Rice pudding for breakfast

Feels indulgent but is it nutritionally similar to porridge or am I deluding myself? Homemade in a crock pot with pudding rice, semi skimmed milk, mixed dried fruit, sugar and spices.

Usually I prefer a savoury start to the day but this feels like it will keep the cold out.

But back to the topic - my DD eats rice pudding for breakfast as it's pretty much the only thing she will eat before school. It feels a bit weird, but its constituent parts are all fine! Rice, milk, bit of sugar - basically a cooked bowl of cereal!

When I worked in Malaysia, rice pudding was on offer at all the hotel breakfast buffets I stayed at, so I assume is common over there.

My favourite was when it was made with coconut milk. Add a few slices of mango and it's a breakfast of champions!

I ate orange smarties for breakfast. Necked them straight from the tube. At least you made an effort OP.

Yeah, at least put your Smarties on a plate, @LostTheMarble! Standards! Next thing you’ll be saying is that you don’t always drink tea from a cup and saucer…

It’s a family sized tube, so a bowl would have been more appropriate to be honest. At least a potion size in hand. But then the youngest would have seen and wanted to share, that’s simply unacceptable 😉

Rice pudding is pretty similar to rice porridge which is a breakfast food (especially Christmas breakfast but my son usually gets it for breakfast at school on Fridays too) in my country, with sugar and cinnamon.

Congee or rice porridge is eaten in India for breakfast. But it’s savoury and often has meat / veg added to it. Alternatively you could make khichdi which is a rice and lentil porridge with added veg. I think sweet rice porridge everyday is probably a bit indulgent.

Cocolapew · 08/11/2024 09:49

It was my birthday yesterday so I'm eating chocolate cake 😀

Garlicpest · 08/11/2024 09:49

maybe try leaving out the sugar next time if you are using dried fruit. and swap out white with whole grain rice

... but that's ... not rice pudding, @bloodredfeaturewall.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 08/11/2024 09:50

When I was in Greece last year there were little pots of rice pudding sprinkled with cinnamon at the breakfast buffet. Rice pudding is one of my favourite things so I had it every morning.

Singleandproud · 08/11/2024 09:52

'Breakfast' foods only became common once clever companies started marketing their foods as such Kellogs etc until then every one but the aristocracy probably would have eaten what they had left over whatever that was.

DD went through a phase of having soup and bread for breakfast which was probably a bit saltier than ideal but no actual difference to having it at lunch time.

Singleandproud · 08/11/2024 09:53

You have just motivated me to stick the slow cooker on so we can have rice pudding tonight though.

OldTinHat · 08/11/2024 09:53

I had a pineapple finger for my breakfast today and now I'm hungry. I'd eat all of your rice puddings, curries, chocolate cake, wheat crunchies (bacon is the best flavour though!), chocolate cake (happy birthday!) with a pancake on top right NOW!

Thanks all. It's odd how sweet rice feels indulgent compared to porridge oats when there's probably not much difference between them.

You’re missing out the fibre in the oats, and porridge doesn’t usually have that much sugar. You can of course add dried fruit, nuts, fresh fruit to porridge.

Don’t try making your rice pudding with whole grain rice! Not the same texture at all.

I’ve taken to making rice pudding in a saucepan. No skin, which is a big advantage except to those strange people who like the skin.

slow cooker requires foresight, not my strong point

White rice is very different than oats, but eat whatever you like. Personally I occasionally gave my family apple crumble for breakfast. What can I say? We liked it.

Hopeles5 · 08/11/2024 09:57

Sounds delicious and surely healthier than Many other breakfasts?

You're an adult and can eat whatever the hell you want to for breakfast.

Calm down, it's just a lighthearted question.

2triangles · 08/11/2024 09:57

Good point about the fibre, there had to be some reason why rice and oats are not interchangeable.

Definitely trying this with coconut milk soon, thanks to whoever mentioned that!

DDs favourite breakfast was 'ice cream' on the beach in the summer holidays.

Frozen bananas whizzed up with Nutella or whole earth peanut butter and a bit of honey and then frozen again. Taken out in the morning and by the time we walked to the beach the perfect level of 'melted' to eat.

I’ve had apple crumble for breakfast in North Portugal. And on days when there wasn’t apple crumble, there was cake.

SparrowBarlo · 08/11/2024 10:05

My partner is from an Eastern Mediterranean country where cold rice pudding with cinnamon and chopped walnuts is a really popular breakfast

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 08/11/2024 10:06

Sounds amazing!

2triangles · 08/11/2024 10:08
