To be worried my air fryer may be spying on me?

This is all over the news today.

Air fryers spying on people.

I am seriously worried about this and may throw or give away my air fryer. It's ridiculous that our household appliances can now spy on us.

Which? warns some air fryers are secretly spying on you

It was discovered that some air fryers transmitted personal data to servers located in China

This thread probably wasn’t the best place for this ad 😂

Mine would have no hope, I only plug it in if I use it & it only gets used twice a week, if you had said the microwave then I would have been worried.

I'm not having a 'smart home' until it all comes in a single package that does everything. Maybe like the domestic robots in Humans (I might even pay the extra for sex skills, heh). There's extremely limited benefit to a 'smart' air fryer when you still have to put the food in, interrupt cooking to turn/shake the food, take it out and add other stuff to make a meal, then clean it. Same with every device that needs filling, feeding, emptying and cleaning! They all beep and sing when they want attention now, anyway, and they all have timers.

I'm holding out for something far more intelligent, capable and personable than a phone app 🙂

MissMoan · 06/11/2024 02:23

I don't trust those smart mirrors. What are they for?

Mudflaps · 06/11/2024 03:35

I'm currently shopping g for a new fridge freezer, I want one that is plumbed to dispense ice and chilled water, both to be available without opening the door, easy enough you'd expect but it's not really when you look into reliability etc. Any ways one salesman did his absolute best to get me to buy a fridge freezer with a built in 'Ipad' on the door (he called it an IPad but it's a Samsung appliance, some of the reasons he gave for buying it included 'you can see who's at your door, leave shopping lists for each other, listen to spotify, watch netflix, listen to the radio, read recipes and it'll entertain the kids' I'd love to know who buys these things based on recommendations like that. I have decided to buy a Samsung but not that one!!

But why does an air fryer need an app?

And if any item in my home wanted to know my gender, I’d be very disappointed in it.

It’s plotting to creep into your bedroom during the night, and shag you.
😉😁😁.

20 years ago you'd have been sectioned if you told a doctor that you thought your toaster was eavesdropping on your conversation. Now it is reality. Technology has gone too far IMO.

Well if you believe it that is

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/11/2024 04:25

Is this real? Who on earth has an air fryer that links to their phone.

The same reason I have a kettle that connects to my phone.

And the reason is..... hmmmmmm, I'll get back to you on that.

Are you sure your kettle’s not spying on you?

I am so over my appliances discussing me behind my back and ganging up on me.

My “smart” washer dryer was so smart that domestic and general insurance tried many times to fix it, in the end they said it had a bad attitude and scrapped it.
One engineer said with the right knowledge and application that it could be productive but we deduced it was just plain lazy!

I would be hurt if I discovered my air fryer to be a gossiping bully as we’ve been there for each other through thick and thin. When Dp discussed getting a better model in Black Friday sales I talked Betty (the air fryer) up and tried to help him see her best points.

If that little bitch is spying on me then I’ll rehome her, might take her to known criminals houses so she can sing like a canary like undercover law enforcement.

We will hopefully catch some baddies whilst enjoying a chicken on a rotisserie, not finger licking good in our house! It’s finger pointing good.

Farmgoose · 06/11/2024 05:36

Anyone else completely put off by Smart capability though? I bought a washing machine recently and the spec I chose from AO didn’t have a version without it. It’s just one more pointless feature with the potential to go wrong.
We all just want washing machines with start buttons and maybe 3 options don’t we? Mine has about 240 possible combines and so can’t be bothered to read what they might do. I press the picture with the t shirt on. What does the pair of leaves and the puff of wind button do?

But it's not your airfryer that's listening it's the app on your phone. Why an airfryer needs an app I don't know but just make sure you don't have an app if there's one for your airfryer.

Are you also thinking about getting rid of your mobile phone too for all the listening it does??

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/11/2024 08:03

Now you mention it, he's a dodgy looking little bugger. 🤔

Why would an air fryer be connected to the WiFi?

I just turn the dial to how many minutes I want, what would the internet be needed for?

I always unplug it when not in use anyway.

Bet there are smart ones, there's smart everything now

fishingfor · 06/11/2024 13:19

I'm so worried. The Chinese might now know that I had chips for dinner last night. What should I do?

OonaStubbs · 07/11/2024 01:51

I think there's a market for now basic devices with no "smart" capabilities. Just mechanical devices with no electronics. You switch them on, they do what they do and nothing more. Plenty of people don't need or want anything more.

That’s all any of my devices do. And it’s all I need.

Kitchens are a bit of a red herring.

A quick google just showed that showers & toilets can now come with apps.

I’m sure 99% of devices or appliances don’t need smart intervention. A smart air fryer is just crazy, it’s not as if you need to turn it on while you’re at work. I don’t even understand where the smartness comes into play with that particular appliance.

Apart from my phone nothing I have is ‘smart’.(including myself at times lol).
