Do you button up your duvet cover before washing?

Please help resolve an incredibly minor dispute in our house. I’ve just changed our sheets and when I went to put on the clean duvet cover it was buttoned up so I had to unbutton it to put it on and then re button it. It has proper fiddly wooden buttons and it may be just menopause but I have the rage over this.

So…

YABU: Yes I button up the duvet cover before putting it in the washing machine to stop other items going inside it.

YANU: What a waste of time. If any items go inside the duvet cover during washing then it’s easy to take them out before drying.

YABU.

When items get inside the duvet they don't spin so well, so are wetter at the end and so take longer to dry. I only do every other button though, that's usually enough

BabyCloud · 03/11/2024 15:34

I button it up so that socks and other items don’t end up trapped inside.

Itstime2023 · 03/11/2024 15:35

Personally I button it because it's so annoying to have everything else get tangled. It's really not adding too much extra time.

Roystonv · 03/11/2024 15:35

Yes (or rather dh does as designated bed changer) as once the washing got in such a tangle/twist inside the cover that it took ages to untangle it and it was hard work, so never again.

Mimiconvos · 03/11/2024 15:36

Oh I defo button up before washing and drying, otherwise any small items end up in a ball inside it and don’t get washed properly.

mondaytosunday · 03/11/2024 15:36

Yes I do button it up. Better yet I've now bought a washable one that I only put a cover on in winter.
And why don't they all have zips? So much easier!

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 03/11/2024 15:36

I button every other button. Does the job of keeping everything from bundling inside, without taking too long to undo again when it's bedtime and you've just remembered you haven't made the bed!

NorthantsNewbie · 03/11/2024 15:36

I don’t, but we have super king size bedding and I don’t wash it all at once to avoid overloading the machine, so I just wash the duvet cover by itself. Whoever wants to button it should also be responsible for unbuttoning, though.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 03/11/2024 15:38

I have a duvet cover witth a zip along each edge. It is a godsend!
All other covers are buttoned; bastards, havecto be done up!

TheNoodlesIncident · 03/11/2024 15:38

I do fasten it up when it gets washed because as PP have said, things get stuck inside and stay scrunched up at the bottom of the duvet cover.

However, because I'm not mad, I don't put the laundered duvet set away with the bottom still fastened up. That would be daft!

Miffylou · 03/11/2024 15:42

YANB AT ALL U! My husband does this too when he puts the washing in and it drives me round the bend. We don't put small things like socks in the same wash and even if a pillowcase does end up inside it’s easy to see and get out. The worst tangle I’ve ever had after a wash, when things got in a real knot and took ages to untangle, was when the cover had been buttoned.

Grrr.

Hotafternoon · 03/11/2024 15:43

I have a Dorma quilt cover that has a zip. It's so much better than poppers or the fiddly buttons.

I wish all duvet covers were zipped.

SunblockSue · 03/11/2024 15:44

It has never crossed my mind that you'd button it up before washing!

PinkiOcelot · 03/11/2024 15:48

No I don’t but when I’ve got pillow cases stuck in it, I always wish I had.

Nannyfannybanny · 03/11/2024 15:48

When I never bothered with the buttons or press studs,my entire washload was inside the duvet cover, learned my lesson, it's always done up before going in the washing machine.yes,it comes off the line like that, means it's easier to fold neatly and smooth out, before putting in the airing cupboard.

kitsuneghost · 03/11/2024 15:50

I button up. Makes it so much easier on the other side

purplebeansprouts · 03/11/2024 15:51

Yes unless its just in with pillow cases or a couple of jumpers or a sheet

Butteredtoast55 · 03/11/2024 15:53

I'm prepared to accept I'm in a minority but I button it, wash it and then unbutton to dry and......wait for it.....iron!

HelpMeGetThrough · 03/11/2024 15:53

Yep, I do up every other popper to stop the cover eating everything else that goes in with it.

We've got one that doesn't do up and it's a right pain.

Conniebygaslight · 03/11/2024 15:59

Yes I do.

elQuintoConyo · 03/11/2024 16:01

Yes. Bonkers not to. There are about 10 buttons on hours, takes less than a minute.

@Butteredtoast55 you are my type of person - I do the same!

When, oh when will Mumsnet add a
'This poster is clearly off their head '
button?

FastFood · 03/11/2024 16:04

Nope, and not all of my duvet covers have buttons anyway. Easy to retrieve any rogue sock.

travelallthetime · 03/11/2024 16:05

no I dont, but that makes so much sense to everything doesnt end up inside it. I will be doing this in future!
