Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

I think that says a lot more about you than it does about the majority of posters to be fair, and not in a good way.

What is certain is that the retailer has the information to know that it’s delivered something that hasn’t been paid for. Whether it choses to do anything about it is another matter - and maybe they’ll just assume the delivery driver took it and investigate them instead.

Either way it’s likely to remain on your customer record, and so when you do actually need some goodwill from them it might be less than forthcoming. But,as they say, you reap what you sow!

Yep, absolutely this. If/when they realise their mistake it could well involve the delivery driver at some point.

KeepYaHeadUp · 07/11/2024 18:23

No way. I once noticed 3 x cans of Coke I hadn't ordered in my online shop. Told the delivery driver and he said they were a promotion, but I'd have given them back

MumOfOneAllAlone · 07/11/2024 16:12

I think there's no need to bring my child into a hypothetical debate

Mind your children and ill mind mine

But I think that stealing food in this way from a supermarket, when they treat the poor so badly is fine.

These big companies are shafting people, it's really awful, and no government is willing to stop them. Making record profits while people are struggling is immoral, far more so than a mum stealing basics or getting a free food shop when she could barely sfford it anyway.

I think there is, if you are raising your child to think that it's fine to steal in this manner.

I've brought mine up to be honest, and they are, to a fault, as I am, and as were my parents before me.

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/11/2024 18:26

MumOfOneAllAlone · 07/11/2024 16:16

Oh well I still don't think its a bad as what these companies are doing to innocent people who don't have lots of money

That's a different issue entirely, and not a justification to steal.

ladyamy · 07/11/2024 18:26

Geranen · 07/11/2024 15:42

@TheSerenityPrayer it's not "a reward for your honesty," are you six? It was just more awkward for them to charge you.

That was uncalled for!

LemonSherbertDabs · 07/11/2024 18:28

@Ponter Do you think this is different from walking out of the supermarket with a trolley full and not paying?

It's not.

Prices will go up because the margins for supermarkets are tiny. About 10%.
The more that is eroded by theft, the more everyone else (who's honest) will pay for your theft.

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/11/2024 18:28

MumOfOneAllAlone · 07/11/2024 16:21

I don't think theft is the only option

But I don't think someone is bad if they steal. I really don't care. People are struggling really badly. I don't think badly of someone who steals when they're struggling

Just because I don't need to steal (other than claiming back on just eat in the past) doesn't mean I need to judge someone or paint them in a bad light

The OP is not "struggling", just plain thieving, because she can.

GivingitToGod · 07/11/2024 18:28

100% NO
Honesty and integrity are very important

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/11/2024 18:30

Startinganew32 · 07/11/2024 16:22

Yeah I’d just tell myself that I’d pay when they chase me for it. And then obviously do that if they did chase. But I doubt I’d lose too much sleep over tescos profits tbh

You'd only lose sleep if you had a conscience and felt bad for being a common thief. Not Tesco profits.

Concretejungle1 · 07/11/2024 18:31

Think you and your mate are awful. I hope they do notice and charge you.
you say you didn’t plan it, but yet got the idea from your mate?
you have either come on here to boast Hmm or for people to tell you it’s ok, but it really isn’t.
no morals with this.
We teach kids not to steal, how is this different? Really if you think?

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/11/2024 18:33

LBFseBrom · 07/11/2024 16:29

No I wouldn't but I can imagine being tempted and at times in the past when I was quite poor, I probably would have given in. We'll never know. However I do not judge you. I am pretty sure you won't do it again.

Please move on from this, don't dwell on it. We all make mistakes, we're human beings and nobody has died.

Do something nice for someone, anonymously if possibly and certainly discreetly, then write it all off.

Good luck.

She isn't "dwelling on it" - she's bloody delighted with her cunning!

Except theft affects the workers. Nobody cares about that.
the workers lose out on shifts, on being taken on on full time, on extra staff so staff have to cover more work etc

im very glad i no longer work in this field.

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:57

No hand on heart I didn’t orchestrate the whole thing but I know my friend had cancelled once from the same supermarket and the van still showed up. So when the opportunity presented itself I thought I’d chance it.

Yes you did. You got the idea from a friend. You’ve done it before. You were having a dinner party and ordered lovely expensive things and stole them.

SilverChampagne · 07/11/2024 18:34

Ponter · 07/11/2024 14:09

I don’t live rurally. If I get banned I can switch to pretty much any supermarket that delivers. The only reason we go to this supermarket is because there are a few supermarket own items I prefer

But would prefer not to have to pay for 😳

SilverChampagne · 07/11/2024 18:36

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/11/2024 18:28

The OP is not "struggling", just plain thieving, because she can.

Not struggling at all, she was having a dinner party!

JVC24601 · 07/11/2024 18:36

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:55

I’m not boasting. Never once stole before. Always try do the right thing normally. I just chanced it. I have to be honest we were hosting a dinner party which didn’t go ahead so the nice items - wine, meat just tempted me to chance it.

And yet you’re not tempted to shoplift those nice options when you go into the shop yourself? Why not- fear of getting caught? It seems your morals are purely based on whether you’ll get caught, rather than doing the right thing because it’s the right thing. Certainly not the attitude of someone I’d want to be around.

To be clear, you have unequivocally committed fraud and could reasonably be prosecuted if they chose.

Curious as to what else you’d be willing to try.

HappyNewYear2027 · 07/11/2024 16:50

Everyone is so righteous, and full of shit.

Is that what you think of people who are honest? Shame on you.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 07/11/2024 18:39

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/11/2024 18:24

I've brought mine up to be honest, and they are, to a fault, as I am, and as were my parents before me.

I'm raising my child to apply common sense and empathy to peoples predicaments and not judge

I'm also raising her not to speak about other people's children during an otherwise civilised debate on mumsnet. 🙄 Please do calm down.

I stand by what I've said - big companies who price gouge and make record profits whilst chucking excuses at the average person do not deserve my sympathy when people steal from them. Somebody struggling to put food on the table isn't typically going to encourage their children to steal - they're just doing what they need to do to get by

I realise that op's scenario is different but I still don't judge her - I judge these disgusting companies who put prices up when the whole world is struggling, rather than accepting a smaller profit and passing on savings

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/11/2024 18:40

thebigbrownbear · 07/11/2024 17:36

Of course we all would and the posters who said they wouldn't are lying. Who wouldn't take a free food delivery from a large supermarket who wouldn't notice the loss

What a depressing opinion to have, @thebigbrownbear. I’d hate to believe that every human being was a thief or a potential thief, and that anyone who says they aren’t, must be lying. I couldn’t live in a world that was as dark and cynical as yours - how can you trust anyone, if everyone is a liar and a thief?

I could tell you that I have always returned, or tried to return, items that were delivered in error, and that I’ve even gone back into the supermarket to pay for a Milky Way that had slipped under a bag in the trolley and been overlooked at the checkout, but you would tell me I am a liar.

Lavenderflower · 07/11/2024 18:41

I once sneaked a packet of sweets in the bag when a I was about 3-4 year old and got a telling off. I haven't stolen since. If it got delivered it likely you will still be charged.

Freeasabird76 · 07/11/2024 18:42

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:53

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

I said you weren't being unreasonable as I thought "well you cancelled it,it's not your fault they still turned up" but then you've blatantly said you got the idea from your friend so was purposely done to steal.

adriftinadenofvipers · 07/11/2024 18:42

JollyPinkFox · 07/11/2024 17:03

Oh give it a rest. I haven't stolen a thing in my life that I can think of. You lot are the judgemental ones, why do you care if OP has 'stolen' one food delivery? Of what consequence is it to you and your life? Get off your high horse bootlicking for a supermarket. It's embarrassing.

It's way more embarrassing defending a thief.

If you think that's ok, then one can hardly trust your assertion that you "haven't stolen a thing".

Nobody is on a "high horse". I didn't seek the OP out - she posted on a public forum and I am entitled to reply as I see fit. Your reply is very rude!

Indeed. I'd sooner be on a site full of righteous people saying stealing is wrong than one where lowlifes congratulate each other for stealing.

dreamer24 · 07/11/2024 18:46

I'd have thought you'd still be charged for a cancelled order that was delivered? I assume the money will still leave your bank at some point OP, don't get too excited!
