Asked not to wear a Rolex to work…

Hydrangeajp · 04/11/2024 17:22

I've been with my current company for several years in a senior legal role, managing a team. The company's struggling lately - redundancies, pay freezes, and bonus cuts. My own manager recently left, and their replacement (board level), joined last week. After a positive initial face-to-face meet, she scheduled a meeting later that week about the Rolex watch she noticed me wearing into the office.

She told me it was inappropriate and insensitive, given both my seniority and the company’s current situation, and ultimately requested that I stop wearing it to work. She essentially said that "most senior staff already know to avoid wearing expensive, flashy items to work”.

I’ve had this watch for years and wear it daily. I’ve never given it any thought and would think most people wouldn’t even notice it's a Rolex. Am I the completely deluded and inappropriate one here? I was so taken aback and put on the spot that I simply agreed not to wear it, but since then I can't stop thinking I should’ve stood my ground (not because I’m desperate to wear the watch, rather, the whole ask felt excessive and inappropriate?) WWYD? I’d really appreciate an honest outsider’s perspective.

Unless they have a uniform policy that states you can't wear brands or certain items of jewellery, she doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Sethera · 04/11/2024 17:25

Tell her it's a fake you bought for £20 in Thailand.

Quitelikeit · 04/11/2024 17:25

You have agreed now. Is it really a hill you want to die on?!

arinya · 04/11/2024 17:25

I would be taken aback too. I’ve previously worked with junior colleagues who have more expensive clothes, jewellery and cars than I do 😆

lateatwork · 04/11/2024 17:26

Is this a wind up?

HecatesBees · 04/11/2024 17:26

You're in a "senior legal role" and you are here asking for advice? I dont wish to be rude, but surely you know the best way forward here?

(edit, missed the word way )

Soupwithstring · 04/11/2024 17:27

That's crackers. It could have been your 18th birthday present.
I'd have laughed and said a firm no.

No it's a Swiss precision battery

TwentyBillion · 04/11/2024 17:27

Well I hope she's driving an old banger to work and not some flash car and is not holidaying in exotic places, or wearing designer clothes, as surely that's rubbing people's noses in it too!

Absolutely ridiculous! What people choose to spend their own money on is completely up to them!

Would she be saying that to a junior member of the team??

FuckMeUpFlorida · 04/11/2024 17:27

I'd tell her to take a number. Nobody would tell me what jewellery I could or couldn't wear, they don't own me.

I wore a Rolex Tudor watch, gift from my Dad, for about 35 years until the bracelet bit broke and too expensive to replace. It was the only watch I owned so I wouldn't be taking it off .

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 04/11/2024 17:28

I would have politely told her to fuck off.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 04/11/2024 17:28

Initially, I was like, I agree, thinking that if your employees are facing layoffs, wearing a new role is in poor taste

But, if you've been wearing it for years and it's not super flashy, I wouldn't budge.

It's not as though you've just bought it and are showing off to everyone

She sounds weird. I'd just say, I've worn it for years and I love it, so not going to stop wearing it. If i were her, I would've waited to see whether anyone is actually offended before bringing it up

Would it really hurt to be a bit more low key until any redundancies have been and gone and the financial climate is better.

And don't kid yourself, people do notice these things.

Wherethewildthingsfart · 04/11/2024 17:29

I remember a post on here years ago about someone complaining that their manager wore a designer belt and they felt that she (always a she, men can do as they wish) was rubbing the employees faces in it.

I would continue to wear the watch. Is there a policy regarding uniform?

ObsidianTree · 04/11/2024 17:29

I would go with the it's a fake line.... If you own a watch that expensive, I'm guessing you want to use the bloody thing! I wouldn't be taking it off for anyone!

I agreed because I was completely blindsided at the time, and was in shock. I now worry if I don’t challenge this and set boundaries early on, it could lead to further issues down the line.

Have senior management considered giving their lower paid staff a pay rise instead of not wearing flashy jewellery?

I'm amazed they scheduled a meeting about this. I do understand their point kind of but also it's none of their business.
