Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

I think they probably already know that. It's pretty self-evident. Maybe you should write a letter telling them that you're fine with stealing, and you don't care who does it? You being one of the few outliers here??

I don’t feel the need to write to someone to say I don’t care how they price in stealing. If you’re all ‘objecting’ you’d be better off sending it to the right people who can do anything about it instead of whining about one person stealing a food shop.

ScruffMuffin · 07/11/2024 19:25

No.

I recently bought a watch on Amazon, for about £80. They sent me two by mistake, so I called them and arranged to return one. I was absolutely shocked by the number of people who said they would have regifted or sold the extra one. Really?!

I couldn't be more calm lol - I am laughing out loud at the comments in your posts! Keep them coming - it's a dull Thursday night!!

I've reared three children to adulthood and I never once felt moved to teach them how to post on MN. And I can comment on whatever I like, within the guidelines on the forum. I am a bit confused as to why you seem to think that posters should refer to each other's children on an actual parenting forum??!! It's hilarious actually.

You can be sympathetic to the plight of struggling people and still condemn a common thief. I will never, ever be an apologist for stealing.

You can comment on what you like, im not telling you not to, but this debate is about the ethics of stealing from a large company - it's nothing to do with our children. As far as I'm aware there are lots of people on aibu who don't even have kids

To comment and imply I'm raising mine incorrectly, because you disagree eith my opinion, is in poor form and a bit nasty. I myself don't care about your children.

Nor do I care that (or get why) you're laughing - but again, I'm not telling you what to do

I'm gonna continue to post on mumsnet and carry on with my life - I suspect this amount of attention has made you giddy on your dull Thursday so I'm not gonna keep the comments coming towards you, although you'll see me continue to debate elsewhere

I'm sure you'll be lurking 🙄🤭

Robinredd · 07/11/2024 19:29

I wouldn't judge you as I'd probably have done this years ago. In fact I definitely would have. But I try to put out good energy so I'd probably pay for it.

TyrannasaurusJex · 07/11/2024 19:29

OP, would you go to the same supermarket, fill your trolley with the same groceries, walk towards the tills and notice that the security guard was distracted so "chance it" and walk out without paying? Because this is EXACTLY the same.

Waste of breath...

Waste of breath is moaning online judging one person, clearly you feel strongly about it, but not strongly enough to tell the supermarkets? That's pointless.

Arlanymor · 07/11/2024 19:33

I wasn’t going to say this, but now I am. I work for a charity closely involved with food banks and some of the (thankfully rare) attitudes on this post towards basic theft are disgraceful and thankfully not shared by the majority of people.

I was with a food bank last week when a woman - don’t worry all identifiable details changed - walked in with a bag full of 1ps. She asked for a bronze bag (they have tiers of food bags - a bronze bag is the equivalent of £15-worth of provisions for £3) and put her bag of money on the table and said: “I think it totals £3, should all be there.” The foodbank manager said to her, gently: “It’s completely ok, we have some surplus, you can have the bag without paying.”

The lady said - and I will NEVER forget this - “I appreciate this service and to take food without paying would feel wrong to me. Please take my money, I have my pride and I want to pay.” Took a good minute to manually count up the money, it was £3 to the dot. She said thank you and went on her way.

So here’s a big FUCK YOU to everyone who thinks we ALL thieve or that we are entitled to screw over foodsellers of any description. By all means vote with your feet, buy your food elsewhere, but this attitude that it’s ok to take provisions without payment because it’s ‘big business’ - you have no pride, you have no idea what impact it has on the business when you steal (or rather you don’t care) and you don’t have ONE OUNCE of the dignity of this lady.

I drove her home because she was a bit unsteady on her feet (older person). And then had to drive around the estate for a bit before I went back to the food bank because I was crying with abject humility at this woman who had literally raided her sofa cushions to pay her way in life. Some people on this thread suck. And stealing food for a dinner party? You are disgusting, you just are.

I won't be lurking at all. I will be posting what I wish to, when I wish to post it, within the rules.

You are completely overreacting. You were asked ages ago if you taught your child that it was ok to steal so long as it was from large corporations. There's nothing "poor form" or "nasty" whatsoever in anything I have said. I think you're a tad oversensitive for a public forum tbh. I don't think it was me, yet you are fixating on my posts. It's getting very boring now. You're clearly not someone who can be reasoned with. For your information, I'm a mature, intelligent, adult woman and I don't get "giddy" ffs. I'm out.

If my children were hungry and I couldn’t afford to feed them, then yes I would. Under any other circumstances, absolutely not.

What a wonderful lady. If only there were more like her, with such dignity, pride, integrity and honesty. Some people could learn a lot from her, if they weren't too arrogant.

Exactly, for lots of people, whether something is illegal or moral will only depend on whether they're caught!

Thank you, she really was, I teared up a bit when writing it now as it brought it all home to me again. She was so determined that she was going to pay.

I was in a meeting today with someone with the Poverty Truth Network and I think my feelings are close to the surface as some people are so glib about what is theft and the excuses for shit behaviour masquerading as personal moralising on this forum is insane at times.

There are people in world in unbelievable distress out there who would think the attitudes and actions of some people on here completely reprehensible. These are people not on the breadline but far below it, people who would literally give someone their last penny, many of whom don’t have a home.

And then you see shit on here about how evil supermarkets are and this idea that ‘well if THEY let me get away with it then it’s THEIR fault!’ No, it’s yours, take some damned self responsibility.

betterangels · 07/11/2024 19:51

Arlanymor thank you for your post. It made me tear up. I've not been to food banks as we don't have them where I am, but I can relate to having exact change in coins and counting it up at the till. Thank you for being kind to her.

You’re so welcome and sorry for upsetting you, but it is upsetting isn’t it? Her dignity really affected me, choked me up actually, and being decent to one another really does cost nothing. Hope you are doing ok and thanks for your message, I appreciate it. ♥️

What the hell is wrong with you, Op.
Genuinely shocked about your deviousness

ttcat37 · 07/11/2024 20:13

@Ponter Next time you go to the supermarket, and you think “shit, that’s expensive”, it’s because of thieves like you. You put the prices up for everyone else- everyone struggling to make ends meet. Unlike you, just a dishonest, selfish thief.
