Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

I would like to say oh no never how awful not under any circumstances...
but truthfully?

If, for example, my children hadn't eaten that day and I didn't know how I was going to feed them the next day then yes, yes I would.
So not a yes or a no but an "it depends"

It was wine and dinner party food.

@Ponter How utterly crass, dishonest and entitled! To openly admit it and claim the ‘majority’ of people would do the same is cowardly. You’re a thief, own it … and people like you put the price of shopping up for everyone else!

Don't think anyone was starving!

Would you go through a self service checkout without paying? Or do you think that is worse than what you have done

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/11/2024 15:01

They probably will just let you pay for it if you’ve never done it before. But it’s still immoral.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 07/11/2024 15:01

Lmao at all the posters who are horrified but are definitely gonna give it a go. We can all pretend we wouldn't even dream of doing anything like this but it makes people feel good to type out how moral and perfect they are to other people. I don't do online shopping because I fucking hate waiting around for it but if I could have a weeks worth of shopping land at my house for free then I doubt I would be ringing up offering to pay but I would expect it to be taken from my bank eventually, I wouldn't lose any sleep if it never was though. I'm not a common thief or lowlife scum either and just last week I found a purse in a trolley (in a carrier bag) and went out of my way to return it to its owner so that makes me a decent honest person doesn't it? I would still happily take a weeks worth of shopping for free though

whatkatydid2014 · 07/11/2024 15:01

Call them and tell them you called and were told order was cancelled but then it got delivered and now you have some stuff you want and some you don’t and what can be done. They may well say it’s fine and to keep it and then you get it for free but have at least attempted to pay for it. Ultimately in this scenario it would be a bit of a shame to send it back as likelihood is at least some of it would be binned having been out of proper fridge/freezer in the truck for too long. I’ve had similar happen by accident. I cancelled online shop several days in advance, it was sent anyway due to a glitch and husband (who didn’t know I’d cancelled) accepted it. Also had extra items and missing items in past. In all cases I’ve called and all the times we got something we didn’t order/had cancelled they just said it was fine to keep it.

Tiddlywinkly · 07/11/2024 15:01

From your responses it looks like you've already made up your mind what you're doing (or rather, not doing) and you're ok with it.

potatocakesinprogress · 07/11/2024 14:41

She did it on purpose because it had worked for her friend, it wasn't an accident.

She has said multiple times she did not purposefully place the order and then cancel with the hope of stealing.

I think we have people on this thread telling porkies.

Calliopespa · 07/11/2024 15:02

I would feel so guilty I’d have trouble swallowing it. Don’t choke!

Ohhbaby · 07/11/2024 15:04

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:57

No hand on heart I didn’t orchestrate the whole thing but I know my friend had cancelled once from the same supermarket and the van still showed up. So when the opportunity presented itself I thought I’d chance it.

In your OP this is the second time this happened, so what again about hand over heart?

godmum56 · 07/11/2024 15:04

That's theft and puts prices up for everybody

betterangels · 07/11/2024 15:04

I can't afford wine atm but at least I'm not stealing or asking about stealing on the Internet. There's always a silver lining, I guess.

You can dress it up how you want, it's still stealing.

Also, this. Thanks for that.

BobbyBiscuits · 07/11/2024 15:05

@MrsSunshine2b well maybe we should all try and do it then? Sorry but I don't steal.

Nah, she’s said she chanced it as her friend did it before, then when called out on that she says oh I didn’t MEAN to order 28 days of food, cancel it, then hang about the window like Norman Bates mother stalking the van to see if it still turned up 🤣 I reckon the address will be blacklisted.

Yes the dinner party food is a million miles away from this situation!

ArtfulLeader · 07/11/2024 15:05

Many psychological studies show that dishonesty is highly common when the likelihood of detection is low.

For example the restaurant change experiment or the dice rolling experiment

JawsCushion · 07/11/2024 15:06

I once had a massive shop delivered as I had forgotten it was coming due to booking it weeks and weeks in advance due to it being lock down and slots were hard to get. I'd gone out three days before and done the same big shop as I was developing a phobia of going out and had stayed in for nine weeks. I accepted the order and paid. Of course.

You are not helping yourself, you have no excuse as you are a knowingly a thief, not an accidental one.

Another time I had an order delivered and rang up as I'd been charged £7 for something I hadn't received. I was refunded. When I fully put the shopping away I found the item so I rang them back. I can't remember if they charged me or not but I told the truth either way and they were grateful.

Floralnomad · 07/11/2024 15:06

I would have refused the delivery or phoned up and paid but that is because I’m an honest person not a thief .

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/11/2024 15:06

Ihopeithinkiknow

I wouldn’t, unless I was desperate, which OP isn’t.

Lifelover16 · 07/11/2024 15:06

No.
it’s stealing

BettyBootsie · 07/11/2024 15:06

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago - had to cancel over the phone a few hours before my slot in an emergency. I got a cancellation email straight away with details of my refund. About an hour after my 1hr slot had ended (and still no-one at home) I got a phonecall from the driver saying he was knocking at the door! I explained about the cancellation and apologised for wasting his time, but it did cross my mind 5 minutes later that I might have got it for nothing if someone had been in the house ... 😋
