To think this dinner is acceptable?

My toddler who is 2.5 had a cod fish finger sandwich for tea and 2 more fish finger on the side, he finished the whole thing and I gave him some Jaffa cakes and a banana sucky yogurt thing, that he's eating just now, DH is just home from work and asked what ds had for tea, I told him what he had and he seems to think it's not enough for a growing 2.5 year old.

He can be very fussy and I'm thinking it's a win that he ate that much at all but I'm being made feel horrible by DH. Please let me know if you think this is enough for a toddlers tea?

OP posts:
Allswellthatendswelll · 08/11/2024 17:26

I'd have chucked some peas or cucumber sticks on the side but mainly to assuage my parental guilt. I would be pleased if DS ate that much tbh.

I can't imagine DH coming home from work and criticising what I'd fed our child. I'd be unimpressed!

mongoliandoll · 08/11/2024 17:27

Your child will let you know if they are hungry - it's how we have survived!

I wish my 15 yo would be happy with a fish finger sandwich for his evening meal!

YellowAsteroid · 08/11/2024 17:27

High in fat, sugar, salt and generally over processed food.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 08/11/2024 17:27

Sounds more than enough processed food (apart from banana) for a small child. He's fussy because he's fed rubbish.

Megifer · 08/11/2024 17:28

Im dead serious. And instead of carb heavy bread slice an aubergine wafer thin to use as a wrap instead.

Just the one fish finger mind, that's enough processed food for one meal.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 08/11/2024 17:28

Megifer · 08/11/2024 17:20

Couldn't you have made your own cod wraps and used finely milled carrot for breadcrumbs instead?

Yummy yum yum.

OP, fish goes well with quinoa, there's a lovely delicate balance to it. I'd also steam some asparagus spears.
Oh wait, it isn't in season right now. Drat. Plump for kale.

Cheshireicecreaminacone · 08/11/2024 17:29

it's enough but a lot very processed food...

Annabella92 · 08/11/2024 17:30

Am I going mad?

I'm convinced I've seen this exact post posted before last year?!

Tell me I'm not mad. Anyone else seen this before?

TwattyMcFuckFace · 08/11/2024 17:32

Bit weird that you didn't say how many fish fingers and how many slices of bread.

Anyway a two and a half year old is perfectly capable of saying if they're still hungry.

MissHalloween · 08/11/2024 17:32

Sounds fine for an every now and again meal.

No shit sherlock, I'm sure OP could have worked that out herself.

You would be surprised (not saying this about OP per se) but given the state of the health of the general population, there are a lot of people who are not aware.
Billions are spent on advertising trying to make out certain foods are healthy if they contain fruit/fruit juices, are fortified with vitamins etc - mainly because people fall for it.

The meal is highly processed but impossible to judge (which is what OP is asking us to do, rather than us being judgmental) without context.
Tonight, I am going to have pizza and wine and I can’t wait.

Grammarnut · 08/11/2024 17:33

Sounds fine, though a real banana might be nicer than the banana yoghurt thing. DS at that age, lucky if he ate a bit of cottage cheese and a bag of crisps. DH is being OTT.

Don't think it was a banana, it was a banana flavoured sucky yogurt thing. Probably not really any banana in it

Klozza · 08/11/2024 17:35

Honestly if he’s fussy I think this is absolutely fine, assuming this isn’t an every night thing and he’s offered fruit/veg/other meals in the week. My little one went through a REALLY bad stage with food between 2 to 3 years old, so bad we had to go to be referred to a dietician (he’s much better now) and some times all I could get him to eat was a couple of slices of toast, so I counted this as a win at the time 😭

Startingagainandagain · 08/11/2024 17:36

Too much junk food and no fruits/vegs. Not great.

Devilsmommy · 08/11/2024 17:37

LolaJ87 · 08/11/2024 17:14

I would love if my son ate that to be honest as he rejects all fish and meat and many other things... but this is mumsnet where nobody has ever had a picky toddler so prepare for some proper critique.

I was thinking exactly the same. My just turned 2 year old is a picky fecker and I'd be ecstatic if he ate a fish finger sandwich 😅 mine refuses all meat except Greggs sausage rolls 🤭

Whatsitreallylike · 08/11/2024 17:37

Are we talking about the birdseye ultra processed type fish fingers, in ultra processed supermarket bread, buttered with ultra processed spread. Followed by ultra processed sugar loaded Jaffa cakes and an ultra processed sugar loaded yoghurt? With no accompanying fruit or vegetable?

Nothing unreasonable there.

ATastingMenuButItsAllCrisps · 08/11/2024 17:37

@ByQuaintAzureWasp there was no banana

lasagnelle · 08/11/2024 17:38
  1. Where's the fruit/veg?
  2. He can stfu unless he's going to make dinner

Not always true, my little one at 3 years old went through a phase of eating almost nothing, he was beyond fussy to the point he’d not eat for over a day and we were referred to a dietician as he was losing weight. It turned out to be a control thing because it was the only thing he felt he could control in his little life as me and his dad were going through a seperation and the change was upsetting more than it seemed like it was to us. Obviously a lot of cases aren’t like this but not all small children are fussy just because they’re ‘fed rubbish’. Could be other factors.

Grammarnut · 08/11/2024 17:39

Megifer · 08/11/2024 17:20

That sounds horrible. Cod with carrot crumbs. Yeuch. Doubt any child I know would eat it. You are presumably joking or do not have any children.

MaggieBsBoat · 08/11/2024 17:40

Fish finger äs are the business!
He‘ll let you know if he’s hungry. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

She didn't say he was fussy. Anyway, what's wrong with fish fingers? It was banana yoghurt, so that's okay. Daresay bread was brownish. Jaffa cake = treat. It's fine.

heathspeedwell · 08/11/2024 17:41

I genuinely don't understand how people can't see that Megifer is joking.
