Hopeful that Christmas cake could be a good breakfast?

I made a Christmas cake (Nigella recipe..I recommend) but for some unknown reason, despite supposedly being on a ruthless diet, I have just eaten a bit by mistake which is really irritating as I will have to make another one now.

AIBU however, to be hopeful that this could be classed as a reasonable breakfast? If you knock a bit of the icing off? Lots of raisins so perhaps one of my 5 a day? And I think they contain fibre?

100% reasonable. It's just like soreen but with more booze.

Not sure the icing counts, but my granola had almonds in it this morning so that's the marzipan issue resolved.

DilemmaDelilah · 05/11/2024 10:35

Probably ought to have included some cheese, for protein you understand......

TalkingInTheKitchenAtParties · 05/11/2024 10:44

Definitely a healthy breakfast in my books! The dried fruit counts for at least one of your 5 a day and the eggs give you some protein. Have another slice!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/11/2024 11:01

Fruit, eggs, I mean, it's ideal really.

Cookiesandcream1989 · 05/11/2024 11:04

Definitely! It's probably at least one of your five a day, and so filling. I agree with the pp who said add cheese for protein so you feel fuller for longer.

barnstone · 05/11/2024 11:05

Have a glass of wine while you're at it. That's basically grape juice, so another one of your five a day. 😁

BeachRide · 05/11/2024 11:08

Coffee is made from beans, isn't it?

soupfiend · 05/11/2024 11:09

Its virtually a health food. A superfood in fact.

Spedledrift · 05/11/2024 11:10

Well this is my favourite thread for a while. I feel like I've found my people. Hellooooo, fellow Christmas-cake for breakfast-ers

PigeonTamer · 05/11/2024 11:12

My Christmas cakes are usually about 70% saturated with sherry which unfortunately rather compromises the health giving benefits of the dried fruit component.

AlohaRose · 05/11/2024 12:46

Be honest now, if you've iced your Christmas cake in November, you were never expecting it to be still around at Christmas! 🤣

Nordione1 · 05/11/2024 13:11

I had used quite a lot of brandy in it, but this morning has gone really well! Full of beans. So I'm thinking I might carry on with this great new breakfast recipe? It's quite a large Christmas cake.

Have you made Nigella's Christmas muffins? They're nice for breakfast too.

Nordione1 · 05/11/2024 13:17

Although people might raise an eyebrow if I have to say "unfortunately I can't drive just at the moment as I've just had breakfast".

Soaking fruit in alcohol apparently increases the antioxidant level, so it's practically a health food. When I was broke in 1994, there was a full week when I had Grandma's leftover Christmas cake for lunch at work. Thankfully I didn't have to drive anywhere!

Konfuzzled · 05/11/2024 13:37

I like crumble for breakfast. It's basically fruit and granola if you use oats in the topping.

This made me laugh and now everyone in the staff room wants to know what's funny

I'm hungry and I want Christmas cake!!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 05/11/2024 13:40

Sounds great!
I love Christmas pudding for breakfast and buy all the half price ones after Christmas for January breakfasts.
we often have leftover crumble or rice pudding for brekkie.
i had leftover lasagna this morning.

BerthaFlapjack · 05/11/2024 13:47

Three of your five a day at least.

The dried fruit.

The flour which is from wheat which is like grass so basically salad.

The sugar which is from sugar beet which is basically a fancy turnip.

What with the eggs for protein it really couldn't be healthier.

Its the massive MN salad!!!!

OP can make this last over several meals.

I highly approve

Absolutely

swiftieswoop · 05/11/2024 14:23

The calories it takes to go to all the faff to make a Christmas cake will balance it out.

<you can also eat Christmas cake year-round, same with pigs in blankets...>

The icing should be egg white and sugar, which has come either from sugar cane or sugar beet. So another plant food.

Slightly off topic but every Christmas my Mil makes a sherry trifle so boozy you really can't drive after having a portion! Yum! As for your cake I've read that fruit cake is quite good for you, it's all those yummy vine fruits I think.
