Do you button up your duvet cover before washing?

Please help resolve an incredibly minor dispute in our house. I’ve just changed our sheets and when I went to put on the clean duvet cover it was buttoned up so I had to unbutton it to put it on and then re button it. It has proper fiddly wooden buttons and it may be just menopause but I have the rage over this.

So…

YABU: Yes I button up the duvet cover before putting it in the washing machine to stop other items going inside it.

YANU: What a waste of time. If any items go inside the duvet cover during washing then it’s easy to take them out before drying.

I always button duvets up. Got fed up with losing socks and pants in them.

When I remember! Ihave had items get inside the duvet and the washing be sopping wet because the machine didn´t spin because of it!

Now that did make me tetchy!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 04/11/2024 14:37

Yes and I've trained DH and both DC to do the same. Any time the duvet has been washed without being buttoned up first, everything has ended up inside it in a huge ball and it drives me crackers. Only takes a few seconds to do (and to undo when you're making the bed) it's a no brainer to me!

CaptainHammer · 04/11/2024 14:39

I button up. Not every single button but 2 or 3 is enough to stop everything bundling inside

HappyAsASandboy · 04/11/2024 14:49

I button it (every other button) so stuff doesn't go inside.

Washing is a combination of detergent, water temp and agitation. If the washing is all bunched up inside a duvet cover then it doesn't get agitated properly.

Husband doesn't button it. Then moves it to the dryer with the stuff still inside the duvet cover so it doesn't dry either, and comes out creases and damp, drives me nuts.

Eon says a shorter wash cycle saves fuel and a lot of other sites say that, bear in mind I did say I also do a lot on a cold cycle

Buttons on a duvet cover? What fresh hell is this?

Er, normal bedding, what else, poppers prob on cheap polycotton.
Personally I prefer slightly premium non high street cotton bedding, buttons standard

LifeofBrienne · 04/11/2024 16:08

No, never! Might get the odd small item inside but I simply shake it out. Laundry’s enough of a faff without adding extra steps.

Alright, no need to sound so snobby, my Ikea and Dunelm have buttons on them, I dont have any polycotton but very much 'high street' in this house also know how to make good quality cotton bedding. With buttons!

Or zips as per some of my Dorma

If i don't button mine up I end up with a great big tangled ball of washing inside it

LoveBluey · 04/11/2024 18:34

Absolutely not. It has never occurred to me to button before putting in the wash.
But my big shock from this thread is that people put duvet covers and socks in the same load. Mind blown!

soupfiend · 04/11/2024 18:39

Ive just changed the bed, made sure to zip up the one Im putting in the wash. Theres no room for socks or anything else, its the cover, the sheet, 4 pillow cases. Its full to the brim, king size bedding but if I dont zip it up then all the pillow cases will end up all scrawled up in the cover and wrestling with a wet huge cover with short arms to get the slips out to re spin them because they'll be wringing wet is not my idea of fun.

Then I got out my fresh bedding, happy to see it was inside out and buttoned up

And what brand was it I thought to myself with these lovely fancy buttons and good quality cotton, oh, Kirkton House, aka Aldi!!

AuntyMabelandPippin · 04/11/2024 18:42

I find it so much easier to button the duvet up, rather than spend hours untangling everything from inside it, and having to put it back in the dryer as none of it has dried properly.

I also iron my bedding. 😂

MellersSmellers · 04/11/2024 18:44

Haha, never even heard of this but now I have - seems like a good idea!

user2848502016 · 04/11/2024 18:48

Yes I do, because if you don't everything ends up inside the duvet cover in a big ball and doesn't wash properly.
I do every other button up to lessen the pain!
Maybe you need duvet covers with poppers on them!

Compash · 04/11/2024 18:49

Bear with me on this, but... I do up EVERY OTHER BUTTON! Stops it filling with pants and shirts, but less buttoning.

Solomon's Judgement. 🧐

Ive tried this, it leads to a false sense of security, that pillow slip will find its way in between the open button gaps.

Dammit. 🙈

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 04/11/2024 19:14

If I can be bothered ... always regret it if I don't!

Ultravox · 04/11/2024 19:26

Gah - looks like I am there unreasonable one! Mind you I don’t put clothing in with my bedding so not so much to get tangled.

StormingNorman · 04/11/2024 19:29

Buttoning up and unbuttoning is such a waste of time. I leave it unbuttoned and turn it inside out so it’s ready to go straight on the duvet.

Laiste · 04/11/2024 20:17

Zips on Dorma bedding 😊

PassingStranger · 04/11/2024 20:50

Of course. Otherwise everything gets tangled up inside, it takes longer to sort it all out, while falling with a wet duvet.

EON says it uses less energy

😂😂😂

ask yourself who sells energy & who manufactures washing machines??

now have a wee think...
