Would you be concerned… 3 year old bit at school.

My little boy was bit at school today. His ear!
Firstly I’m so anxious because the teacher said although they didn’t think it was bleeding there were spots of blood on the wipe. so rang the go. He had a Quick Look and said it looked like a graze so nothing needed.
does everyone agree with this? Would anything different be said at minor injuries or a&e (which is where we were originally told to go before trying our luck at the gp).

secondly the teacher didn’t even ring. She just told my partner at the end of the day on the door. Am I wrong to be completely annoyed about this.

Guessing you mean pre school. But no this absolutely does not sound like it needs minor injuries or anything else. Keep an eye on it for a few days but it sounds fine. I hope your little one is ok OP. I'd be annoyed too but biting happens with toddlers/kids of this age

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/11/2024 19:44

It happens occasionally unfortunately, at that age there are some children who are biters but usually only once. In a 30 odd years career in Early Years it happened a few times (once to a TA) but never so badly the victim had to go to hospital.

I'm not dismissing, it I'm sure the teacher spoke to the biter's parents and there will have been age appropriate consequences but you won't be told about them.

YorkieIsDefinitelyForGirls · 07/11/2024 19:47

Bloody hell, talk about an absolutely massive overreaction.

He wasn't bleeding apart from a few spots. I wouldn't have bothered the GP, let alone A&E.

These things happen, they're not ideal of course (my two both got bitten at preschool around the same age)...so long as the preschool deals with it properly, you have to chalk it up as a rite of passage unfortunately

NuffSaidSam · 07/11/2024 19:50

Kids bite. It happens.

I'd try and chill out a bit.

Don't go to A&E. Don't be cross at the teacher, what she did was fine.

Prisonpillow · 07/11/2024 19:50

It happens. And no need for minor injuries by your description.

DinnaeFashYersel · 07/11/2024 19:54

Children bite at that age. It happens. It's just one of those things.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 07/11/2024 19:55

Massive overreaction.

I also wouldn’t have contacted the GP but, as you did, what was the point of you’re going to ignore their advice?

Also, the teacher did tell you, in person. Why is that a problem? Why did it need a phone call?

mynameiscalypso · 07/11/2024 19:55

My son was bitten several times at nursery. I think it's pretty usual

SometimesCalmPerson · 07/11/2024 20:10

Would you really take the advice from strangers on the internet about an ear that we haven’t seen over that of a GP who has actually seen it? I would hope not.

It is horrible when things like this happen at nursery but like many of these things, it’s probably upset you more than it has your child. Your child is fine and the nursery's response was fine.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 07/11/2024 20:31

I'm not sure why you took him to the GP in the first place? Sounds a little dramatic from you. Obviously its not nice when these things happen but talking about going to hospital over a graze is ridiculous

Falseshamrok · 07/11/2024 20:35

What’s with all the weird posts about 3 year olds on aibu?!

Dramatic · 07/11/2024 20:37

What would you expect a GP or any other medical professional to do?

KrisAkabusi · 07/11/2024 20:38

It was a tiny injury that didn't need any treatment. You are over reacting.

steff13 · 07/11/2024 20:39

The doctor wasn't concerned, and he's seen the ear. So there's no reason to be concerned. Tell your kid to give Mike Tyson a wide berth in the future. 🤷‍♀️

LoquaciousPineapple · 07/11/2024 20:41

It happens. 3 is on the later end of normal for biting, but it is still normal behaviour for some this age.

My son gets bit occasionally and we only hear about it during the day if it left a mark or bled. If it didn't leave teeth marks, we just find out about it at pickup. Even then, we get an accident report update on the app (like we would for any very minor injury) rather than a phone call.

You're definitely overreacting, assuming this is a first occurrence. If it several times and they don't take action to stop it, then you'd be entitled to want to discuss it in depth and have a plan to stop it happening. But as a one off (or a few very sporadic incidents), they likely just told the child off and then kept an eye on them.

It’s school. He’s 3 so started in September. Thanks for the reply. I’m so annoyed. I know it happens but it hurts my heart to think of him being bitten by another child.

Where do you live OP? Didn't realise starting at 3 was a thing

Fightingtobepositive · 07/11/2024 20:49

Thanks for the reply’s all. I work in a school myself and have always been told that you seek advice if a note draws blood. So I rang the surgery who told me to go to a&e for a tetanus but didn’t think that was needed so tried my luck just going to surgery and seeing if the gp could take a look. So glad I did. But what the receptionist said has made me second guess.

If you're in the UK kids don't go to school at 3, it's pre school or nursery

sunshine244 · 07/11/2024 21:08

You went to A&E for a tiny bite? No wonder these places are always full - that's crazy.

My son got bitten at age 5 by a classmate. I was surprised at that age, but it wasn't a big deal. I certainly didn't go to hospital.

Cats, snakes, lizards... yes... kids nope. They don't carry dangerous infections and certainly not tetanus!

If it's a nursery Class in a school it often gets referred to as School ... because it's in the school. Why are people quibbling about this?

That.

It's a phase some kids go through.

School nursery starts at 3.

OP unless they’re is obvious broken skin I wouldn’t worry.

Pandasnacks · 07/11/2024 21:27

@Lifeglowup I no that, OP specified not a pre school (school nursery is the same as pre school)

No, school nurseries are a classes or two within a school. They wear the same uniform, have the same headteacher, the qualified teacher(s) and TA are employed by the school. They’re very much part of the school in the same way as reception are a class within the school.
