To think pet owners should stop calling themselves “dog mums” and “cat dads?”

It just feels a bit much when people treat their pets as if they’re children. AIBU to think this trend has gone a bit too far?

I find it a bit cringe ( and I’m a bit of a mad dog lady) but really it harms no one so why can’t you just leave people be?

TTPDTS · 06/11/2024 19:36

But I literally birthed my cats? They look just like me?

My dog is my furry child, i love her to bits and she always happy to see me (unlike my teens 🤣) and I am her mama.
it bothers you?
i couldnt care less what you think @TheDeftAquaViewer because it does make me very very happy indeed

I find it incredibly sad to be honest

Why dog owners are blissfully happy, couldn’t give a shit and not made to feel sad by expressions on the internet.

How does it affect you?

TheFlis · 06/11/2024 19:37

I am blissfully childfree, DH and I never wanted kids even a little bit. I never had a single maternal instinct. But my little dog is 100% my baby and I don’t give a shit if anyone disapproves. Neither does he!

Whatafustercluck · 06/11/2024 19:38

To some people, who either cannot have children or do not want them, then they are their babies. Having my own children (and cats) then obviously I know what you mean and I don't treat my cats as equal to my children. But they are part of our family. To many people, their pets are everything, and they stop them being lonely. I think a bond like that is lovely for them. They can call themselves whatever they want.

Floralnomad · 06/11/2024 19:39

How exactly does it affect you if someone calls themselves their dogs mum - it doesn’t so leave people alone .

shellyleppard · 06/11/2024 19:39

I had fertility problems for years, my cats were my family. . When I had my sons i still treated them the same. My sons have grown up with cats all their lives (sons now 19 and 16).

Opentooffers · 06/11/2024 19:40

There's a lot of similarity to having a dog to having a child. Also, Ive heard the most intelligent dog has the brains of a 3 year old at best. It's a lot like living with another child, and the resposibility. Then there's the love, they are family. Yea, if not a pet owner you wouldn't get it.

CleanShirt · 06/11/2024 19:41

AI is really AI'ing today.

Dearg · 06/11/2024 19:42

I resisted being knows as Deargdog’s mum, but it just happened. Trainer, Vet etc all call me that. But if you ask him to find me he knows me as Dearg, not mum.

That said, I like to refer to my SIL as Auntie, because it really pisses her off. Win-win

LouH5 · 06/11/2024 19:42

I call myself a Meowmie to my cat, is that a problem for you as well?

pyjamalife · 06/11/2024 19:42

Nope. Got a dog and two kids, all 5 and under.

They're all my babies and I'm mum to all three.

bombastix · 06/11/2024 19:43

Well yes it’s ridiculous. Pets don’t need parents.

Vitriolinsanity · 06/11/2024 19:44

The needle on my GiveAShitometer reads zero.

That said, don't get me started on Work Mum and Work Dad.

SpunkyKoala · 06/11/2024 19:44

I honestly couldn’t care less what people think I’ll do what makes me happy

SpunkyKoala · 06/11/2024 19:45

My dog also thinks his name is chuchie face

EarthlyNightshade · 06/11/2024 19:46

OP, what are you planning to do with all these answers?

fraya123 · 06/11/2024 19:46

I call my cats my fur-babies

Love it

Edingril · 06/11/2024 19:48

I think they need to keep doing just to give people something to start a thread on here, because if that is the most important thing to worry about in life it is pretty good

MumOfOneAllAlone · 06/11/2024 19:48

Doesn't bother me but i guess it is a bit weird

Also, as I have a dd, I do refer to myself as mummy so that my dd hears it and hopefully picks it up

I don't like it when people act as though pets are the same as children though 😕. Also, there seems to be a trend with pet parents hating fireworks and hoping they get banned. As a firework lover, I hate it x

That's brilliant!

I'm a Cat Mum and proud.

Dartmoorcheffy · 06/11/2024 19:49

I couldn't have children . My dogs are my babies and I don't give a toss what other people think.
