Asked not to wear a Rolex to work…

Hydrangeajp · 04/11/2024 17:22

I've been with my current company for several years in a senior legal role, managing a team. The company's struggling lately - redundancies, pay freezes, and bonus cuts. My own manager recently left, and their replacement (board level), joined last week. After a positive initial face-to-face meet, she scheduled a meeting later that week about the Rolex watch she noticed me wearing into the office.

She told me it was inappropriate and insensitive, given both my seniority and the company’s current situation, and ultimately requested that I stop wearing it to work. She essentially said that "most senior staff already know to avoid wearing expensive, flashy items to work”.

I’ve had this watch for years and wear it daily. I’ve never given it any thought and would think most people wouldn’t even notice it's a Rolex. Am I the completely deluded and inappropriate one here? I was so taken aback and put on the spot that I simply agreed not to wear it, but since then I can't stop thinking I should’ve stood my ground (not because I’m desperate to wear the watch, rather, the whole ask felt excessive and inappropriate?) WWYD? I’d really appreciate an honest outsider’s perspective.

I am great at pointless resentment, and earn a pittance, but this wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
What does bother me when I am working hard for a company that is going down the pan and threatening all our livelihoods, is stupid decisions that directly harm the business.
So not an individual wearing a rolex - more "rolex style" business decisions - flashy, showy, ego driven, pointless crap that just makes me wonder "who is paying for this? Oh right, me".

I know that, as individuals, there are people who earn orders of magnitude more than me. It's them fucking up the business that pisses me off.

Why was it deleted? It was funny AF 😂

I assume that mnhq thought it was troll hunting? 🤷‍♀️🙈😁

most Rolexs are self winding, not battery, precision or otherwise.

Would it really hurt to be a bit more low key until any redundancies have been and gone and the financial climate is better.

And don't kid yourself, people do notice these things.

I was made redundant from my first job after 8 years service. Do you think I noticed or gave one tiny xxxx about what watch my manager was wearing?

icelolly12 · 04/11/2024 21:54

"It was a gift" steely tone and look.

Like what? You really, really aren't convincing me that you're a senior lawyer. The KCs I know would just laugh this off.

It’d be easy for the KCs you know to laugh it off what with them being full self employed and all Hmm

That is crazy! Next they will be telling you to change your car because the brand makes others feel bad. I would ignore and keep wearing your watch.

An old colleague of mine was asked to use a different car when visiting clients because the boss didn't want clients thinking we were paying him enough to drive something that flashy (We weren't the guy was from family money)

Babbahabba · 04/11/2024 21:59

I don't even notice what watches people are wearing. It's not like you've got a big gold rapper's chain on 🤣 Seems a bit overkill.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/11/2024 22:01

DinosaurMunch · 04/11/2024 20:51

I wouldn't worry. Poor people don't know what a Rolex looks like or how much it's worth.
Expensive cars are much more obvious. Or fancy holidays or talking about home improvements or cleaners or private schools.

We do know how to read, however surprised you may be by this revelation. After all, they make a point of writing the brand on the watchface for the benefit of others - it can't be for the owner, as they already know they've got a watch costing the annual salary of whoever's on Reception.

R-O-L-E-X.

No it's a Swiss precision battery

😂

MissTrip82 · 04/11/2024 22:13

Is she right about the other senior managers?

She’s telling you something about office culture as she sees it, and she’s at the highest level of management. In a company that’s struggling.

I’d take as fit in or F off. Up to you which one you choose.

J1Dub · 04/11/2024 22:14

Rolex watches are so common I'm surprised anyone would look twice at it.

WigglyVonWaggly · 04/11/2024 22:15

Well, as a lawyer you no doubt take the truth very seriously but I’d be making up some shite about having given it some thought and with it being an incredibly sentimental gift that you can’t bear to take off, you’ve decided you won’t.

ParsnipPuree · 04/11/2024 22:29

I'd say "I'm surprised you even noticed my watch" Will piss her right off.

roadrager · 04/11/2024 22:32

She's jealous 😂

Personally speaking I wouldn't know if someone was wearing a Rolex, nor would I care

thecatsarecrazy · 04/11/2024 22:33

I doubt many would even notice. I have a rolex it's over 20 years old and wear it on the odd occasion I go out. I doubt anyone has a clue I'm wearing one.

butterfly0404 · 04/11/2024 22:43

Wear it and be damned- They pay you to work, they don't have a say on what Wrist Candy you wear.

noodlezoodle · 04/11/2024 23:04

What a load of sexist bollocks.

I would be tempted to drop the watch but add a tiara instead.

financialcareerstuff · 04/11/2024 23:54

I'm surprised by the lack of sympathy for the employee view in the responses.

Redundancies are horrific to go through. People go through depression, breakdowns. Are worrying about feeding their families, even commit suicide sometimes.... , and managers' insensitivities in communicating them make it a ton worse.

Sorry but Rolexes are status symbols... they are worn often to communicate importance and that the person has money to burn. I can totally see a new senior lawyer turning up, wearing a Rolex, would make people spitting mad on top of redundancies.

You have a choice- be an ass and stick with your watch (which is clearly very noticeable - don't fool yourself) or show a bit of humility, empathy and flexibility at a difficult time in a company in which I assume you would like to succeed in?

financialcareerstuff · 04/11/2024 23:59

Sorry I misread- you are not the new one.... so a bit less clear... but still think more empathy would not be a bad thing.

And someone said this is sexist, but you haven't actually said you are a woman. If you are a woman, and they are not expecting the same compromises from the men, then that is clearly unreasonable.

But I think the request itself is wise. Not legally justifiable, but wise and thoughtful.

I have never understood why Rolex watches are so popular.

They look heavy and clunky. Also gangster rapper associations.

My thing is vintage Swatch watches from the early 80s to early 90s i like collecting them.

tooface · 05/11/2024 00:12

Tortielady · 04/11/2024 20:50

I don't have a Rolex and nor would I know one if I saw it. But I know they are hugely expensive and if you have something like that, it's a pity not to get all the use you can out of it. Precious stones and valuable minerals were mined out of the ground, for what? To sit in a drawer waiting for Terry the Tea-Leaf to bash the door in? Many times no.

Given that you've already said you won't wear your Rolex to work, I don't know how you go about addressing this, but it would be interesting to know who's been asked to leave their Cartiers, Bentleys and Mont Blanc pens at home and go into work in suits from George at Asda.

Nothing wrong with George at Asda. Not everyone can afford Armani etc.

Oblomov24 · 04/11/2024 21:08

Ask her if you're allowed to wear a new broach. Wink

Is that the necklace from Titanic?

Moonshine5 · 05/11/2024 00:18

Wear a jumper with holes in next week.
