To think pet owners should stop calling themselves “dog mums” and “cat dads?”

It just feels a bit much when people treat their pets as if they’re children. AIBU to think this trend has gone a bit too far?

@LouH5 similar in our house with our beautiful dog!

And we sign his name in greeting cards then put a drawing of a paw print next to it.

I've got a photo of my boy engraved with his name near the kitchen sink right with special pics of dh and the kids.

And my boy will be getting his own dog treat advent calendar at Christmas. I've already bought and wrapped him a gift too.

Grin

Yesss I always do this with greeting cards too! A kiss under mine and my boyfriends name, and a little paw print under her name 🖤

She also gets an advent calendar and Christmas Eve box too 🤣

@EmpressaurusDelleGatte that's brilliant!

P1550FF · 06/11/2024 21:25

Suppose you lot think dressing baby orangutans up in baby grows and dresses and taking photos of them is sweet and innocent too? Sick society.

How do you plan on exposing it?

@LouH5 she's a lucky cat. Smile

Comedycook · 06/11/2024 21:22

No they don't. You buy things and pretend they are doing it.

<sigh>.

Yes. I know. And it makes us happy, and the pets all get something they enjoy eating or playing with.

Do you have no sense of fun, @Comedycook? Do you never pretend anything for your own amusement, even though you know it’s not actually real?

Great idea! Give us some more

ihavebecomecomfortablynumb · 06/11/2024 21:27

I don’t want my dog to know that he’s adopted. He was only two months old when I got him so I’m fairly confident that I’ve got away with maintaining the illusion that he’s my biological dog. 😜

Bollocks.
And I wouldn’t dream of trying to dress my cat up in anything, she’d be thoroughly unimpressed.

I mean it’s not something I’ve ever thought about but no, I don’t think that sounds sweet and innocent.

However I do call my cat my baby.

I guess those two things don’t necessarily go hand in hand 🤷🏻‍♀️

Babysharkdododododooo · 06/11/2024 21:30

“Fur baby” and “cat mum” make me want to vomit. As does “ddog”etc

Catsmere · 06/11/2024 21:31

BobbyBiscuits · 06/11/2024 19:35

I don't think many people do call themselves that Irl in day to day parlance. Maybe on pet specific threads, posts about their animals on sm etc.
I do call my cats my 'babies' privately among my family, but only to them in the home. I whisper in their ears about how they are my beautiful babies etc. And they purr and love it!
I do see them as the closest thing to having a child as I know I won't ever have one. It's not harmful really as long as the person isn't neglectful to their real children or human relationships and responsibilities.

That's my experience, too. I say "hello babies" to my cats when I get home, I might refer to them as "the babies" when talking about them with friends, but it's mostly an online thing on pet forums.

Of all the twee or cutesy terms around now, the types OP is complaining about are the least annoying as far as I'm concerned.

@TheDeftAquaViewer

I agree. It really grates on me.

It's not fair to animals to disregard their nature and treat them as if they were some kind of really easily amused human. People who do this are projecting their own needs onto animals.

And it's disrespectful to people. We are a separate species.

I do not consider myself a parent to my dog but this post made me laugh with the seriousness of a not serious situation.

My dog has no understanding of what I mean whether I call him “my dog” or “my smooshy face farty pants pet”. He has no concept of “separate species”. He barely understands anything further than basic commands. I doubt he feels disrespect. 😂😂😂😂

I got my goldfish a nice knitted bonnet and he can say “mummy” now - so proud! 🥹

Because the dog is not the offspring of your husband.

Yes, the male owner's first name would be preferable for philosophical reasons.

If the clear distinction is maintained, it is easier for people to stop dressing dogs in silly clothing or feeding them ice cream or other unsuitable diets or, more importantly, failing to train them in appropriate behaviour around other people in case their feelings were hurt or the owners felt they were being mean to their furbaby by consistently keeping them under control.

The dog's need for a pack leader is also satisfied by the clear line. Dogs appreciate a clear hierarchy, whether that means they are fed after the family has eaten or they don't get to lounge on the couch or they are trained to obey verbal commands instantly. They are confused by a democracy and by unearned privilege. Treating them as if they were anything but dogs fills a human need but not a dog's. It's not kind.

Ok, you must be taking the piss now. Male owner's first name? That has to be satire.

My dog wears PJs (she is a greyhound and has less body at than a worm), and she enjoys the occasional doggy ice cream in the summer. You might be dismayed to find out that I do not literally consider her to be human, and she is actually well trained.

Treating my dog well, and referring to myself as her mum, is not the humankind ending nonsense you think it is.

Hahaha yes, I don’t really think my cat is arsed about me “disregarding her nature” when I call her my beautiful baby girl, or precious princess!

I dislike it, largely because of the bad attitude of an ex-colleague who seemed to expect more consideration of her "dog-child" than my actual child.

Yeah I care more about my pet than my coworker's child.

I have seen that happen, and it is because the person with a child is taking the piss with going early, wanting Xmas off as a priority over everyone else, expecting their childfree colleagues to accommodate their reproductive choices.

pernice · 06/11/2024 21:40

I hope you don't expect your coworker to care more about your pet than their own child, the way my coworker did.
