Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

No. And I can't believe you posted about it. It's stealing.

oakleaffy · 07/11/2024 15:18

An expensive order made up of dinner party stuff - Where @Ponter “got the idea from
a friend “

Now bragging on MN.

I used to work on customer services, and I can tell you that they won't miss it, but if you let them know it will be a pain in the arse administrationally (I'm not actually sure that's a word). Also, the amount of perfectly good food that's wasted every day by most stores is phenomenal, hundreds of pounds worth. Having said that, tell them if it's making you feel bad OP, feeling guilty about something is horrible even if it's not important to the other party.

There's someone who thinks they are a wit...

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 07/11/2024 15:20

No. However much you try to justify it you're just a common thief.

She doesn’t feel guilty, she’s like Augustus Gloop right now 🤣

It's administratively 😊

These are fun threads 😅

I genuinely wouldn't do it and if I get something extra in my shopping that I've not paid for I always phone and let them know (tbf they generally let me keep the item free anyway)

You say you've never 'stolen' anything before so I'm interested in why you think this was different? To me you either want to be an honest person or you don't. I dont like people who are dishonest but desperately try and justify it.

You either think stealing is ok or you don't. I don't think society works well if people think it's ok to steal things. It just fucks everything up for those of us who are honest.

There are some countries like Japan where you can leave phones and handbags on the table completely unattended when you are in coffee shops. It's really nice.

periodiclabel · 07/11/2024 15:26

Asking again - which supermarkets let you do this?

When I've called Tesco or Ocado asking to cancel because I can't get home in time they've always said they'll have to charge me anyway for all the perishables. The most they've ever conceded is to change the slot and only then if the van isn't already on the road. It's the big downside of online groceries.

BreatheAndFocus · 07/11/2024 15:28

Disgusting. It’s just as much stealing as if you walked round the store putting everything in your trolley - then walked out the door without paying.

Do you know who pays for all this stolen stuff? It’s us, as prices are increased in response to shoplifters and blatant thieves.

Hopefully, the system will update and you’ll be charged for it all, as you should be.

Cookiejar753 · 07/11/2024 15:29

Didn't think I'd come to here to see someone admitting to thieving food. Think it's safe to say that no, most good people wouldn't do that. Hope you set a better example to any children you might have.

I don’t believe in karma. Plenty of examples of twats never getting their comeuppance.

The supermarket made the error.

I’ve never once stolen previously so i can’t be that much of a degenerate

You could have explained to the driver that you'd cancelled. You cancelled earlier in the day knowing well there was a possibility that the driver would turn up. You are a thief, pure and simple. Don't pretend otherwise.

JollyPinkFox · 07/11/2024 15:29

People on here are honestly so supercilious, deliberately stealing stuff is one thing, accepting food you cancelled when the shop still sent it is another thing entirely. If they chase it up just say you forgot you cancelled and see if they make you pay but I expect they will write it off if it is ever discovered. It's so weird to me given the COL crisis that people have more sympathy for huge companies who generate a profit over normal people getting the odd turn up for the books. Also do not believe most people would turn the delivery away.

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

Your honour, might I have a couple of minutes for a word with my client regarding her initial "not guilty" plea?

SpiggingBelgium · 07/11/2024 15:31

I think people talking about you being banned from whichever supermarket it is are being dramatic. Is what you did dishonest? Of course. But if the supermarket spot it, surely all you’d have to do is say “I’m sorry; when the delivery turned up I thought the cancellation hadn’t gone through. I didn’t realise I hadn’t been charged”.

So you planned this scam? hope they catch up with you and take the money from your account. I have been piss poor and would not pull a trick like this. It is just wrong, No doubt you will be rarionlising it in your head " i have spent loads of money wth this company" "they make huge profits" "they won't miss it" but the bottom line is that you have deliberately scammed them

MumOfOneAllAlone · 07/11/2024 15:31

I'm gonna go against the grain and say, I don't care about people stealing from big companies in the slightest

Asda increased their prices and have made record profits when most of its shoppers were really struggling. These companies don't care about their customers at all

When I do an online shop, half of their 'just essentials' range is not available, however is available when you go into store

Just think of how many elderly and disabled people are paying higher prices as they can't get to the shop. Disgusting.

I would be worried though that, as I'm a regular customer and need to shop there, that there would be some blowback, so I wouldn't unless I was absolutely sure.

That said, I'm have placed an order on just eat and claimed the refund under the food being cold etc x

Goldusty · 07/11/2024 15:31

Really? Do you feel no shame? We are all tempted from time to time BUT when we know we've done something wrong at least the decent thing to do is to own up. I have little respect for you as a person.

MSLRT · 07/11/2024 15:32

Why on earth would you come on Mumsnet to boast about something like this.

"I don't know how it happened" you say, wide-eyed and twiddling your parasol.

FFS, you fucking knew what you were doing, and you know exactly what you're doing by starting this thread. You carry on.

So no understanding the COL crisis is in part because of people stealing and the likes of you claiming refunds from JustEat. Why don't we all just steal everything and the big supermarkets will collapse and then that'll serve them right?

Toomanyemails · 07/11/2024 15:34

I think you should inform the supermarket that they delivered after you cancelled. To be honest, there's a good chance they'll tell you just to keep the groceries and not ask you to pay, since you had received confirmation of the cancellation over the phone and on the app. But inform them for the sake of karma!

CurlyAndBurly · 07/11/2024 15:34

The supermarket may have made the error - but you had every opportunity to put things right and you deliberately chose not to. Therefore it’s stealing, plain and simple.

I don’t believe in karma either but I think when we know we’ve done something wrong, it weighs heavy on the conscience. The fact you’re asking for opinions here suggests you already know it’s not right.

We live in a society where people think they can have what they want when they want. Cancelling on the day of delivery when your order has probably already been selected - which it obviously had been - does’t sit right with me either. The least you could do is pay up.
