To use Jacob if I don't like Jake

Baby boy born over a week ago and we still can't decide on a name, names I liked were Arthur ,Sebastian and Hugo but we couldn't have due to various reasons. We've both said we like Jacob but I really hate Jake as a nickname. Can I call him Jacob without the nickname Jake ending up being used?
Other suggestions welcome

I have never known a Jacob called Jake. One boy I taught liked being called Jac/Jack.

StressedQueen · 02/11/2024 12:30

I think it'll be absolutely fine! I never really ever associate Jake with Jacob tbh and it is perfectly possible to have a Jacob without having the nickname Jake. Just introduce him as Jacob.

I also love Jacob and hate Jake

SpudleyLass · 02/11/2024 12:30

One of my nephews is called Jacob.

He has never been called Jake in his life.

Its definitely possible.

AhBiscuits · 02/11/2024 12:30

When he's a teen his friends will probably call him by whatever his last name is.
Possibly with a Y on the end.
I don't think you should rule it out because of nicknames he may never have.

CheshireDing · 02/11/2024 12:32

My DS has one of each in his class, I think one has been shortened to Jake by the boys to differentiate between the 2 Jacobs

I always thought Jake was a shortened version of Jacob

We have a Hugo and an Arthur, you wouldn't think you could shortened Hugo to much but turns out his siblings can 🤣

CruCru · 02/11/2024 12:33

If you call him Jacob, please do not be one of those parents who shouts at his friends when they shorten his name.

FrequentlyAskedQuestion · 02/11/2024 12:36

We have a Jacob in the family and he has never been called Jake, not when he was a baby, at school, or now, at 30.

Another younger one is Jacob or J / Jay but that’s his choice.

Hortonhearsawhat · 02/11/2024 12:36

My Jacob doesn't like Jake, especially now he's a teenager. He'll correct people if they call him Jake, it's either Jacob or Jay. There's another Jacob in his class and he's the same.

justusandthecat · 02/11/2024 12:37

My son is Jacob and the only person who calls him Jake is me. I know 2 adult Jacob's, one is called Jacob by everyone. The other has a nickname based on his surname.

iamtheblcksheep · 02/11/2024 12:37

Why can’t you use the names you like? It doesn’t matter if someone else has them. Nobody owns a name.

budgiegirl · 02/11/2024 12:38

You can call him Jacob if you love it, but be prepared that others may call him Jay, Jake, Jake, or he may choose this himself. I have a name that can be shortened (such as Victoria being shortened to Vicky). In my teens I chose to be called Vicky - now my work colleagues call me Vicky, my friends and family call me Vick. The only person that calls me Victoria is my mother! Which I don't mind at all.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 02/11/2024 12:39

My cousin is named Jacob and literally no one ever calls him Jake. I didn’t even think Jake was short for Jacob?

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 02/11/2024 12:40

You’ll have no control over how the name gets shortened. If you really hate Jake best avoid Jacob.

Paulspots · 02/11/2024 13:04

Stick to your guns and correct people that shorten it.*

Are you my mother in law? She's still doing this even though her son is 48 and doesn't want to use his full name 🤣

thesoundofwildgeese · 02/11/2024 13:05

nomorehocuspocus · 02/11/2024 12:05

The only people I know called Jake are named Jake. I didn't know people would shorten Jacob to Jake anyway.

Jay would be more likely I'd have thought.

We have a Jacob. Known as "Jake" since childhood. But you could consider "Jay" if you don't like "Jake".

suburburban · 02/11/2024 13:06

I think he can still be called Jacob and not shortened

thesoundofwildgeese · 02/11/2024 13:06

BMW6 · 02/11/2024 12:26

Surely Jacobs get nicknamed Crackers?

Never happened with ours.

suburburban · 02/11/2024 13:07

Jay is an alternative shortening which I much prefer

OchAyeTheN00 · 02/11/2024 13:10

I don’t know one Jake but plenty of Jacob’s.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 02/11/2024 13:15

Nicknames happen beyond your control, my friend Jonny is only called Jonathan by his family, I think they hate everyone calls him Jonny. My mum often recalls a primary school friend’s mum, my classmate was Hugo and she liked the name because she thought the only shortening of it really would be Hugh, she was really unimpressed when we all started calling him Huggy. He still uses it now and I do wonder if is mum got over it!

fwiw I know 2 Jacobs who both go by Jake.

LetThereBeLove · 02/11/2024 13:18

DDs name was shortened to Becky (which I hate) as soon as she started school.
I never call her by this nickname and you can call your boy Jacob (a lovely name!)

SarahAndQuack · 02/11/2024 13:27

I have a daughter whose name has a common shortening I dislike; she's 7 now and no one uses it. I do think it depends how much you hate it though - for me, I don't care if DD ends up choosing to use it later on, but I wouldn't have liked people deciding to call her that as a baby. If you hate 'Jake' so much you'll cringe every time his 17-year-old mates call him that, then no, choose something else!

Hankunamatata · 02/11/2024 13:28

Jacob is lovely. I know loads boys who haven't shortened their name

getmeavodka · 02/11/2024 13:31

My son is Jacob and is 24 now. Noone has ever called him Jake.

Mjmum10 · 02/11/2024 13:33

I called my son Jacob, I don't call him Jake. He's still very young, under one so if we shorten his name it's Jakey. No one calls him Jake. I know an older Jacob, he just gets called his full name. It's definitely personal preference, if you don't shorten it others tend to follow suit I've found
