I am in despair over the world

71 million Ameucans voting for a rapist misogynist, spineless sycophants like Starmer congratulating above mentioned abuser, go into work and it's all just the same talk of photocopiers, sport and trivilaiitoes as the world goes to hell. I'm genuinely in despair and have never ever felt this isolated

The American election does not personally affect you (assuming you are British). Don’t you have more important things to worry about in Britain?

BigTubOfLard · 07/11/2024 08:41

Trump was voted in once before and the world didn't spin off its axis nor did the universe implode. You'll be okay hun.

safaridreaming · 07/11/2024 08:44

I don’t mean to down play that Trump being elected is absolutely terrible (because it is) but things were also quite terrible under Biden on a world-wide scale.

What a shit show.

Boomer55 · 07/11/2024 08:45

I’m more concerned about this government. 🤷‍♀️

Well this is somewhat naive. If he introduces restrictive trade tariffs we'll all feel it.

If he acts in the way he might in Europe he will cause further unrest in Europe which will impact us.

T4phage · 07/11/2024 08:49

The world is full of narcissistic megalomaniacs or immature pathetic thickos when it comes to leaders now.

His one big policy is "drill drill drill" (for oil). So yes, that absolutely does affect all of us when we're already on target for catastrophic climate change in our lifetime and we have just a few years (basically his entire presidency) to take action to avoid the worst outcomes being predicted.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/11/2024 08:51

Don't worry OP. Sure it's going to be great. He's going to stop all the wars and show us how to achieve zero inflation and illegal immigration. He's going to cut crime and keep people safe.

He's going to be brilliant and show us how to be brilliant too.

Lentilweaver · 07/11/2024 08:51

Step away from the news a bit
Walk in nature
Cuddle family or pets
Watch a fun tv show
Go to an art gallery
I am stepping away from all the analysis today. And I have close family in red states.

I hate when people trot out this smarmy line, it just shows how uneducated they are. Culturally, America is one of the biggest worldwide influences - attitudes over there travel worldwide. Not only that, international trade affects us, as does nuclear war if he decides to push the big red button with his pal Putin for a good ol' World War III. Emphasis on the word "WORLD".

Oh, and I forgot the impact on climate change which affects the entire planet.

x2boys · 07/11/2024 08:53

I'm no fan of Keir Starmer but as the Prime Minister he has to be seen to be professional and keep relations with other country's political leaders as smooth as possible, what else could he have done but Congratulate Trump?( even if its through gritted teeth.)

DeliciousApples · 07/11/2024 08:54

I'd not have been over the moon whomever America voted in as they are both not ideal but we have other things to worry about ie our own government.

I do feel a little bit if the fear we had in the 80s creeping back in though. The whole threat of nuclear war hovering around the back of our minds....

The Bible says that the end of the world will come once the lion lays down with the lamb.

So even if this Middle East stuff gets sorted it could still be bad for the world if that comes true!

DancingLions · 07/11/2024 08:54

What's the point of despair? Nothing you can do.
All we can do as individuals is keep going. If you can make a difference in things that matter to you, great. Otherwise you just have to carry on and live your life.

Agree with this.

Lentilweaver · 07/11/2024 08:55

Of course Starmer has to congratulate Trump.

FinallySleep · 07/11/2024 08:57

I felt that same despair when Israel's IDF started bombing the shit out of Gaza l. That feeling of despair and helplessness has only got worse. The events of this week only add to my existing sense of disillusionment with world powers and how little empathic progress humanity has made in the last few thousand years :(

PlantDoctor · 07/11/2024 08:58

There's a lot to worry about, but more and more I'm starting to realise that unless I can personally change it then I need to stop letting it occupy so much brain space. I think for me that means visiting news websites much less often, and enjoying the world in front of me.

This. He's done exactly what other world leaders have done. What do you expect world leaders to do OP, stamp their feet and refuse to acknowledge him? As for the people at your work, what do you want them to do? Everyone sitting around "in despair" will never achieve anything. Life goes on.

FastFood · 07/11/2024 09:01

Of course Starmer (and Macron, Meloni, Tusk etc...) have to congratulate Trump, as much as I hate him, he's been elected and there's this thing called diplomacy, you can't just shun the US just because you don't like their legally elected president, we're not going to end diplomatic relationships over some misalignment of values.

Hi RingoJuice

I disagree. The leader of the USA is one of the most influential leaders of the world and his decisions could most definitely have impacts felt at home. His decisions over Israel/Gaza, Ukraine and climate change could directly impact us in the UK both financially and in other ways.

Furthermore, a man in such an influential position on the global stage, who is a known sex offender, convicted fellon and spreader of disinformation puts the works in a precarious position both by way of morality but also security.

A man known to spread extremist views, homophobia, racism and misogyny having been elected as leader of the 'free world's is pretty unnerving ...

Yes this is my thought too, he is after all going to make America great again (again). It is just puzzling that the didn't do it in his first 4 years in office.

I think it very much affects us. The US swinging to the far right has implications for the whole world. Putin will end up with at least part of Ukraine and could be emboldened to move on to an EU country next without America to restrain him. It will encourage the far right in the UK and media millionaires will be further draw to backing their ideas and refraining them as reasonable so people start to accept things they might have balked at before. And for all the reasons mentioned above.

GreengrassofW · 07/11/2024 09:08

@T4phage Yes this. The full blown narcissist leader with childish traits, voted for by other childlike & developmentally stunted adult children who think he's cool. Absolutely terrifying.
