To wear this to my graduation?

I'm nearly 25, my university graduation is coming up (midwifery).

I really like this dress, but three separate people (friends and family) have said the plunge and cut-out bits are too much for a graduation.

Is there much skin?

To wear this to my graduation?

Goodness me, there are some tedious, joyless sheep on this thread!

Wear what you like, although obviously consider how your gown and mortarboard will affect/interact with it.

People who are saying "you are not supposed to graduate as yourself" are barmy. Who are you supposed to graduate as ?

Actually, they've changed hoods - I advised my daughter in this vein ( though buttons don't help a little with women's clothes so I explained how to use safety pins on the how. Itself) but turns out hoods now Velcro to gowns. May not be true everywhere I guess.

I had a Velcro hood. Even with Velcro it will strangle you.

DaisychainXYZ · 06/11/2024 09:58

Choose something classic , black and white or match the colours to that on the gown.

The velcro is amazing but it's not on all of them unfortunately. I have the velcro because of the university I graduated from, but my female colleagues who graduated from the university we work at spend the day fighting with safety pins.

Hoods will depend on which g hiring company they use

So check the graduation links to supplier and look at their clothing advice regarding how the hoods work

All mine recently were hooks, no Velcro.

It won’t be very comfortable. The gown will keep sliding off. It also looks very summery and you will be freezing.

I agree. I just don't think it is very practical.

@levernopor You will need some way of fixing the hood to the front of your dress, and you won't be very warm.

Are there any dress code guidelines on the university website?

And congratulations Flowers

Cakeandcardio · 06/11/2024 10:13

Is there no dress code for your graduation? I was told black skirt / dress / trousers and white or black top. Appreciate this might not happen these days.

burnoutbabe · 06/11/2024 09:52

They were my fellow students. I am sure they judged me too.

If you see someone walking across the stage, frantically trying to keep their deep splitted dress from unwrapping and showing their pants, would you not think -that was a bad choice for this sort of event? And recommend to others not to wear items that may embarrass them when walking across a stage.

But that's not what the bit I quoted says

You talk about it being depressing.

Allfur · 06/11/2024 10:48

Looks lovely

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 06/11/2024 10:50

Just done a quick Google on Graduations from a couple of universities and a lot of women wear dresses and not business attire. The ones graduating from a Business School, seem to be in more formal clothes but they're doing MBA's and proper professional programmes so are some what older.

RedHelenB · 06/11/2024 10:50

It's your graduation, there were a variety of dresses amd cleavage/kegs on show at dcs

user2848502016 · 06/11/2024 10:51

It's not that it's too revealing, it's that it's going to be very difficult to attach your hood to that.
A shirt or top with buttons is much easier!

No strict dress code where I work. Anything goes it seems, the guys are usually in suits and ties, the women dressed as if for a wedding or night out.

Some universities do the hooding on the stage so velcro wouldn't work so well here.

There is certainly much flesh on show and no need for a business dress but there's a lot in between this and beach dresses.

Something a bit structured is better so it holds in place.

For me the Nigerian students usually win my imaginary best dressed. They wear beautifully fitted and vivid dresses but the wax print style fabric holds in place perfectly.

If it's a shift style dress with another layer you'd get away with it but the very floaty kind seem top of the list for most fought with.

@BitOutOfPracticeI can't remove this tag so apologies it's not meant to be here but refuses to delete

PurpleChrayn · 06/11/2024 11:34

It's lovely but not for a graduation.

Tenerifesun14 · 06/11/2024 11:37

Omg go for it!! It's a gorgeous dress, and be individual!!! Be you!! Lifes too short, this is YOUR graduation.

Buy the dress... you'll look stunning xxx

I graduated a couple of weeks ago and tbh people wore all sorts.

The robe and hood cover a lot anyway but I would say if you have something that plunges too far the front of the hood might sit weirdly as you don't have anything to button or pin it to. We didn't have to attach ours but mine didn't sit very well at all until I pinned it onto my dress.

I absolutely agree. People tend to wear all sorts! I think ot would make a great holiday dress OP.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 06/11/2024 01:57

If you'll be wearing a gown, that won't work at all. You need to able to attach the front of the gown and hood (usually to a button), and for the outfit to take the weight without riding up. And you may have specified colours you need to stick to.

@levernopor I agree with this post. I recall being so paranoid that my gown would slip and that id trip up on it going up the steps in front of hundreds of people and then die from actual shame and I was wearing a suit etc, so it was able to be attached properly, if I'd been wearing something less secure I don't think I'd have been able to think of anything else at all 😁 also, depending on where you are graduating it might not be warm enough (I graduated in a big, cold cathedral at this time of year too).
Maybe, if you have anything arranged for after the ceremony you could change into it then?

BitOutOfPractice · 06/11/2024 11:42

@HowYouSpellingThat10 no problem. I’ve sent you a tag back now! We could be at this all day! 😂

mondaytosunday · 06/11/2024 11:54

It is rather low cut but I saw a woman on TV and she wore a selection of tube top things to cover her cleavage without interfering with the straps.

I wore a black dress with a neckline up to my collarbone, with a velcro hood, and the whole thing drove me absolutely crazy. It doesn't really make a difference that the hood has velcro because it only attaches to the gown, and the gown itself slips all over the place. The hood was cutting into my neck and falling off my shoulders at the same time. Pretty much all I could think about as I stood in the queue to cross the stage was whether it was going to slip again. Well, that and falling over Grin. My friends and I noted that the men didn't seem to have this problem and concluded it was yet another thing designed with a man's body in mind.

hadenoughofplayinggames · 06/11/2024 12:04

A dress with a high neck would look better under the gown. A gap of skin between the dress and the stole/sash doesn’t look good in photos.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 06/11/2024 13:02

Beautiful dress. And far too nice to cover with a black gown.
Save it for a party.
And congratulations on your qualification. ( a job I could never do so my hat’s off to you)

Moveoverdarlin · 06/11/2024 14:32

It couldn’t look less like the type of dress you’d wear for a graduation.

Searchingforthelight · 06/11/2024 14:34

It looks fantastic - if you like it, wear it!!
