To use Jacob if I don't like Jake

Baby boy born over a week ago and we still can't decide on a name, names I liked were Arthur ,Sebastian and Hugo but we couldn't have due to various reasons. We've both said we like Jacob but I really hate Jake as a nickname. Can I call him Jacob without the nickname Jake ending up being used?
Other suggestions welcome

My grandson is s a 15 year old Jacob, always known as Jacob, never Jake.

There’s a Jacob in my DS class (yr. 4) he’s only ever been known as and called Jacob. Just tells people his name is Jacob if asked.

Same as my nephew is Samuel and has never been called Sam, he is only known as Samuel.

Ultimately though it will be down to your son, yes you can tell everyone to call him Jacob and they will, but if he prefers Jake and asks friends to call him that then that’s what they’ll know him as. My friends son is Joseph and to her and his family he is Joseph but to friends he is Joe.

Do you like kobi?

I don't like it as a full name, but I'd have to shorten Jacob & I prefer it to Jake.

or do you like Jack?

My Dad hated my friends shortening my name & he'd always say 'it's 'full name' not xyz!

I think shortening a name is very different to a nickname. You can't stop friends from developing a nick name for your kids, but you can drive a shortening in the direction you prefer.

like a Victoria getting a Nick name of bunny because she's Rabbit mad. Nick name.

as opposed to preferring Tory over Vicky and using Tory yourself.

it a totally different thing.

but I think anything you don't like a shortening of should be avoided, unless there's another shortening you like and would use.

my cousins daughter is Victoria, called Tory from birth at about 23 she decided to be Vicky. It took me ages to swap over.🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

I do know someone who was Jacob from birth to adulthood but that’s because he prefers Jacob over any shortenings. If you don’t like Jake then it’s too risky to gamble on your son feeling the same.

catin8oots · 02/11/2024 14:57

my Jacob has always been shortened to Jake

Ivecomeoutoflurking · 02/11/2024 14:58

My Jake is Jake because I'm the opposite to you and I didn't like Jacob!!! He has always just been Jake.
Where I work there are a lot of Jacobs and every one of them is known as Jacob. Never heard any of them be shortened to Jay or Jake

ThisIsSockward · 02/11/2024 15:22

You can always correct people and request that he be called by his full name, as long as he agrees with you. If he decides he prefers Jake, that's another matter. My sister's name is one that is commonly shortened, but DM (and DS herself) put a stop to that, where she was concerned. 😆

lovelysunshine22 · 02/11/2024 15:39

Every jake i know id actually called jake. I don't know anyone who shortens jacob to jake.

kitsuneghost · 02/11/2024 15:51

Not if you are in England. England are notorious for speech laziness.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 02/11/2024 15:55

All the Jacob's I know are called Jacob. You might have to politely correct people a the beginning, and he might choose to be Jake when he's old enough. But it's not inevitable.

FWIW everyone always claims on here that Dominic is always shortened to Dom and that you can't stop it happening. My Dominic is only called Dominic. A polite "please don't call me Dom" if someone does it works well.

Noshowlomo · 02/11/2024 15:56

My best friends son is called Jacob. Even they cal him Jake.
You’ll have no control what others call him, obviously you can ask your family and friends to call him Jacob.

Dahlietta · 02/11/2024 16:08

I have taught a lot of Jakes who were christened Jake, a few who were christened Jacob and a few Jacobs who always went by Jacob. It's much more common now for people to go by their full names - it would have been unheard of when I was a child to be called David, Michael, Stephen etc rather than their shortened forms, but it's really very common now. What you can't get away from is the fact that he might like his friends to call him Jake (but quite possibly not if nobody else ever has). We had this with our sons, but I reasoned that I don't have to call them that so what does it really matter?
I have also taught quite a lot of children whose names are for example Alex, but their parents very much call them Alexander or equivalent.

dollopofsauce · 02/11/2024 16:22

i have a Jacob and only people that call him Jake are me and his dad. At no point in primary or secondary did any of his friends or teachers call him Jake!

Sorry this is nonsense - I know four Jakes and they are all Jacob! It’s the short form, 100%

I know one Jacob who is Jacob.

Honestly never heard of anyone being given the name Jake on the birth certificate - it would be like putting Bob on there 🤣

OP if you hate Jake, don’t do it. How about Jonah or Jonas?

There's no need to be rude. I know three Jakes and they are all Jake. So your experience is different, that's all.

LoquaciousPineapple · 02/11/2024 17:37

I mean, it's irrelevant what other people's experiences are. If your Jacob wants to be called Jake, that's the end of it really. And that's a strong possibility even if you spend his life trying to avoid Jake.

Hmm… no.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/11/2024 12:52

None of the Jacobs I know are Jakes.
One is a Coby.

⬆️⬆️ this! I feel like I'm in a parallel universe. Jake is literally the shortened form of Jacob where we are.

A million percent agree!!!!

loobylou10 · 03/11/2024 17:05

@catin8oots 👏👏👏

SugarMiceInTheRain · 03/11/2024 17:07

All the Jacobs I know are still known as Jacob, not Jake. I much prefer Jacob to Jake and used it for one of mine!
