When did you take your newborn out

I have a 3 week old baby and I am breastfeeding. I have only taken her to see GP or get vaccine at hospital. She caught cold last week from her brother which kept me worried. I don't feel comfortable yet about breastfeeding outside. I haven't managed to take her out to other places yet like restaurant or coffee shop. Since it's flu season and baby doesn't gets first vaccine until 8 weeks, I feel bit anxious about taking her to supermarket etc. At what age did you start taking your baby out and any tips are appreciated.

Five weeks with the first as it was horrible winter weather and I struggled to establish bf and maybe the day after with the second as I was more in the swing of things and it was summer and she fed easily - all to say, it’s okay to do what works for you, there isn’t a right answer xx if you’re worried about bf in public, maybe go to a local peer group for a coffee initially, it’s a good way to practise in comfortable setting!

It's about when you're physically ready too. I took my first to Next (why?!) on day 3 and had to lie on the beds! So daft. I really wanted to be out in the world but I was very dizzy in that shop. Took my second to a political rally (very safe) on day 2 and was absolutely fine - much easier birth.

Sii · 08/11/2024 20:08

The day we got home from hospital so 3 days old. I couldn't think of anything worse than staying in the house for 3 weeks. Even if you dont want to be around people go for a walk and get some fresh air (thats what we did)

MadKittenWoman · 08/11/2024 20:08

Day 4 to an NCT baby group around the corner.

pimplebum · 08/11/2024 20:09

Day 1 and every day but that was just me I wanted to go out

you do want suits you , happy mum happy baby
sounds like you are a bit anxious if you can Brest feed at home you can do it in a cafe / park bench
as fir colds , just follow medical advice but it is just a cold

Printedword · 08/11/2024 20:11

My baby was prem, we left hospital after a month. After getting home I tried the get out and about from around 10 days after we got home. My very badly indurated wound/scar was the main barrier to getting out.

Moonlightstars · 08/11/2024 20:11

By 3 weeks DD had been to 2 weddings and a funeral!

With the others about 4 days but only for a coffee/walk. I would have gone a bit stir crazy otherwise.

ReignOfError · 08/11/2024 20:15

Day 11 (the day after they let us out of hospital) and every day thereafter. Normally for a decent walk, for my sanity, but also to friends, family and the odd mother and baby thing. It was a long time ago, and you were expected to take your babies to the local clinic to be weighed once a week, which was a great chance to meet other mums and kids and catch all the germs! First flights at 6 weeks as they have overseas grandparents.

ChiliFiend · 08/11/2024 20:17

I tried not to take any of mine anywhere indoors and crowded for as long as I could (so - anywhere outdoors or just visiting with a few people was ok, but I tried not to get on crowded buses during rush hour etc.) Of course it doesn't matter in the big scheme of things if your newborn gets a cold, but it's pretty miserable while they have it - and some viral illnesses can be dangerous for newborns.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/11/2024 20:19

I don't remember,

but having 2 large dogs that got 2 good walks every day, I guess it was pretty soon.
as i can't remember how much paternity leave dh had/took.

I do know we took her with us in her carry cot to our favourite restaurant when she was 10 days old
( we did phone and ask if it would be ok, and she was bottle fed. she slept through the whole meal )

I get dreadful cabin fever so within days. My 3rd was born at 1am, I was in Asda by midday lol.

If you feel up to it, give her a feed then get out for a walk. Chances are she’ll sleep a while in the pram and it’s good for both of you to get out and about.

Fleurdalys · 08/11/2024 20:21

Gave birth at 8pm
Was on the school run with eldest and newborn in pram at 8am
Was lovely to see big brother so proud of his new bro
I loved it

Laura36TTC · 08/11/2024 20:23

A couple of hours after we got home we went out a walk.
We were out every day after that, walks, coffee shops, out for lunch. All just out for an hour or two.

However my little girl is a summer baby xx

Littlebitpsycho · 08/11/2024 20:23

My DD was about 20 hours old when we went to the yard to sort out my 3 horses, luckily everyone was desperate for cuddles so it was easy.

I'd have gone bonkers staying indoors any longer, although I did have an easy birth - just a tear warranting the use of maternity pads the size of small mattresses 🤦‍♀️🤣

RedBulb · 08/11/2024 20:23

10 days, I was a bit of a state after episiotomy and forceps and couldn’t walk far, dragged myself to hospital appointments from day 2, but not out with baby until day 10. Just go when you are ready, someone else posted about not letting fear hold you back, I completely agree!

IsitanIssue · 08/11/2024 20:24

Three mile walk with her the next day. First and third definitely visited the pub within the first few days/week. Same as others have said that when they have school aged siblings you can’t avoid outside germs. That said, I kept them close and when you’re breastfeeding you create antibodies for the things things you’re both exposed to. Third is now 8 months and only had one two day case of sniffles since she’s been born (despite 4 holidays away!).

Incognitoburrito88 · 08/11/2024 20:24

Baby one - dog walk on day 3 John Lewis cafe day 7
baby two - music festival day 5 (my family run the event)
baby three - school sports day day 4
baby four - cafe day 3

I was a bit nervous first time I breastfed in public. I got my husband to sit in front of me while she latched on. You get good at it very quickly. Maybe try feeding in front of a mirror so you can see how little anyone else can see.

your baby is getting passive immunity from your milk so it really doesn’t matter that they haven’t had their jabs yet. Supermarket in a sling is definitely safe and at least would be a change of scene for you.

As soon as I was home. With my second (I remember it better then my first as it was a bit of a nuts week):

Monday: born (section)
Wednesday: home. Had best friend round within an hour (impromptu but fine)
Thursday: out for lunch and shopping
Friday: went to visit friends an hour away and out for a fancy afternoon tea
Saturday: hosted friends at home for a bbq
Sunday: church followed by a pub lunch

Similar with my first, but more popping out to cafes than day trips in the first couple of weeks.

I felt great and wanted to be out and about, so I did.

cadburyegg · 08/11/2024 20:31

Ds1 a few days. Maybe a week. Just walks round the block at first but I remember taking him to a coffee shop after about 2-3 weeks.

Ds2 about 3 days. Took ds1 to the park!

rayofsunshine86 · 08/11/2024 20:33

Our first was after 7 days, but we were in hospital for the first five days. EBF but quite a faff latching and all the rest of it.

Second baby was day 3 to the coffee shop and a summer fête.

Third baby was day 2 for a trip to the coffee shop. He went to the pub for the first time aged 6 days 😆

All EBF'd. Babies 2 & 3 had a much easier time feeding.

Hope you get out and are comfortable soon :)

StarSlinger · 08/11/2024 20:34

As soon as I could walk and sit down without wincing.

JudyJulie · 08/11/2024 20:34

Born on Sunday, out of hospital Tuesday to DGPs for cuddles and then to ASDA. Register Office Wednesday, school run Thursday. She seems to have survived.

Nine9 · 08/11/2024 20:34

Just over a week, I think, as I was feeling better and wanted to get out. We went to the supermarket and a staff member stroked his hand while saying how cute he was. I did internally panic afterwards (he was my first), until I realised nothing bad was going to happen and you can't keep them in a bubble. 5 years later he is fine and I was much less anxious after that, and with my second!
