I am in despair over the world

71 million Ameucans voting for a rapist misogynist, spineless sycophants like Starmer congratulating above mentioned abuser, go into work and it's all just the same talk of photocopiers, sport and trivilaiitoes as the world goes to hell. I'm genuinely in despair and have never ever felt this isolated

You need to count your blessings you live in a free peaceful (comparatively) country.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 07/11/2024 22:05

OP between the cost of living crises and the more and more extreme "progressive" policies, people, ordinary people, just reached breaking point. Tbh you should probably be glad this happened now and not in four years time when the pendulum would have swung back even harder.

Circumferences · 07/11/2024 22:05

we will all be dead either in a nuclear war or because the planet is utterly destroyed as a human habitat.

The Democrats would oversee this without a second thought.

The real problem in American politics is there's little difference between the republicans and the democrats.
They're both American.

Both parties are a threat to world peace and the climate crisis.
Biden was utterly hopeless. The Democrats were a disaster during this election.

At least Trump is a bit funny. He's got a sense of humour about America destroying the world.

Well possibly, but the man he appointed Vice President called him a nazi so he's hardly new to getting over past slurs.

I agree. He will get over it.

Trump is the anti-woke vote. The anti establishment vote. The anti Obama style war mongering hyper capitalism vote.

I am actually perfectly comfortable that Trump won. The downside is minimal compared with the alternative, being the Democrats.

You don't think Trump is a capitalist?

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 07/11/2024 23:58

Depending on OP's ethnicity, religion, names on passport and so on, she might be affected if there's a new travel ban; or her friends, family, or global work partners might be.

user1467300911 · 08/11/2024 00:07

You are most definitely not alone - millions of us think trump is a wanker.

The best way forward is to keep on creating the world we want. So chin up.

I'm no fan of Keir Starmer but as the Prime Minister he has to be seen to be professional and keep relations with other country's political leaders as smooth as possible, what else could he have done but Congratulate Trump?( even if its through gritted teeth.)

Yes, agree, and whoever was our PM would do the same.

Vaxtable · 08/11/2024 01:30

RingoJuice · 07/11/2024 08:39

The American election does not personally affect you (assuming you are British). Don’t you have more important things to worry about in Britain?

So what about him looking to come out of Ukraine? But Sir Keir has said we will continue to support, that will affect us

what about the fact he is talking of import taxes on anything imported into the US that will affect us all

who knows what else will be affected now

Trump was voted in once before and the world didn't spin off its axis nor did the universe implode. You'll be okay hun.

Edited

I seem to recall Trump bring quite good for world politi s.I mean I wouldn't want to be in the same room as the guy, but his personal life is less important .

GreengrassofW · 07/11/2024 09:08

@T4phage Yes this. The full blown narcissist leader with childish traits, voted for by other childlike & developmentally stunted adult children who think he's cool. Absolutely terrifying.

People vote with their wallets 99% of the time.

Mlanket · 08/11/2024 05:39

You can’t label millions of people developmentally stunned 🙄

Starmer congratulating above mentioned abuser

You seriously don’t understand why Starmer congratulated him?!

Mlanket · 08/11/2024 05:43

in addition it is quite understandable to empathise with women and minorities who will also suffer as a result of his policies.

And yet plenty of women & minorities voted for him….

I think a lot of people don’t understand politics tbh. @friendlycat far too sensible!

Riapia · 08/11/2024 05:55

Nigel likes him.
😉😁😁.

Seymour5 · 08/11/2024 06:28

We could be living in Iran! Love or hate Trump, there are lots of reasons why he’s won.

toastandtwo · 08/11/2024 06:46

I feel very despondent indeed about the climate. But I felt that way a few days ago, too.

As for the people who voted for him - I have family members who voted for him. I couldn’t disagree with them more about their politics but I can understand why they voted for him. These are extremely hard working, community focused, kind (believe it or not) people who will never vote for the party that represents big government.

user1467300911 · 08/11/2024 08:09

I wouldn’t call trump voters developmentally stunted but some people’s understanding of the world is rather superficial. They think that they are voting in their own interests by voting for Trump, which in the short term they possibly are.

But climate change will wreak devastation on communities and the global food system. Sticking our collective heads in the sand simply won’t work. Atmospheric physics doesn’t work that way.

Mlanket · 08/11/2024 10:42

the vast majority of people vote for themselves

Circumferences · 08/11/2024 10:47

You don't think Trump is a capitalist?

The extreme, hyper, ultra, American-capitalism that is poisoning the world has infected the Democrats to a far greater extent than it has the republican party under Trump.

Of course Trump is a capitalist. He's American!

Dotjones · 08/11/2024 11:29

The OP's position is quite interesting on the level of interpreting human behaviour. Without realising it, the OP is displaying the exact same behaviour as those who she thinks behaved wrongly by voting for Trump.

People generally vote for whoever they think will give the best (or least bad) outcome for them personally. What is important to a person of course varies by the individual, be it money, climate change, world war 3, health or education. People voted for Trump because they think he will be best/least bad for their preferred vision of the future.

The OP is looking at it from the same position - she believes people should have voted for someone different, someone who she believes would be more likely to pursue the kind of policies she herself believes are good.

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 08/11/2024 11:44

Oh give it a rest the sky is not going to fall.

CortieTat · 08/11/2024 11:50

He was a president before and his presidency was quite boring and restrained, despite everyone’s concerns that he was going to cause a nuclear war and we all ended up in Vault 13.

I am in mainland Europe and very concerned for Ukraine. However, I also understand that making a total mess and then expecting another country to pay for it is extremely irresponsible and unreasonable and yes I am thinking about Germany and their stupid and shortsighted policy towards Russia.

I’m afraid you have two choices.

Rail against it, or lean in to it.

Many things you have little influence over, so what to do.

That's simply not true on so many levels, new trade agreements will impact every one of us.
I work in a profession sensitive to geopolitics, like many of us. It will have a direct impact on my business, as has all the geopolitical instability.

AccidentalTourism · 08/11/2024 18:01

The rise of fascism around the world should frighten and horrify us. ^

If you're not bothered,^ you're unaware of its dangers.
