To think pet owners should stop calling themselves “dog mums” and “cat dads?”

It just feels a bit much when people treat their pets as if they’re children. AIBU to think this trend has gone a bit too far?

I feel I'm the dog's mum and DH is her dad but I would never say so out loud if anyone was listening. I was very embarrassed when I told Ddog she is the world's best doggie the other day and a passer-by heard me.

Don't be embarrassed. I love it when I overhear the private interactions between owner and pet.
Seeing a grown man just stop with his dog to give them head kisses and say how much they love them - it makes my heart melt.
And when someone passes me and my hound with their reactive pooch, and they tell their dog "see, why can't you be nice like that dog?". It always makes me smile.

Embrace it - mine have lots of nicknames, they know them all, and that’s before the songs I sing (you know the random ones you make up, about big paws that smell like basmati, or the beautiful eyes that no one can despise…. Or the song when I’m tucking the cat in at night (which varies but always starts off with ‘orange girl kitty burrito’). Appreciate it may sound mental but the girls seem happy. I did the same when my son was young, make up silly songs.

With so much heartache in the world I don’t see why people can’t just be more generally tolerant of others. My silly songs aren’t hurting anyone. Nor is my dog wearing a snug fleece to keep her warm when it’s chilly and we’re at the park (only mention that as some PP have mentioned pets wearing ‘clothes’).

Buggy's for dogs is my ultimate "pet" hate.

My late dog had a wheelchair. He loved it and everyone around us loved seeing him in it!

Freeyourminds · 07/11/2024 19:08

Yes ignore the pet haters, they just love a good moan.

Many dog owners are utter idiots.

Hooman for human and hoomam and hoodad for the parents. Just no.

It's Hoomin you idiot!

It is total cringe, and I absolutely judge. They are a different species to us, and not our children. People can be so pathetic.

"Cringe" is a verb not a nown and I absolutely judge. People who cannot use grammar effectively should not be judging what other people say/ call things. People can be so pathetic.

Prescottdanni123 · 07/11/2024 20:10

@Pusheen467

i allow my dog to scratch, dig and scent mark, as do the vast majority of dog owners. I have my dogs spayed because I do not want to partake in what you call you call the reproductive slavery of another female 🙄 and because it removes their chances of getting ovarian and womb cancer and decreases the chances of them getting other types of cancers.

Get off your high horse. You don't care about animals, you just don't want anyone else yo own them because you don't like them so you make up ridiculous arguments to try to make out it is morally wrong.

rayofsunshine86 · 07/11/2024 20:26

In my mind, calling yourself a cat or dog mum is akin to baby-talk, which I find embarrassing for anyone over the age of 4. I can't stand social media accounts for cats or dogs either.

Why would you be embarrassed by what someone else says? Do you embarrass easily?

They have no life.

7ft1garysson · 07/11/2024 20:49

I think it’s a bit weird, but then who am I to say what makes people feel happy.

Macaroni46 · 07/11/2024 20:58

Sad. Sad for you to think so much about it.

I am blissfully childfree, DH and I never wanted kids even a little bit. I never had a single maternal instinct. But my little dog is 100% my baby and I don’t give a shit if anyone disapproves. Neither does he!

How much was your “baby”? 300 quid? When you replace him (as everyone does with their “babies”) wonder if that will go up with inflation?

Since we’re sharing, these are the things that make me cringe:

People who do up the top button on polo shirts. I don’t know why it looks weird, it just does.

The use of hubby, hun or lol.

Phrases like ‘Just my two cents’ / ‘Just my opinion’, especially if ending in exclamation marks.

Do I think anyone should have to stop doing those because I object to them?

Of course not.

A pet is never replaced.

You might have a new one, but it’s but a replacement.

If you don’t understand this, then I feel sorry for you.

You have never had a dog or other pet in your life, have you?

I can tell, because anyone who has had a beloved pet has neverput a monetary value on their pet's life.

Catsmere · 07/11/2024 21:23

Have we a PETA supporter on the thread? No pets! No spaying (and presumably neutering)! Unnatural!

Never mind several thousands of years of domestication that have removed dogs from their wolf ancestors, or that they, and cats, initially self-domesticated by choosing to live alongside humans.

And now we have animals being reduced to monetary value, presumably by someone who's never loved one and can't grasp the concept of affection existing between species.

AlwaysGinPlease · 07/11/2024 21:23

Oh @Housebuyingfamily what a foolish comment 🤣

Macaroni46 · 07/11/2024 21:34

@YeOldeGreyhound

Nothing sad about it. I barely think about it all. But I do find it pathetic.

TortillasAndSalsa · 07/11/2024 21:34

I have 2 dc and 2 dogs. I love my dc unconditionally they are my kids. However I also love my dogs as they are my dogs, said dogs are better behaved at times too (toddler dc is in his murderous scream era and older dc is 8 going on 18😂

MsRosewater · 07/11/2024 21:38

I frequently say things like "down DDaughter" or " stop DDaughter" rather than DDog

And DDaughter refers to her dog brother so YANU

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 07/11/2024 22:09

I think I’m going to hide this thread now. It’s going round in circles & I’m tired of defending something that doesn’t need to be defended, when I could be playing with my cat.

Pets are prevented from behaving in natural ways - no scratching, digging, marking etc. We even decide if they get to keep their sex organs or not. Plus, anyone buying from a breeder is funding the reproductuve slavery of another female.

I rescue female guinea pigs who have been used as brood sows, (basically sexual slavery) for big pet shops like pets at home. Is heart breaking what goes on at guinea pig mills.
