My little boy was bit at school today. His ear!
Firstly I’m so anxious because the teacher said although they didn’t think it was bleeding there were spots of blood on the wipe. so rang the go. He had a Quick Look and said it looked like a graze so nothing needed.
does everyone agree with this? Would anything different be said at minor injuries or a&e (which is where we were originally told to go before trying our luck at the gp).

secondly the teacher didn’t even ring. She just told my partner at the end of the day on the door. Am I wrong to be completely annoyed about this.

@Lifeglowup yep, that's also known as PRE SCHOOL. Yours may call it school nursery, many many others call it pre school. Pre school can also be in a nursery setting which isn't the same. But I am not wrong, not all schools are the same clearly.

Who calls it preschool? I have never seen say DoE or Ofsted or LEAs call it that.

Pandasnacks · 07/11/2024 21:38

@Lifeglowup give over. You are being deliberately obtuse for no reason, this thread is OPs not ours so I'm not responding to you again.

FennelFan · 07/11/2024 21:42

Who cares whether it's school or nursery. He's 3, and presumably surrounded by other 3 year olds. Bites happen, generally only head bumps are require a phone call to a parent. I don't think this is a big deal.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 07/11/2024 21:45

I know its horrible but try to be grateful your little one is the one bitten and not the biter. On balance you have a lot less to worry about this evening.

No, school nurseries are a classes or two within a school. They wear the same uniform, have the same headteacher, the qualified teacher(s) and TA are employed by the school. They’re very much part of the school in the same way as reception are a class within the school.

This wasn't (and still isn't) the way my DCs old nursery works. Attached to a school. Called School Name Nursery" No uniform. They don't attend assembly etc.

Pandasnacks · 07/11/2024 21:27

@Lifeglowup I no that, OP specified not a pre school (school nursery is the same as pre school)

I was a teacher in a School Nursery for 19 years and it was part of the school. It was never called pre-school.

Flumoxed · 07/11/2024 22:13

In a big class, the teacher would never get anything done if they had to stop the class and call the parents every time a child was bitten/pushed/pulled/hit/kicked/knocked/banged/barged/shoved/pinched/punched/stamped/stomped/elbowed/kneed/yanked/twisted/flicked/picked/poked..... Teacher was right to deal with it at the time and tell the parents at the end of the day.

Kibble29 · 07/11/2024 22:19

I’ve seen some overreactions on here but taking someone to get medical help for a grazed ear is beyond OTT.

Wish there was an option for the NHS to bill timewasters like this.

@CaptainMyCaptain that's one school... why would they have bothered changing it? I didn't say its never called nursery school. I said many schools call it pre school, because they do.

Noseybookworm · 07/11/2024 22:52

Blimey you are getting a hard time OP! You're right to be careful about a bite, we harbour a lot of bacteria in the mouth and the potential for infection is high. My son had a collision with another child at school and the other child's tooth went through his scalp - GP wouldn't see him (not contracted by local health board to deal with wounds!) so had to take him to local hospital minor injuries unit where a doctor cleaned the wound and gave antibiotics because he said bite wounds are high risk of infection! Keep an eye on your little one's ear and if it looks red, hot or any sign of pus, get him back to the doctors.

All the schools in both LAs where I have taught.

Fightingtobepositive · 08/11/2024 07:21

@Dramatic @Pandasnacks

yes it’s a school. A primary school in fact. He is part of a school and has to follow attendance etc the same as any other child. He has a mixed nursery and reception class. I work in a school in a mixed class of nursery reception and year 1. 3 year olds are very much pupils of the school.

I'm surprised you think this warranted a phone call if you work in a school.

We wouldn't phone home for this either. We phone if there is actual injury or swelling but not for something on this level. He could get a graze from falling over that would elicit more blood than this and we still wouldn't call home.

Communication at home time is fine.

Do you phone home every time a child is slightly hurt?

As you can see, I asked an innocent question because it's called pre school in the schools near me and in my own child's school, this is the same as a nursery class (which I hadn't heard before) uniform, part of the school etc. I clearly have not come back on and said your child isn't part of a school. Do you phone parents about biting in the middle of the day in your school? Have you not had biting in your classes before?

Fightingtobepositive · 08/11/2024 08:34

Yes we do phone for biting and injury. Biting especially. Especially if there is a mark or blood. Advised to ring for advice.

My son's best friend at that age was a biter and he was on the receiving end more than once. Also got bitten on the face by another child in reception. Never did I even think about taking them to see a health professional. Sounds like a minor graze, just keep an eye on it and if it starts to look red or swollen then seek medical advice. I agree with the person for said be grateful you aren't the parent of the biter, my friend used to be mortified but I downplayed it and didn't make a big deal out of it. My son didn't have any lasting harm either.

Thanks for all the reply’s. The comments don’t phase me. I chose to post on AIBU so the truth is what I expect.

@Noseybookworm thank you. Yes I’ve been made aware of the bacteria carried in our mouths and have always been advised to be cautious… it’s why I rang and was then again advised to get him looked at. so thank you for the comment. I knew I wasn’t completely crazy. Hope your son was ok. That sounds nasty. Was the bite deep?

the school thing. We are in wales and it’s definitely not pre school. We have a pre-nursery but the term after their third birthday they are full time nursery and follow the same rules etc as the rest of the school.

You went to A&E for a tiny bite? No wonder these places are always full - that's crazy.

My son got bitten at age 5 by a classmate. I was surprised at that age, but it wasn't a big deal. I certainly didn't go to hospital.

Cats, snakes, lizards... yes... kids nope. They don't carry dangerous infections and certainly not tetanus!

Human bites are just as dangerous as animal bites. We have a lot of bacteria in our mouths.

@Fightingtobepositive it wasn't too deep luckily as they said they wouldn't stitch it or glue it due to the infection risk - it bled a LOT though as scalp wounds do! Hope your little one is ok 💐
