Please help my fellow mumsnetters!! My friend has lost her passport and is in an absolute panic. UK resident on what is supposed to be a relaxing well deserved holiday! Any advice???

This happened to a friend of mine. You need to contact GOV, police (if she thinks it’s been stolen) and they got him a single trip document to get him back to the UK.

Tell your friend to not panic.

RamblasTapas · 09/11/2024 12:36

Contact the British consulate and check her travel insurance to see if she will be covered for the cost of emergancy travel documents.

mindutopia · 09/11/2024 12:37

Go to the British embassy/consulate. She can apply for an emergency one or a new permanent one. When we had to do it (in India), it was very efficient, took 5 days for a full new passport, but I would think an emergency one is much faster. Look online for the application process and bring what you need with you (photos).

Speccytwit · 09/11/2024 12:38

Is she on a package holiday ? If yes contact the rep for that group.

Google for British Embassy closest to her to arrange for an emergency passport to get home.

I had my passport nicked back in the 80s and it was relatively simple ( despite being 18 and no internet)

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/11/2024 12:38

Whereabouts are you in Turkey?

ThianWinter · 09/11/2024 12:40

She needs to contact her tour rep if she has one, and ask hotel reception if it has been handed in.
Is it definitely lost? Could it have been stolen?

CoastalCalm · 09/11/2024 12:58

Did the hotel keep it ? Sometimes they do to take a copy etc

Ivyn · 09/11/2024 13:00

I had my bag including my passport snatched in Cambodia. The British Embassy and the foreign police sorted it all out for me.

GasPanic · 09/11/2024 13:01

Go to the consulate and take the photocopy/scan of your passport on your phone that you have with you.

It makes things much easier.

She can't do that, she's lost her passport.

The hope is that she’s scanned the title page to her phone.

Farmgoose · 09/11/2024 13:05

Police report first. Then UK Embassy. The passport will be cancelled so can’t be used if found (or used to get an imposter on to a flight).

That's exactly why you take the photocopy/scan before you lose it.

I have all those docs such as travel insurance, passport copy scanned/photoed, numbers to cancel credit cards etc scanned and in the safe folder on the phone ready for retrivial. Because they are backed up I could also retrieve from the Google account if the phone is lost.

It's what you do it and sure it's wise but most people don't and this person presumably hasn't or they'd be less panicked.

I'm not sure if you mean you have another backup, but the "safe folder" absolutely isn't saved on the cloud so you can't retrieve it through your Google account.

Yes, obviously it's what you do (and I've done it too) but how exactly is posting smugly about how organised and sensible you are of any help to someone who hasn't done those things?

All my pictures are backed up to Google photos and are absolutely available via the cloud. Not sure why you thi k they wouldn't be

How do you know she's got a scan of her passport? I haven't been to Turkey, is it a requirement? Maybe all countries should do that

MumblesParty · 09/11/2024 13:49

Is it lost as in “dropped from bag while out somewhere” or lost as in “not taken it out of the hotel room but now can’t find it”?

Chan9eusername · 09/11/2024 13:51

British consular services!

Because you said "scanned and in the safe folder on the phone ready for retrivial. Because they are backed up I could also retrieve from the Google account if the phone is lost."

That could be read as you thinking they were backed up in the safe folder, which cannot be done through your Google account. I was making sure you knew that to avoid a future disaster, that's all.

@DreamW3aver Regardless of whether it's a requirement or not, it's a sensible thing to do.
I always have a printed photocopy of my passport in a separate place to the original plus a copy on my phone. Ditto my travel insurance documents. I also leave copies at home for my DS. He can't claim for repatriation if he doesn't know my insurance details!
When travelling with friends, we have copies of each other's passports on our phones too.
It's just common sense.

Going to sound nuts here but it's worked! If you ever loose somthing ask ST ANTONY. He's the patriarchal Saint of lost things and it works everytime....my friend is having passport returned in 2 days. Thank you so much fellow mumsnetters for all advice. I appreciate you all😁

I would get her to renew it as soon as she gets back. Who knows who has made copies and selling her identity if it was "missing" for 2 days.
