Will an air fryer change my life?

Pondering whether I should buy an air fryer, will I use it or will it take up space on the counter?

You think it would actually say what the 9 functions are.

Its says air frying, baking, rotiserrie, roasting (same thing as baking surely?) and more. Not sure what the more is

Auburngal · 09/11/2024 12:07

I make enough for two meals. One I eat on the day and the other one I put in a tuppaware type box and put in the fridge. I treat it like a ready meal and eat the other half within a week. Last week I made a mixed bean and veg chilli. Had the first half with rice. The other half I added half a pack of passata and 200ml of veg stock and made a thick and filling soup with it.

Perfect analogy

You can't do that in a standalone AF. You need a multicooker. I have a Ninja Speedi which you brown off onion, mince on the the sear/saute function.

With mine you could cook a cottage pie in it. Sear/saute a mince mix, top with mash potato and a bit of cheese if you wish. Close lid, put onto bake/roast for 15 mins.

Before biuying our little oven (which does have other functions) I spent a long time watching air fryer videos on youtube and people very much do all that in the trays, fry off the onions, fry off the mince and any other veg, mix in tomatoes, cook that down, then cook pasta in water in a tray. I wouldnt do it myself but its interesting what people managed to do

HildaHosmede · 09/11/2024 12:11

I've loved having one. Find it far easier than the oven in many cases.

You can't really do a 'whole meal' in it (for 5) but its great for a good portion of it.

We had Meatballs, tomato pasta and mushrooms/courgettes last night. Meatballs in one drawer, mushrooms and courgettes in the other, timer used so they were finished at the same time. Just a basic tomato pasta to make on the hob, it didn't even really feel like cooking. Far easier than if the Meatballs and veg had to go in the oven on trays at different temperatures/different times and whatnot.

Because kettles, toasters, microwaves, blenders etc are so beautiful in comparison....

They're a lot smaller, shiny and come in pretty colours or shapes, art deco etc etc

Its what has put me off for ages as I find them really ugly. Great hulking thing. The only way Ive tolerated what we have is that it sits on the hob.

Auburngal · 09/11/2024 12:20

Only thing I use the oven for is for pizzas

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 09/11/2024 12:23

I have a multi functional one that does slow cooking, pressure cooking, baking and some other things as well - use it every day, hardly ever use the oven now.

SquashPenguin · 09/11/2024 12:25

We have two. One ninja 6 in 1 Speedi and a Tefal two drawer. Saves a fortune compared to using the oven every day.

Katemax82 · 09/11/2024 12:27

I personally use my ninja speedi more than my air fryer as it does that plus steam and slow cook, however I also have a ninja air fryer with the 2 drawers and it's also great

I think that’s another reason why we don’t have one. We don’t use the oven every day. Any savings would be minimal.

Ninjas are fairly invincible. They regularly win 'Which Best Buys'
Get the biggest one you can afford. Like many have said. I have 2 Bosch ovens that are rarely used. Day to day for the kids, Simple small things are cooked easily. Even managed a small chicken in mine.

OptimisticMermaid · 09/11/2024 12:45

It doesn’t change your life but it does make it easier. There’s just me and I have a ninja speedi and a ninja dual drawer. I don’t use the hob or oven for anything. Speedi meals are so easy and it takes all the stress out of making dinner.

Latest discovery - I put spaghetti, water, tomato purée, herbs in the bottom. Chopped up onions mushrooms bacon peppers on crisper tray. Set it to speedi meals for 10 mins. Mixed it all together in the bottom. Set to steam for 10 mins. Best spaghetti bolognaise ever.

you can't possibly make a decent spag blog like that and certainly not in 10 mins!

Moremustard · 09/11/2024 13:19

GreenSmithing · 09/11/2024 07:42

How are people using it to cook things like bolognaise? Obviously you take the removable tray out, but do you brown onions in there, then add meat - or put it all in together? I can't see how it would work...

I've always cooked Bolognese on the hob...I wouldn't use my air fryer. I do have an electric pressure cooker that has a saute function though which is brilliant for stews soups and wet stuff like Bolognese! Air fryer is an oven essentially, I think people do cook stuff like that in an air fryer though. Mine is for potato dishes, like cottage pie in a dish, sausages bacon pastry chips crisping microwaved baked potatoes etc

I always sauted onions etc using sear function in ninja speedi. Just discovered recently that you can do the onions mushrooms etc by putting them on the crisper tray and using speedi meals.

TheChosenTwo · 09/11/2024 13:40

Dh bought one on a whim a couple of months ago. Used it once and then it sat in the utility room and has now been passed on 😂
As far as I could tell it was just for heating convenience food up for one or two people quickly or for people who don’t cook properly (sorry!!!), we just didn’t see how it would be any use for our family of 5, often 6,
He was stupid to buy it but is always quick to waste money!

See above. It was 20 mins total. 10 mins crisps up the onions bacon etc. on speedi meals setting whilst also cooking the spaghetti. then steam the lot for 10 mins. I really enjoyed it and minimum hassle. Everyone is different though.

It's just a small oven but it's so bloody useful. It's smaller so quicker and uses less energy.

I roast a big pile of veg with a very tiny amount of oil in a paper tray insert, just tossing occasionally. I find a big pile gets less burnt and is then also slightly steamed. Much quicker than an oven. Have done tofu in it too, no oil.

A latest recipe is eggs in avocados with a little bit of smoked salmon - scoop out the stone and a little more avocado, put a sliver of salmon in and the egg on top. Bake for about 10 mins or to how you want your eggs

I now do all meat in ours - salmon, chicken and even a roast beef. Ninja duo (two drawers are really handy) but also has the meat thermometer which I thought would be useless but makes the best roasts ever.

If doing chicken thighs, turn skin down for half of it.

Refresh baguettes and similar loaves in a few mins.

Generally use the paper trays for most things now just for ease.

WarriorN · 09/11/2024 13:58

I'm also going to look at an omelette at some point as egg poured into a paper tray once and cooked really nicely, without sticking. (It's basically baking parchment)

You can get silicone inserts too

Whattheduck · 09/11/2024 14:04

Mine was only used when Dd was home as she did quite a few things in it so when she went to university I gave it to her she uses it most days I don’t miss it.I tend to use my slow cooker more than my oven.
My mum on the other hand also uses hers most days and cooks all sorts in it and rarely uses her oven

We've got one, they're ok but absolutely not life changing.

I wouldn't buy a Ninja personally - I ordered one directly from them and when it arrived it was scratched inside and smelt of chips. It was clearly a return and the more I thought about it, they must have been selling returned items as new, otherwise how on earth could a used unit end up mixed in with new stock.

I've got an Instant Pot versazone now. It's better than having 2 fixed smaller drawers as you can use it with it without a divider, so can fit larger items in. Each side can still operate independently if you want to divide it in half.

I'm ambivalent about ours. It's great for baking, pizza, oven chips, baking potatoes/sweet potatoes. For roasting veg I prefer the oven - I like to use a really large flat tray and spread the veg out, you can't do as much in the air fryer, even using the whole big drawer. We don't eat meat, so no need to cook a chicken, chops, sausages etc. Chips and pizza only once in a while and only have roast potatoes on Christmas day, so not much use there either!

In terms of cleaning, our is really easy - take out the drawer, half fill with hot water and washing up liquid, soak for a few minutes and then any mess just slides off. Quick brush and rinse, it's done

Overall, I would say it's quite useful, but not at all essential.

How do you cook a whole pizza in one?

How do you fit a baguette in? Do you have to chop it up into small pieces?
Why gold skin down on chicken please?

No. Everyone on my house eats more ultra processed beige food because we have an air fryer,

Thin, healthy people don't use them.

You can do everything in them you do in an oven
I eat healthy.
Educate yourself.

I agree. Such a silly comment.
