If you don’t want to observe two minute silence- don’t be out

Every Remembrance Sunday and Nov 11th, when I worked at retail, we did a tannoy announcement with 5 min, 2 min before to inform customers that the store will be observing the 2 min silence. Then another to start it.

Every time there were customers who kept talking. Plus one time a woman in her 50s shouted “why can’t anyone serve me some fucking fags?” Everyone just looked at her. Some had the courage to say how disrespectful she was once the silence ended.

If you are unable or refuse to observe the silence at 11am today or tomorrow, please don’t be in a public place.

Also , if it's really that important, then people should go to services, ceremonies or stay at home to properly commemorate. Not in the middle of ASDA or Primark. Otherwise, it's not that deep really, is it?

Or hear me out when a supermarket says we are doing a 2 min silence you stay in dunno silent for bloody respect of everyone else. I know nowadays it's full of selfish folks it very much appears

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 10/11/2024 13:13

I also think 'fag lady' was merely a useful but fantasy prop. Nice touch though to give her age range.

Floofypuppy · 10/11/2024 13:15

If I’m out I do it because I feel the social pressure. It is meaningless though. That silence doesn’t equate to me actually doing anything. I think about the horrors of war on many different occasions but very rarely at 11/11/11

As I’m at home it’s bypassed me today

But surely if it's that important, you can wait to go shopping at 11:10 so you don't risk this vital moment being ruined by all the inconsiderate twats (or otherwise). We talk about sacrifices, the ultimate sacrifice in fact, but the only effort and thought are willing to put in doesn't go past stop and shut up?

How does that work?

TinyTeachr · 10/11/2024 13:17

Perhaps poorly worded, but I do object to your comment including those who are "not able" to remain silent.

We are regular church attendees. This morning was obviously the rememberabce service. My husband took out eldest to the monunent with the majority of th congregation for the two minutes silence. Those who are unable to walk can stay in church and do their two minute's silence there. I stayed with our 3 younger children. The priest leading the silence had already said to me not to worry if one of the children made noise. One did start to say something before I show her him and I did get a glare from someone (not someone who goes regularly I didn't know them).

It's not reasonable to expect small children or those with disabilities to be hidden away. That's very different from adults choosing to be disrespectful.

Tbf that was a rude and unacceptable interaction, regardless of time, place or items bought.

I’m not in Northern Ireland. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Nor are all Northern Irish people. That's the point, you have no idea on sight why anyone is choosing not to take part.

Littlemissgobby · 10/11/2024 13:09

I have seen commonwealth troops to on the sane March even American so that's why I said earlier there were Irish losses to

I’m fully aware there were Irish losses an entire brigade went over the top and they were all killed because no one thought to tell the Irish not to!

That’s not the point though, we were responding to comments on those alive who have experienced war in their own country where the British were the aggressors.
We can all remember our kinfolk who were killed but Remembrance Sunday is about remembering the British armed forces specifically

cookiebee · 10/11/2024 13:19

“Gentleman, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!”

Its quite funny that on a day for remembrance of the victims of war, here we all are bickering amongst ourselves, kind of a simplified version of how wars start!

HauntedBungalow · 10/11/2024 13:19

I preferred it in the 70s and 80s when we didn't do all this stuff, unless at a memorial ceremony. It only started happening because politicians wanted to get sun readers' votes.

Now we've got silences all over the place and barely five minutes goes by in any given day without some dingbat comparing eg the cost of living crisis/covid/house prices to "the war" or "the blitz" and "lest we forget"-ing at random folk. Chance would be a fine thing.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/11/2024 13:20

Donkeys years ago I was out with the three eldest kids and then DH shopping on a Sunday. Totally passed us by about the time and wandered into a supermarket chatting and acting as normal. Lots of filthy looks before the penny dropped, I was so embarrassed but it wasnt delberate.

We're supermarkets open on a Sunday then as I think that's part of it

We had a knobhead on a motorbike revving at the front of the queue of traffic as we were observing the 2 min silence at a cenotaph service. Unfortunately for him, the silence didn’t stop the police office next to me from noting down his reg. I suspect he’ll be getting a visit later.

🫤 good point

@StandingSideBySide or some might be from one of those small countries freely given away like toys , the winner picks the spoils , and had decades of tyranny, dictatorship and destruction to follow.

What, for engine noise?

People really do want to live in a police state, don't they?

Up until the point it's them at the sharp end.

eh? For what reason? This isn’t a bloody police state

A persons opinions about a minutes silence should not be inflicted onto others who it means nothing

I thought that was made pretty obvious during Covid. There were dozens of threads demanding the Army to be on the streets and reinforce the rules.

Threelittleduck · 10/11/2024 13:27

When I worked in retail customers would stop you observing the two minutes silence by asking me questions and expecting an answer right away. So yes they were stopping me.
It's sad people don't show respect for the soldiers who died for them.

Well said. And I reckon every serving soldier would agree with you.

Yes we should all do our best to be respectful and grateful for those who fought on our behalf, and are prepared to do so again if necessary, but not at the expense of taking away the very liberties they fought for in the first place!

BlueSilverCats · 10/11/2024 13:17

If it ever really happened...

These threads are always the same, full of righteousness and pompousness. Apologies to the poster concerned as I'm not referencing them other than generally but, as if drinking a tot at 11am means anything other than wanting a drink at 11am. It's no more respectful than not doing that.

Many people (myself included) think of lost lives at various points of our normal lives. I don't need an arbitrary remembrance for that, it's always there. If anybody needs to remember, it's our blasted government and world leaders who force wars, the financing of them, loss of lives and blank futures.

I have no issue with people wanting to participate in remembrance, that's their freedom right there. The performance leaves me cold and, as other posters have said, why are those people away from their homes at said time if it's so vitally important to them?

Times move on but what doesn't is the consistent war-mongering and pointless loss of lives. The people we elect/pay through the nose for have learned absolutely nothing. I deplore their posturing at 'Remembrance'.

Live and let live. We have been given the freedom to do that.

ByMerryKoala · 10/11/2024 13:29

The hyperbole is off the charts today.

'Hey, pipe down for two minutes so you don't disturb people observing a shared remembrance'.

Cue: Where's my freedom of movement? Why do people want to live in a police state?

Coconutter24 · 10/11/2024 13:30

SometimesCalmPerson · 10/11/2024 08:49

Unable? So you think anyone who makes involuntary noise or who cannot understand the concept of staying silent for remembrance should be forced to stay at home?

I’m sure that’s not the sort of freedom soldiers were supposed to be fighting for.

That’s no what OP has said and it’s very clear they mean people who are unable to keep their mouth shut not someone who is physically unable
