Severe lower back pain

GrumpyWombat · 03/11/2024 12:28

I have had aches and pains in my lower back for a while. Yesterday I was running up the stairs and I felt like a ping and had to drop to all fours. The pain since then has been horrific.

I have some 30/500 cocodamol and have been taking those with ibuprofen and while it slightly takes the edge of it is still very painful. I feel as though I’m not getting any sensation from my bladder when it is full. Now panicking about cauda equina. I did the 111 online assessment thing and that just mentioned not being able to urinate at all or being incontinent.

I work in a nursery and have done lots of picking up children this week after almost two weeks off for half term.

You need to get to A&E and be checked out and scanned. I've had CE following an a cident and recently had surgery. Please don't ignore red flags .

QuestionableMouse · 03/11/2024 12:33

Go to A&E.

Why are you even asking? Go asap before you end up doing more damage!

GrumpyWombat · 03/11/2024 12:41

I feel like I may be overreacting though. I do have anxiety so find it difficult to know when to genuinely be worried

You need to go to the hospital. Now.

You're definitely not over-reacting.
Please go and get checked out (and they can possibly give you some stronger pain relief) - wishing you lots of luck and a speedy recovery x

LadyLolaRuben · 03/11/2024 12:50

Go to hospital immediately OP, right now!

TinyBlueHoe · 03/11/2024 12:52

A&E!

ACynicalDad · 03/11/2024 12:53

I had a slipped disc and was told if I had these symptoms get to A&E immediatelty.

Nothanks17 · 03/11/2024 12:53

Go to an urgent care centre

I have exact same problem and now having physiotherapy

Its bloody horrible :(

GrumpyWombat · 03/11/2024 13:04

Thanks, I’m terrible for needing reassurance. I will go to hospital x

Op needs a full A&E not urgent care because she needs proper scans.

She needs A&E, not urgent care. Back pain and not being able to sense when you need to go to the toilet is a life-threatening emergency.

buffyspikefaith · 03/11/2024 13:52

Definitely a&e. My only symptom was feeling like warm water was running down my legs and I had CES

Emmadaily · 03/11/2024 13:59

Good luck @GrumpyWombat
Hope things get sorted for you x

Some urgent care centres are standalone services, & as not collated with an emergency department cannot carry out the investigations required here.

OP go to A&E/an emergency department. 💐

PermanentlyTired03 · 03/11/2024 14:44

I had CE, started off with back pain, then awful puns and needles then numbness in ‘saddle area’. Go to a full a&e with an MRI. I was operated on at 1am it’s that urgent to save the nerves. Better be safe than sorry x

GrumpyWombat · 03/11/2024 15:30

I went to A&E, been triaged and been given an appointment to go to the urgent treatment centre in a different area of the hospital at 6pm. They seemed unconcerned about “altered sensation” 🤷🏼‍♀️

Please don't let them send you home without a scan.

timetodecide2345 · 03/11/2024 16:45

Loss of sensation is serious and needs medical care not Mumsnet!

GrumpyWombat · 03/11/2024 18:29

Did you read that I’m at the hospital?

GrumpyWombat · 03/11/2024 18:31

They aren’t scanning me 🤷🏼‍♀️ giving me diazepam and something in a suppository?

OP posts:
susiedaisy1912 · 03/11/2024 18:37

When I felt a ping and then excruciating pain it was a slipped disc. It followed days of back ache and then I bent down and it went, never known such pain. You have my sympathy op. Hope you feel better soon

The possibility of cauda equina won't be dismissed just because you've been streamed to to urgent care. The suppository could be diclofenac, a non steroidal antiinflammatory. The effect of this pain relief will help your clinician decide a probable diagnosis & plan.

QuestionableMouse · 04/11/2024 11:32

How are you doing @GrumpyWombat

QuarterHorse · 04/11/2024 15:12

Hope your okay OP. They gave me the diclofenac suppositories. It really helped, but I still had to be treated for CE.

I do hope you are feeling better .
