Not sticking to feeding requirements for MIL cat

MIL in hospital, DH agreed to look after her cat (I’m mildly allergic so not impressed but antihistamines are working).

The thing is I have a fish and shellfish allergy. Cat is given fish or prawns every day. Obviously we can’t do that and have been giving alternatives but DH thinks it’s unfair on the cat, has told MIL who is now sad in hospital and texting about it - all the time. I’ve told dh is anyone mentions it to me one more time I’m putting the cat in the carrier and taking it over to SIL flat and that will be the end of us looking after it as I’m not prepared to risk my health.

Apparently I’m unkind and should be putting cat first as she’s in a strange house and being given different food

Someone else should pet sit the cat.... I have a close friend with severe allergies. I would never ask her to feed my cat something that would potentially make her ill.

I understand the cat needs this diet but I would be looking at another family member or a cattery.

Dotto · 07/11/2024 18:41

Now I want fish and prawns..

nothingshortofaswine · 07/11/2024 18:41

I am chuckling at the idea of a pescetarian cat, mine prefer chicken/beef to anything fishy anyway

Demandingcat · 07/11/2024 18:41

Yes ….dh didn’t need to tell her that has irritated me !

On what planet are the dietary considerations of a non human more important than the health/ life of an actual one?

YANBU

kiwiane · 07/11/2024 18:42

No way should the cat be fed fish in your home - your life would be put at risk and the cat was eating other stuff.

Octavia64 · 07/11/2024 18:43

My cats love fish and turn their nose up at meat based food.

They are fussy bastards though.

OP the cat will be better off in its home with Dh popping in or with SIL.

Demandingcat · 07/11/2024 18:37

I got some cat treats as an alternative but apparently they are ‘common’ and MIL doesn’t want them to be consumed 😂

That would just make me think she was being ridiculous about the whole thing! Many people’s cats have dried or tinned food etc and snacks! Not seafood every day 🤣

Roosnoodles · 07/11/2024 18:43

Honestly this is really bad. Even humans are advised to only eat seafood once a week. Pregnant people or infants are supposed to avoid and cats are only tiny. Thanks for listening. Also don’t put your health at risk.

sdds15 · 07/11/2024 18:44

does your dh generally undermine you like this?

Sparklfairy · 07/11/2024 18:44

So your DH knows your have a shellfish/fish allergy... and knows the cat eats exactly that every single day... and still agreed to look after the cat instead of suggesting SIL or another alternative? Is he quite dim?

I'm the biggest cat slave ever but this is ludicrous. Check it's ok with SIL first obviously, and then ask MIL what she would prefer if this situation makes her so 'sad' Hmm the cat is off fish for a few days? or stay at SIL?

Livinginaclock · 07/11/2024 18:44

I appreciate you are allergic but the cat does need the be fed it's usual food.
Is there somewhere else you can feed it?

LifeExperience · 07/11/2024 18:44

My mother almost died from a shellfish allergy. Your life is too important to feed her cat shellfish in your presence. The fact that your dh isn't on your side means you have a dh problem, a big one.

JackJarvisEsq · 07/11/2024 18:45

Stab your DH in the arse with your epi pen

SeatonCarew · 07/11/2024 18:45

Your husband is a dirty rat. Send him and the cat back to Mummy's house. Permanently.

Thepossibility · 07/11/2024 18:46

I'd actually be fuming. MIL cat not appearing common is more important than your actual wellbeing. GTF out of here!

Mine go mad for some Tesco finest Wiltshire ham. Not any other but they hear the packet and pounce while meowing at me.

InTheRainOnATrain · 07/11/2024 18:48

It’s actually really bad for the cat to be having that on the regular because of the mercury. Not to mention your allergy which obviously trumps the cat!! Just give it the regular food, no treats and then there’s no worry about something unfamiliar causing an upset stomach. Plus it’s better for everyone’s health, including the flipping cat. And MIL owes you a massive thank you, not whinging about how the moggy needs a shellfish buffet. She sounds like a nightmare and you have my sympathies.

levantine · 07/11/2024 18:48

This is ridiculous. The cat foregoes its fish and prawns in your house, or it can stay at home with someone going in to feed it.

She spends an absolute fortune on it which is fine it’s her cat but there’s a lot of food snobbery around what it eats

OP posts:
Womblewife · 07/11/2024 18:49

Do not risk your health for the sake of the cats diet! That is ludicrous. If you end up going into anaphylactic shock that will
not help anyone- you’ll end up next to mil in the hospital !
Dh is ridiculous to even bring this up.

I could try ham but would have to be m and s or Waitrose or MIL will be furious !!!!!

StudioFocusTricky · 07/11/2024 18:51

If your DH thinks that his mum's cat not being sad is more important to him than the life/health of his wife, then he is not a very good husband. Ask him to think very carefully whether he is actually willing to risk your life to make sure his mum's cat, whilst remaining adequately fed, doesn't suffer the indignity of a slightly-less-pampered-than-usual lifestyle.

Do not allow the fish and prawns in the house. So not allow the cat into your house if it is being fed fish/prawns in the garden.

Just tell the cat it’s Waitrose 🤣

fuzzwuss · 07/11/2024 18:53

Let MIL be furious! Your health is more important. Poor cat too on such a crap diet. Prawns are really high in cholesterol too.
