To think pet owners should stop calling themselves “dog mums” and “cat dads?”

It just feels a bit much when people treat their pets as if they’re children. AIBU to think this trend has gone a bit too far?

It’s weird. Everyone I know who worships their pet like a child is a pretty bitter and disgruntled person.
Spending money on a cat advent and a Xmas eve box is obscene.

Obscene? You do know they just have treats in them. It’s just a bit of fun. I also buy her normal packs of dreamies, is that obscene too?

Prescottdanni123 · 06/11/2024 22:00

How is it bothering you, OP? I think anti dog/cat people on here who have never owned an animal in their lives should stop telling owners what they should or should not do.

Very few pet owners actually see an animal as being the same thing as a human child. It's daft how many people on here take terms like 'dog mum' and 'furbaby' so literally and get so affronted by it.

I would suggest there’s a better way to spaff a spare 50 quid at Xmas such as a food bank or children’s charity. The cat really doesn’t give a toss about being photographed with dreamies and Santa hat for FB.

£50? 🤣 My cats advent calendar filled with treats cost £3!

Whereas you sound like a bundle of joy!
My pet is a pet and has never had an advent calendar or Christmas Eve box - now I feel bad. Is he missing out? 😉
p.s. I don’t care how other people spend / waste their money. It’s good for the economy for them to be spending. You seem envious that some people are lucky enough to have money to burn on crap like that!

Do you actually hear yourself.

Why don't you ask someone who has their dog in a pushchair in a shop then?
But yes, ignore the people who are telling you the valid reasons that dogs are in pushchairs to begin with.

People spend all sorts of money on utterly wasteful stuff. You sound like you’re very jealous of those with money. What a waste of energy.

This. Especially when it is not actually affecting anyone else.
I did have to laugh at the PP saying that owners must use their first name, not mum/dad. And they have the audacity to call pet owners batshit.

But their not valid and completely contradict each other. First it's because it's the only way to get a dog out who is disabled to play at the park. Now it's to walk them around shops. I wouldn't even take an able dog shopping as it's a dog not a child. Dogs can stay at home for a few hours while you go shopping you don't need to take it everywhere, it's not a baby.

How do you know they weren’t at the vet and popped into Tesco for milk? Why do you even care?

Sincerely,

Did you not read the bit where I said that people combine a walk and shopping? Walk the dog, and pick up a paper on the way home. My grandad used to do the same, as his own mobility wasn't great so it saved him two trips out.

And if you are on holiday, then you have to take your dog into shops etc because you are not allowed to leave them in holiday accommodation alone.

Most do

Because the dog is not the offspring of your husband.

Yes, the male owner's first name would be preferable for philosophical reasons.

If the clear distinction is maintained, it is easier for people to stop dressing dogs in silly clothing or feeding them ice cream or other unsuitable diets or, more importantly, failing to train them in appropriate behaviour around other people in case their feelings were hurt or the owners felt they were being mean to their furbaby by consistently keeping them under control.

The dog's need for a pack leader is also satisfied by the clear line. Dogs appreciate a clear hierarchy, whether that means they are fed after the family has eaten or they don't get to lounge on the couch or they are trained to obey verbal commands instantly. They are confused by a democracy and by unearned privilege. Treating them as if they were anything but dogs fills a human need but not a dog's. It's not kind.

I’m a dog mum. My DH is ‘dad’. He’s the pack leader.

Wr also have adult children. Of course we really love our children. Our furry friends are also close family members so whilst we didn’t conceive them we care for them, feed them, bathe and walk them, take them on days out. They even have doggy ice cream and sometimes I bake cat/dog friendly nibbles which are nutritious (recipes issued by vets). I’m not quite sure why that’s harming you so much? I shall continue as I was. The dog and the cat both seem to be living their best lives and bring a huge amount of joy to ours.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/11/2024 22:12

@camelfinger

My last dog lived until she was 17. I called her 'baby' all her life and loved her with all my heart for every second. She's been gone for years now but I still love her to bits.

But you can't take dogs in Tesco so you do have to either go home first and go back out or get milk delivered. Supermarkets aren't going to change their rules because some people think their dogs are babies

Same could be said for the ridiculous nonsense some parents do such as North Pole breakfasts and Christmas Eve boxes for their kids. Human children don't need the amount of instagram driven crap that parents spaff money on when food banks exist....

Then you can't go shopping. If you choose to have a pet you have to make sacrifices and can't expect the world to change for you and your dog. And it's not walking the dog if it's in a pushchair

You’re being ridiculously pedantic. I was using Tesco as an example. Imagine you’re taking your elderly dog to the vet in a dog pram and on the way home, you walk past <insert name of one of the MANY stores that does allow dogs> and think “oh I might as well get X while I’m passing”.

I googled some examples for you - https://ukpetguide.com/dog-friendly-shops-in-the-uk/

Why is this a hill you wish to die on btw? I don’t have any animosity towards dog owners who use dog prams. In no way does it affect me if a dog in a pram is in a shop that permits dogs anyway.

If a shop allows dogs, then the person taking their dog in is doing nothing wrong.

Yes, some people are entitled and try to push their luck. But they are not as entitled as you and your views on dog owners who are doing nothing wrong.

And again, the dog in the pushchair is getting mental stimulation which is vital.

I'm not interested in shops that let dogs in. I'm interested in why so many people talk about dogs and cats like their babies. Push them around in pushchairs and insist on taking them everywhere with them. Their not babies they can be left for a few hours. You don't need to take them into shops. This is not fun for dogs this is completely selfish owners putting themselves first.

We're not equal to cats and dogs. Babies and children cannot be compared to animals.

Anthropomorphism is part of a pernicious and extremely corrosive anti-child element in our culture that needs to be exposed and analysed.

Humans have been anthropomorphising animals for millennia. Aesop's fables, anyone?

Taking a dog in a pushchair around shops is not for the dogs benefit

Prescottdanni123 · 06/11/2024 22:25

@Differentstarts

Do you honestly think that dog owners who take dogs out in pushchairs do so because they want to treat it like a human toddler? In 99% of cases, this couldn't be further than the truth.
