Rice pudding for breakfast

Feels indulgent but is it nutritionally similar to porridge or am I deluding myself? Homemade in a crock pot with pudding rice, semi skimmed milk, mixed dried fruit, sugar and spices.

Usually I prefer a savoury start to the day but this feels like it will keep the cold out.

Another rice pudding or apple crumble (and custard!) for breakfast person here too. Apple crumble is very sustaining especially with oats in the crumble mix.
Nothing wrong with rice pudding either but if you want the fibre you could eat a couple of oatcakes as elevenses. To add to my general oddities I have also made semolina for breakfast. Also, leftover stir fries are a great start to the day.
Enjoy your rice pudding 😊

Thanks all. It's odd how sweet rice feels indulgent compared to porridge oats when there's probably not much difference between them.

This would be a perfectly normal thing in some countries. I grew up in continental Europe and it's quite a normal thing to have a variety of porridges throughout the week. So you can have rice porridge one day, semolina porridge the next. Buckwheat and barley porridge are more of a savory lunch dishes but can also be eaten for breakfast. Oat porridge is my least favourite by far.

Rice pudding for breakfast is lovely! I want to make some now.

I had a crisp sandwich and a French fancy for breakfast, but I'm going through a phase of being very bored and uninspired with food.

I think you should probably meet for breakfast with the poster of another thread who’s eating Yorkshire puddings and jam for breakfast. 😉

We were served this for breakfast in a B&B in New England, only our host called the Yorkshire puddings “popovers”. They were nice with jam.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/11/2024 15:17

Why have I never thought of rice pudding for breakfast?!

gabsdot · 08/11/2024 15:26

I stayed in a hotel in Eastern Europe for 3 weeks once and alternated between Semolina and rice pudding for breakfast.
I still think of it.

You can't go wrong with eggs for breakfast.
Mini eggs, obviously 😄

takealettermsjones · 08/11/2024 15:40

This is really common in Nordic countries (e.g. grjónagrautur).

If it means you would be eating it every day and massively increasing your rice consumption though, just be mindful of the arsenic - use lots of water when cooking, don't give a lot of it to under 5s, etc.

There's going to be a run on pudding rice, I want rice pudding now!

I like it really nutmeg-y, delicious.

xboxforlife · 08/11/2024 17:03

now I want a mullerice !!! 😭😭

haje · 08/11/2024 17:04

I had. Horrid bug in the summer. I woke up one day feeling a little better and that's all I wanted. Ate it for breakfast all summer!

Ginkypig · 08/11/2024 17:24

In some parts of Europe it’s a standard breakfast item.

anotherusernameforthis · 08/11/2024 17:36

If you can get steel cut oats, they are similar in texture to rice; chewy and textured, not soft like regular oats. Also called pinhead oats. They are also full of fibre and totally unprocessed so you get all the germ/husk goodness. Take a long time to cook, perfect for overnight in the crockpot. I usually do a ratio of 1:4, pinhead oats to water.

Beat in an egg or two to get it super creamy and add protein. Nuts on top, perfect!

I'm sure that the OP is well aware that she can eat whatever she likes for breakfast.

But, she's asking if it's a good idea nutritionally.

In Italy, they eat Torta di Riso for breakfast, which is basically rice pudding in cake form.

I love hot rice pudding in the cold winter mornings for breakfast

The lovely smell in the kitchen when you come down if you cook the rice puddingin slow cooker overnight. So delicious.

Though I love left over curry too - breakfast of champions!!!
