This is all over the news today.

Air fryers spying on people.

I am seriously worried about this and may throw or give away my air fryer. It's ridiculous that our household appliances can now spy on us.

Which? warns some air fryers are secretly spying on you

It was discovered that some air fryers transmitted personal data to servers located in China

Mine can try - there is no internet coverage in my kitchen. I'm perfectly happy with dumb appliances!

QuestionableMouse · 05/11/2024 19:50

Do you have the ones listed? Just don't use the app and unplug it once you're done using it.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 05/11/2024 19:51

What does an air fryer need an app for?

WonderingWanda · 05/11/2024 20:15

Is this real? Who on earth has an air fryer that links to their phone. All.you do is switch them off. Not sure what benefit knowing where the air fryer is geographically will to be to China anyway. Surely the company knows how many of its air fryers have been sold in the UK market.

Irridescantshimmmer · 05/11/2024 20:16

Disable all the settings for this air fryer on your device/ phone then delete the app.

whirlyhead · 05/11/2024 20:22

It’s not just our appliances.

my cats are definitely spying on us, I just haven’t figured out who they’re secretly reporting to yet. Probably the RSPCA after I dared trying to feed them with food from Lidl.

seriously, who cares!!

Edingril · 05/11/2024 20:24

My fridge looked at me shifty this morning I think it is jealous of the chat I had with washing machine

OonaStubbs · 05/11/2024 20:26

20 years ago you'd have been sectioned if you told a doctor that you thought your toaster was eavesdropping on your conversation. Now it is reality. Technology has gone too far IMO.

It's the Apps

"The analysis found all three products tested – the Aigostar, Xiaomi Mi Smart, and Cosori CAF-LI401S – pinpointed their customers' location data and requested audio recording permissions on the user's phone. The Xiaomi app linked to its air fryer was connected to Facebook, Pangle, and Tencent trackers, varying based on user location; meanwhile, the Aigostar air fryer requested the user's gender and date of birth when creating an account,"

It's surprising what permissions an app asks for when you download it - and why would your Air Fryer app need permission for your location and to access void recordings.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 05/11/2024 20:58

But why does an air fryer need an app?

And if any item in my home wanted to know my gender, I’d be very disappointed in it.

Makingchocolatecake · 05/11/2024 21:54

Just switch it off when you aren't using it or don't let it connect to the wifi

Yes, if you were suspicious that you were being monitored by an electronic decice, a GP would think you were off your rocker.

The GP now, is too scared to call you anything that may offend sex wise, yet would possibly record you as a racist.

🙄

What critical intel from your kitchen are you concerned about China finding out about?

OonaStubbs, aged 37 from Scunthorpe, burnt her fries at 18:00 hours on 5th November?

Do we suspect that China have armies of workers listening to hours upon hours of recordings from people kitchens on a daily basis?

Why would an air fryer be connected to the WiFi?

I just turn the dial to how many minutes I want, what would the internet be needed for?

I always unplug it when not in use anyway.

Because these days, there is a percentage of people who will pay a lot more for a product if it has an app, even if that app might appear to be totally useless to you and me.

Our dishwasher has an app, and that even works with OK Google. So I can say "OK Google, put the dishwasher on". It works great! Well, of course, I have to get up to put a tablet in it and close the door, but if for some reason I couldn't remember where the Start button is, it would be a lifesaver.

It's a bit more than that.

Apps do ask for more permissions than they need to - and what data are they harvesting and why - and where is it going...

Clickbait!
Every app under the sun requests the same permissions. It's not the air fryer listening to you - it's your phone!
I also just think - unless you're a celebrity or a politician, there is literally nothing interesting about your average Joe for someone to want to actively listen to your conversations. They just want to advertise to you, which is just the world we live in.

Mine isn't electronic, just knobs which I turn that go click click click.

I have many a row with Google and Alexa when I request music and they go on and off during the song!
