and Nov 11th, when I worked at retail, we did a tannoy announcement with 5 min, 2 min before to inform customers that the store will be observing the 2 min silence. Then another to start it.

Every time there were customers who kept talking. Plus one time a woman in her 50s shouted “why can’t anyone serve me some fucking fags?” Everyone just looked at her. Some had the courage to say how disrespectful she was once the silence ended.

If you are unable or refuse to observe the silence at 11am today or tomorrow, please don’t be in a public place.

If you hate the "British Armed Forces" so much, why do you live in the UK?

Well for some people it’s because their home was colonised by the British, wasn’t it?
(Does Northern Ireland ring any bells?)

Don’t forget the South too.
The entire island of Ireland was colonised by the British and there are many barracks still across the country as evidence of that.

ButterMints · 12/11/2024 19:21

Haha. Every year someone spectacularly fails to grasp that the soldiers commemorated on 11th November died to ensure that British people were able to remain free to make their own decisions about who to admire, who to celebrate, who to worship, who to ignore etc etc.

Every year.

I know, but people in ROI aren’t living in the UK anymore.

I personally don’t hate or even dislike the British Armed Forces. Your argument is ridiculous though. Those who are so deeply affected and need total silence from others for 2 minutes have various options including annual leave or asking your manager to step outside.

That said, I wonder how many retail workers actually feel strongly about everyone being quiet and observing the 2 minute silence. The people on here whinging about the general public going about their business whilst also doing general chores don’t count. I’m talking about people who work in places and serve the public.

I don't think the OP is in Ireland.

Dear sweet zombie jesus are you that ill informed? She's from Derry. The part of the UK where the British Army opened fire on its own citizens. Innocent people in the streets, not terrorists.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/11/2024 19:39

If someone feels that strongly about actions of the British Army, their values probably don’t align with that of the British culture

British Army has nothing whatsoever to do with British culture, you'd have to be extremely narrow of view to think that. British culture has so many other international cultures interwoven and is so much richer for that.

How about everybody lets everybody else think and do what they like when it comes to observing the 2 minute silence or not? Neither 'side' to disrupt the other. Let us shop, we'll let you stand there (but not in our way).

In which case she has a passport which entitles her to live anywhere in the EU if she hates the UK so much.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 12/11/2024 18:13

You're not being asked to love them. You're literally being asked not to disturb other people for TWO WHOLE MINUTES PER YEAR.

Lots of posts like this. I'm only skimming at this stage, but I don't think anyone has said they would disrupt anyone else's observance of the silence, just that they would quietly carry on with their own business. Which is surely fair enough in the supermarket. At a service, different story.

So you think the Irish should leave Northern Ireland?

You're really not making any kind of decent argument here. You seem completely ignorant of the decades of bloodshed from statements like this, not to mention the groundbreaking peace process that means our children are not growing up in conflict.

Genuinely horrified that someone could type these things.

What happened to "Lest we forget"?

I genuinely think it's odd to live in a country you hate when you have other options.

Thinking the same as the British always used to.
Chuck out, enslave or kill the locals and take what they want

Blimey and I thought we’d moved on.
It’s disgusting.

@BakedAlaska12

Here the the British values.

democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

Given your posts , doesn't look like your views align with British values either.

Do you not in understand how NI came to be, and the compromises of the peace process? Genuinely, do you not understand that? Because your posts are horrifically offensive and I'm not sure if you're goading or ignorant.

I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re not educated in the subject… but the previous posters post included enough information to make your response vile.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Yes, I do. But I think that if your hatred of the UK and its armed forces runs so deep that you feel the need to stage some sort of protest during the two minutes' silence and can't just be discreet for 120 whole seconds while other people are observing it, you may well be happier living somewhere else.

Inflammatory language now
Please find the post where I said it was ok to stage some sort of protest.
Id love to see that.

Your comments are a disgrace to all the nations across the world invaded, colonised and affected. They show no understanding of history whatsoever.
Your solution
To leave their own country if they don’t like it

Disgusting…..

Deliberately making a noise during the two minutes' silence because you disagree with it is staging a protest.

Time of post please.
I think you’ll clearly see I said I wouldn’t do that

but I can be corrected by you with your great memory of my own words

You made an accusation against me and now you can’t prove anything because you lied.
Lieing to prove a point just shows how worthless the comment was.
