Pinworm Hell

Littlelionroar1982 · 07/11/2024 18:10

I’m so grossed out.

My toddler has pinworms! We saw them in his potty when he’d done a wee and poo and they were literally swimming in there. I’m horrified! Read up on Google that they come out at night so I checked before I went to be and there they were on his bum 🤢 He’s just started pre school perhaps got them there but he’s had no symptoms like bum scratching or eating differently however he has been waking up very early! I put some Vaseline on as it’s meant to stop them laying eggs and he’s not been waking up early since….

Anyway, he was obviously treated immediately (Monday) with OVEX and so have mum & dad as a precaution but we have a baby under 6 months and the GP said they can’t treat due to age. I’ve fumigated the house - all bedding changed daily, clean pjs every night etc - house bleached and hoovered everything. My hands are sore! Anyway, I’ve been checking myself and this morning I found a live one when I went to the loo in my stool - why are they not dead yet? We took the tablets 2 days ago. So I’ve bleached everything again and showered twice today I just feel so unclean! Then Asif that’s not bad enough. Getting baby ready at bath time decided to have a look and see if I could see anything - the tiniest white bits there in babies bum 😭 how do I treat them?! This is absolute hell I feel so dirty and guilty that we’ve all got them.

🆘

I really have no idea and I’m aware it’s only been 3 mins but I’m bumping this for you as I can feel the stress

YOOHOOITSMEEE · 07/11/2024 18:23

i get its a shock as its the first time but you have a lot more ick to come in the next 18 years

worms, headlice, rashes projectile vomiting, Diarrhoea
or both ends the same time

just wait utill you find a head full of live lice

KateJ521 · 07/11/2024 18:26

Bumping for you too as I can also feel the stress.

My advice is not to worry, you are doing everything right. Contact your gp tomorrow morning - they have alternative medication options for babies and might also be able to give you and your toddler something stronger too.

You are not unclean. Most families get a case at some point! Just one of those things and will pass (literally! 😂) quite soon.

GotToLeave · 07/11/2024 18:29

Feel for you OP. We had them. Got rid of them but DH then didn’t tell me he’d still got them. Got them all over again.

Secret bumworms, enough to LTB

DanaBarrett · 07/11/2024 18:33

Totally feel for you ❤️ it’s devastating when things like this happy, but children are grubby little creatures and unfortunately this comes with the territory (one of the gifts that keeps on giving!).
Please don’t think anyone thinks any less of you, they pass between children like no-one’s business. If you can face it, let your child’s teacher know, apparently they can be carried in the play sand!

Littlemisscapable · 07/11/2024 18:36

I don't think they are totally gone until the 2nd doze of medication. Don't stress they are really common. If no one has any side effects then its all good it will go.

Yup. Should have.

toastandtwo · 07/11/2024 18:45

So firstly you really need 2 doses to get rid of them (to be honest I make everyone take 3). Make sure everyone is washing first thing as the eggs are mostly laid at night for at least the fortnight until the second dose.
It’s horrible your baby has them but they aren’t going to spread them as they won’t be touching their bottom or the toilet at all so in a way that’s less stressful for you (unless your baby gets upset by them of course). As long as your baby doesn’t ingest any eggs they won’t get reinfected so the worms will all be gone without treatment in 6 weeks, but the doctor might have something for them to treat. Good luck OP. I absolutely hate them and we’ve had them heaps due to my nail biting children!

Mynewnameis · 07/11/2024 18:48

I always do a second dose on whoever has the bum worms. The people with no bum worms seen get away with one.
For the baby, you will have to ask your GP. I doubt anyone can answer this. Perhaps gloves for nappy changes?

Vaseline around the bum every night stops them coming out to lay eggs

UrbanDieter · 07/11/2024 19:03

I used to buy the liquid in bulk & worm at least once a term during the reception /younger primary years. Other parents would look blank if I mentioned it yet I know they were coming from somewhere. My kids were finger suckers/nailbiters so the eggs were getting in easily.
Lower sugar intake and knickers on at all time.

Imbluedalale · 07/11/2024 19:17

Only way I got rid of mine was by putting garlic paste on area. They absolutely hate garlic and it stops them breeding. Although I wouldn’t recommend breaking wind with that on

mumsm · 07/11/2024 19:23

To try to help keep the nails as short as you can.

I expect the preschool know about this, surely they have seen them is a child's poo.

Mine had them a few times in a row and I truly believe they kept getting them from a certain play place as we had always been there around 1-2 weeks before they told me about their fickly bums 🤢

Littlelionroar1982 · 07/11/2024 21:18

Thank you everyone I’ve stopped googling now and this has been helpful! I didn’t realise baby’s would pass on their own. I will keep an eye out and continue cleaning everything, have bought nail brushes and everyone is getting washed first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Going to bed with a shiny vaselined bum hole too 🫠 night all and thanks again! X

See a gp about the baby.

I've never heard of them going on their own without treatment. Each new generation lays more eggs.

Toodaloo1567 · 07/11/2024 22:04

If it’s any consolation, they are harmless and have been co-existing with humans since the beginning of time it would seem. There’s also some research that suggests pinworm immune responses are associated with protection against asthma. Here’s an example https://www.medicalresearchfoundation.org.uk/news/how-molecules-from-parasitic-worms-could-help-prevent-and-treat-asthma

If your children are scratching at night, one way you can break the cycle is to make their bedtime clothing prevents being able to scratch where eggs have been laid.

Dr Henry McSorley is investigating the immune responses that cause asthma and how molecules from parasitic worms can control this. Find out more

Wear knickers at night then carefully take them off to wash. We quarantined soft toys too!

And deffo I'm sure took the worming meds at least three times!! Hate the little fuckers but I think they're easier than headlice!! Those little shits go hard.

Yes but the eggs only hatch into worms inside the gut. So if nobody’s touching the eggs and then putting their fingers in their mouths they won’t hatch into new worms and the existing worms will eventually die off.

jenny38 · 07/11/2024 23:06

You are doing everything right. No sharing towels. Shower in the morning, as eggs laid at night- this was a piece of advice I read.

Littlelionroar1982 · 08/11/2024 07:39

I think I’d prefer headlice at least they’re not breading inside your body 😂🤢
