Women’s loo queues- what’s going on??

SanctusInDistress · 05/11/2024 15:25

I’m in my 50s, so I have plenty of experience using the women’s public lavatories. In the past 5 years, I’ve noticed that the queues are out of this world. And not just in tbe UK. Everywhere I go, the women’s queues are always super long and move very slowly.

is it that people now use their phone whilst in there? A pee and a quick browse?

ladies, what’s going on?! Are our bladders and rectums getting bigger so it takes more time to discharge, or are we using public loos to catch up on our social media when out and about?

is it just me who has noticed this? I don’t go any more often than when I was in my 30s.

Am I being unreasonable for thinking that women’s lav queues are getting ridiculous?

Just use the disabled ones (or the mens?!!)

Err, no you don't. Unless you're disabled. 🙄

Here goes - gender neutral toilets would ease the burden.

Hope you've got your hard hat on🤭

If you cannot hold it and really need to go why not? If no one else is waiting for it it's just an empty toilet doing nothing. Seen plenty of people use them when queues are really long.

Walkingtheplank · 05/11/2024 16:06

I agree that a lot of people take a lot of time - when I cone out of the cubicle the next person in the queue is the person who was behind me when I went in. I genuinely do not understand why so many people take so long- not everyone can be on their period, have a tricky trouser fastening, other medical needs etc.

However, whilst there is unequal provision e.g the above PP who mentioned that her renovated church building has 2 male cubicles for each female cubicle, and it's mums who generally take children to the loo etc there will always be a queue for the ladies.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/11/2024 16:08

I think it’s always been the same.

There do need to be a lot more women’s toilets across the board though

My vote is for the current belief that unless you are drinking water constantly, you must be dehydrated.

I nearly had a full on argument with a guy in bike shop who could not fathom that I could go on a bike ride w/o water (I was delaying getting a bottle cage fitted).
Really mate....I'm a keen sportswoman in my 50s, it's not hot, I know my body.

"Are you looking after your hydration?"
Say what now? We used to say "are you thirsty?"

jolota · 05/11/2024 16:09

Yes, I've found it noticeably longer the last few years. I don't understand it, I want to get in and out as soon as possible.

No, it is not a good thing to do, unless you are, you know, disabledHmm

Hillarious · 05/11/2024 16:13

I went with DH to watch some cricket at Lord's. No queues there for the ladies, but plenty for the gents.

Cosycover · 05/11/2024 16:14

This is something I just can't understand.

I was at a concert last week. Queue for the ladies was very long. No queue for the men's.

Like why? Why is this? The men were peeing, I seen about 450 of them enter and leave in the time I was stood waiting.

eatyeateat · 05/11/2024 16:17

It drives me mad too but women's clothes are often harder to get off and a bunch of us have periods we need to sort in there. It will take longer than men's.

afrikat · 05/11/2024 16:18

I honestly don't understand what women spend so long doing in the toilet. Ok there will be a few who need a poo, are on their period or may have a disability but not 90% of them, who seem to spend at least 4x as long as I do in there

I was in Paris last week and every public toilet had a massive queue that took 20+ minutes. Was so annoying

ThisIsSockward · 05/11/2024 16:20

I would estimate that the average woman takes longer in a public toiler than the average man. Setting aside the ones who have a child in tow or treat visiting the loo as a social experience with friends, it just takes longer, as a woman (more clothes have to be removed, more thorough cleaning required afterwards), not to mention that women are generally more fastidious/hygienic than men, as well.

But I have no idea why/if queues are longer now than before.

BIossomtoes · 05/11/2024 16:20

The amount of time some women spend in there is insane. I went the other day, came out and the woman behind me in the queue was still waiting. Fuck knows what was going on in all the other cubicles.

No just no. I don’t want to have to wipe up men’s pee before I sit down.

I agree with PP’s there seems to be less provision for toilets especially at places where there are a lot of these, prime example recently was National Maritime Museum Greenwich. Yet at Chartwell the same month there weren’t the queues for the toilets yet it was busy there (busy car park). 🤔

You can fit a lot more urinals into a given space than cubicles.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 05/11/2024 16:22

There are no ‘rules’ to say you can’t use the disabled facilities, provided that no-one is waiting. I’ve done it a few times. It’s daft to leave one facility vacant when the queue for the ordinary loos is long.
In any case, many disabilities are not obvious.

Moonmelodies · 05/11/2024 16:23

Don't forget there are a lot more people calling themselves women nowadays, and they've all got to pee somewhere.

viques · 05/11/2024 16:23

Kombuchamonster · 05/11/2024 15:41

It's a quicker process for men, surely. They just whip it out of their flies then pop it back in. No need to go into a cubicle, faff around with tucking themselves back in, doing up poppers, pulling up tights etc, not to mention dealing with tampons / pads etc etc. Also half of them don't was their hands either.

And yes, proportionately less loos for women.

Not to mention that very often it is women who take younger children into womens toilets, so it’s not just one person , there may be two or three having a wee per cubicle.

Word of advice here for anyone planning a trip to the British Museum, do not try to use the womens loos in the big central auditorium! They are the longest queues ever. Search out other loos on other floors, it is worth the extra walk!

housethatbuiltme · 05/11/2024 16:23

Queue have always been the same, its not remotely new.

However yes I swear with age my bladder is bigger, after 3 kids I can pee like a bloody race horse and even I get bored waiting for it to end.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/11/2024 16:24

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 05/11/2024 15:26

It has been ever thus.

Yes. This.

Catza · 05/11/2024 16:25

My friend and I went to a cocktail bar a few months ago and discovered that there were exactly three cubicles in female toilets. One was broken and the other had a woman sobbing and being comforted by her friend. After about 20 minutes, the patience in the queue was running thin and threats were made to make the crying woman's situation much more urgent if she didn't vacate the cubicle immediately.
But on the whole, yes. I agree with guzzling water fashion making the situation much worse.

Cornishbeetlejuice · 05/11/2024 16:25

Reminds me of Hugh Grant “peeving” about his kids carrying bottles of water across London 😂

Really? 🙄 I've never found this to be an issue
