Intended to be light hearted! Some are obvious like politics - what other things secretly make you roll your eyes when they're bought up at say, a dinner party? I hate hearing detailed descriptions of people's holidays lol. I like to hear if somewhere is nice but not a whole two week itinerary! I think my friends husband wants to tell me shut up already when I talk about pilates lol, what are yours?

Oh god. This is the thread that I’ll read when I know I shouldn’t and then overthink every damn thing I say in conversation. Then I’ll lie in bed in 2075 and think about the conversation I had in 2024 and whether the other person was judging my choice of topic.

People who talk about reminiscing about events that haven't happened

(Sorry, couldn't resist :) )

For me, it's not the topic but the detail. My partner frames EVERYTHING in STAR (the interview technique). Basically, the history of the event, then the plan, what actually happened, then the review after.

The cat made a face, that's all I need.

I had a friend and you had to be very careful what you asked her because she would go into every detail.
For example let’s say she was a librarian.
‘How was your day?’ Would go something like……
Well Mr Barnes came in at 9, I know it was 9 because Sue had just asked if we all wanted a cuppa and she always puts the kettle on at 9, unless miserable Dave is there because he doesn’t like us having drinks before our official break. Yes definitely 9am because Linda brought in some of those lovely chocolate biscuits from M & S and she always goes to M & S on the way into work. Anyway Mr Barnes told me the council are going to start charging to pay to park in the car park I use. Well that put a dampener on my day. Then Mrs Jones came in, you know Mrs Jones, her daughter married Sean, Sean who got run over crossing the road about 10 years ago………’

People retelling a joke they heard a comedian tell. Especially the long anecdotal ones.

That comedian has spent hours honing a script and practicing their comic timing to ensure that it's funny. You, Alan, have not.

Stop it.

Sounds like my sister.
I asked one day about the landlords response to the damp in her home.
90 minutes later I still had no idea what was being done about the damp, but I did know all about the landlords son, his girlfriend who just so happened to go on holiday at the same resort as them, and how their son had cerebral palsy.
I don't talk to her often and when I do I soon regret it.

I’m quite happy with any controversial topic - politics, trans, abortion, happy to get stuck in if they come up - although would generally avoid bringing these topics up myself. Although sadly many people are incapable of actual debate and just repeat their views on loop.

It’s the really boring stuff I can’t bear, and going on about people I don’t know. Like giving me details of their neighbour’s niece’s operation and how Bill down the road has a new car.

Oh and work, I don’t mind hearing about someone’s job in broad terms, but not especially keen on knowing what happened in your Wednesday meeting or how middle manager D has fallen out with new recruit E.

Sleb gossip also leaves me cold

there’s a common thread here, I am not interested in hearing about the lives of people I don’t know

This is exactly what my colleague does and i just stop listening.
