When did you take your newborn out

I have a 3 week old baby and I am breastfeeding. I have only taken her to see GP or get vaccine at hospital. She caught cold last week from her brother which kept me worried. I don't feel comfortable yet about breastfeeding outside. I haven't managed to take her out to other places yet like restaurant or coffee shop. Since it's flu season and baby doesn't gets first vaccine until 8 weeks, I feel bit anxious about taking her to supermarket etc. At what age did you start taking your baby out and any tips are appreciated.

First child - we went to the supermarket on the way home from hospital

Second child - in hospital for around 7 days then home for another 3 ish days. This was more for my wellbeing than the baby though.

horseymum · 08/11/2024 19:22

Church on about day 3 or four with all of them but just do what you are comfortable with. Maybe just try a short walk outside each day if you don't feel comfortable going into places.

ladygindiva · 08/11/2024 19:23

DC 2 and 3 ( twins ) was also day 4 or 5, I was in hospital two days but it pissed down with rain for days when we got home , winter babies, UK. Took them out first dry day. Was told fresh air and sunlight very good for them.

Marblesbackagain · 08/11/2024 19:23

There is absolutely no norm. Do what feels right for you.

My first was the first day home from hospital so he was three days out. Went for a walk in local park and coffee shop.

Second one was on school run on day two. I needed to walk due to a back issue. And I really do a hell of a lot walking.

Floralnomad · 08/11/2024 19:25

First one was born on Friday evening , we got out of hospital Monday and we were out and about on Tuesday . The second was about a week as I’d had an ELCS

strangerontheinternet · 08/11/2024 19:30

1st born - home at 24h old and was out by about day 3 I think. Definitely out for breakfast day 5.
2nd - home at 12h old at the park the next morning about 33h old.

MumChp · 08/11/2024 19:31

From day 1.

Teawaster · 08/11/2024 19:37

We took our twin Ds babies out the day they arrived home from hospital, 4 days after they were born, for a walk along the seafront. As they were premature but not in SCBU we were advised not to bring them into supermarkets and similar places for 6 weeks, but there was no restriction on taking them outside.

sophi1995 · 08/11/2024 19:37

Right away with my first, we went for a pub lunch on the way home from the hospital. I was dying for something other than hospital food. We went for loads of meals out with the baby in the early days - I miss those days when it was still so easy to go out and talk while baby slept happily in the pram beside us!

With my second I can't remember but we went out less in the early days, not out of fear that anything bad would happen but just general difficulties in getting out of my own with 2 very small children.

Dd was born on a Thursday morning, I took her to church on the Sunday!

Me too! Passed round all the old ladies, cooed over, handed her straight to my vicar friend and she took her for a tour round the church.

We came home the day after the birth, 30th December, put him in the pram and walked him down into the village and back along the seafront. He slept through it but we have always done the fresh air thing- daily walks with all 3 DC.

StiggyZardust · 08/11/2024 19:44

DS was born on a Thursday, we were in the pub for lunch on the Sunday.

TheWittyBird · 08/11/2024 19:47

The breastfeeding bit ! My daughter is breastfeeding just now baby is 17 weeks old but she expresses her milk and lets everyone else feed him from his bottle it lets her either go to sleep or work . She also took him from Scotland to Ibiza for a week at 3 months old

RubyWinehouse · 08/11/2024 19:47

Baby was born on the Tuesday, I went home from hospital on the Thursday, and on the Sunday, I took baby to Tesco's.

JawsCushion · 08/11/2024 19:53

Unless you had your baby at home, you've already taken her out.

Baby number 2 came to ToysRUs with me at about three days.

Klippityklopp · 08/11/2024 19:57

First - about a week, that was due to them being born in Jan and we had about a foot of snow, wouldn't have managed to walk with the pram.
Second- when they were two days old

fridaynight1 · 08/11/2024 19:57

Day 1. We went to Tesco for nappies on the way home from hospital.
And then went to see my mum and dad to show her off 😁

usernother · 08/11/2024 19:57

Within a couple of days. I needed to get shopping. Home delivery hadn't been invented.

Just had 3rd baby at home.
Firstborn was a hospital birth, last 2 Homebirth.

Was very strict this time - week in the bed, week on the bed, week in the house.

I would have loved to have done "the first 40 days" but just wasn't practical with 2 other children.

As a doula, I encourage all my client to do this, how we recover during postpartum influences the rest of our life.

My bond with my last baby is so much stronger for staying in that oxytocin bubble for as long as possibles

I honestly would have gone insane doing this.

We went for a walk on day 4 after a c section and have been out walking every day since (2 weeks in) via coffee shops. We’ve also had visitors near-daily.

claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer · 08/11/2024 20:01

First -about 4 days? We went to maccies lol
Second was in NICU so didn’t even come home until 10 days old, think he would have come to the park at about 2 weeks ish as it was the summer holidays

Chipsahoy · 08/11/2024 20:01

It’s hard isn’t it? Baby number one we didn’t leave much except for medical appointments. It was February and cold but mostly I had a birth injury.
baby number two came with me to preschool about a week after he was born.

Baby three was a summer baby so we spent a lot of time in the garden, he napped in his pram. We started walks after about a week but I stayed away from the school run for 4 weeks because chicken pox was going around!

You are allowed to stay home and rest. But do try and get some fresh air with the pram. Or perhaps try a breastfeeding group. Very supportive and gets you out and about.

Eviolle · 08/11/2024 20:02

Day 4 with baby 1 and day 3 with baby 2. Baby 2 was born in January, just wrapped her up nice and snug and we went to the park with the big kid. No difficulties at all. And she's never had a cold.

I agree, I’m not a super active person but not leaving the house for 3 weeks would be a recipe for depression for me honestly.

orchid81 · 08/11/2024 20:04

Dc1 at 3 days old, dc2 the following morning for the school run, he was less than 24 hours old, but dc1 had school.

Orla32 · 08/11/2024 20:05

We had a nice pub lunch on day 2 by the river!
