Can you dress too young for your age?

Can you dress too young for your age, and if so how would you define dressing too young?

It could be a man or woman.

I'm interested to know how someone would describe a person dressing too young.

OP posts:

@Disturbia81 I love their clothes! Great taste

OMGitsnotgood · 02/11/2024 00:36

I'm quite old! But I don't think it's about age. Even some young people don't suit pink hair or short skirts or whatever. My honest opinion is we should wear what you think you look good in. But then I give my head a wobble and think do you know what, if a larger lady wants to wear something that shows their lumps and bumps or if an older person wants electric blue hair, feels comfortable about how they look, and couldn't give a whotsit about what people think - then good on them.

Tomatina · 02/11/2024 00:40

The only thing I find a bit off is if I see adult women (of any age) wearing overtly childish clothes. Eg frilly dresses with ribbons and bows, white ankle socks, hair in bunches, pink barbie t-shirts - that sort of thing. Or men in tiny shorts. Older men in tracksuits also look a bit odd. But these choices are rare.
Other than that, if you want to go out in black shiny stiletto boots and a ton of makeup in your 80s, I say go for it.

In the real world I haven't heard anyone use that saying for decades. It belongs in the past, along with any dinosaurs who still say it.

Agree lol. Nothing would age you more than saying that phrase - it's something my grandma used to say. Not my generation.

ForDogsSake · 02/11/2024 06:07

Wear whatever you like at whatever age you like.
Sick of this misogynistic shit dictating what women should be wearing.

Bossygal · 02/11/2024 06:17

Yes of course you can. Cmon. Every one knows it. Put a 65 year old woman in a short tight mini skirt, and cami top and send her off down the pub and see the looks she gets. Put a 65 year old man in a pair of tight skinny jeans, a muscle tee and send him off beside her and see the looks he gets.

doesn’t mean they can’t wear this stuff, but of course it’s too young for their age.

the stuff being mentioned though, jeans, hoodies, converse are ageless though , people wear them to their old age, that’s not dressing too young. It’s just dressing,

Notsurewhatodohere · 02/11/2024 06:23

Agreed, wear what makes you feel good but in terms of pure aesthetics I’ve noticed that the male CEOs in the (supposedly hip) industry I work in seem to really struggle to find a balance that doesn’t look awkward. They are 50 plus but dress as if they're 25 in the latest fashions, some have heavily dyed hair and unnatural looking tans also, it can be a bit disconcerting. I think they'd look better if they toned it down a bit and focused on fitness and a good haircut but then they would look more their age which is obviously not what they want. There are a few women at that level also and they tend to be a bit more subtle, a bit of grey hair and less ultra fashionable clothing and I think they look better and are more inspiring leaders. There’s something about the desperation of someone trying really really hard to look younger and not succeeding that’s a bit off putting at least in a leader so maybe it’s better to try a bit but not too much?

Are you joking? My DH is nearing 48, still wears hoodies and/or shirt jackets and a T-shirt under, with jeans or chinos. He's in good shape and still looks great.

I just think hoodies look a bit sloppy when you get older. Some people definitely pull them off more than others though.

I didn’t say you had to stop. I just can’t understand why any woman wouldn’t reach a point in her life where she doesn’t have the lightbulb moment that all the Cosmoplitan magazine messages around what you “should” wear are all created by a fashion industry who design it in a way to make you feel inadequate if you dont fit some weird societal norm, just so you spend more on clothes.

As long as woman is comfortable and feel confident in what they’re wearing and aren’t wearing anything illegal then maybe just let them be..?

Where is anyone not letting anyone be?

Everyone dresses the way they want within the boundaries of time and money. But because people have free choice others will form opinions on that.

No one looks at the homeless person and thinks "doesn't suit you ".

Next time someone says "I love your dress/top//hair" do remind them that it's just down to the fashion industry and they should stop commenting.

I think it is possible to dress too young for your age. But speaking as a 70 year old who loves skinny jeans, Disney tops (especially Mickey Mouse!), converse footwear, body con type dresses with heals for going out etc I try not to get too obsessed with it.

i would not wear a mini skirt, anything with a bare midriff or anything too “booby” (I’m pretty skinny, so not much to show off in that department 😁 ), but otherwise anything goes. Clothes are one way we can express our own style and personality so why not go for it.

Redcrayons · 02/11/2024 08:01

I’m very much in the wear what you like camp, but I do see clothes that my friends’ daughters wear, in their late teens and 20s, which I know are not for me.

Im laughing at the idea that jeans, hoodies and converse are too young for a woman in 40s. What are we supposed to wear?

Withtheday · 02/11/2024 08:05

Positivenancy · 01/11/2024 18:41

sometimes I feel like I do…I’m nearly 40 and I wear jeans, hoodies, jumpers and converse daily!! Even at work, I’m always told I look like I’m in my 20’s 😅😂😂

I am genuinely taken aback that someone in their 30s thinks jeans, converse and hoodies are ‘young clothes’ for them. I am nearly 52 and wear this regularly ( though more regularly combat style trousers than jeans) and it has never occurred to me than this is anything other than an entirely bog standard normal way to dress.

Totally agree, I think that’s totally normal- people don’t get to 50 and start wearing twin sets these days!

My dad is in his 70s and wears jeans & band T-shirts - it’s what he’s always worn, why should he stop now?

Errors · 02/11/2024 08:14

Jeans hoodies and converse in your 40s is fine. As is any type of clothing whatever your age.
i would wear what 20 year olds wear simply because I don’t like it

I honestly couldn’t care less whether anyone thought a hoodie looked ‘sloppy’ 😂

I’m 46, I was wearing my Glastonbury hoodie, leggings and trainers yesterday and I will continue to do so.

I think the issue would lay solely with the weirdos giving the looks, not the person wearing whatever clothes they want.

GoldMoon · 02/11/2024 08:23

Maybe - If you went out wearing the sort of clothes worn by the women who appeared on mafs UK and you are nearing 50 , but if you think you can still rock it , who am I to judge !

Umm here on this very thread..?

Because it's a thread asking for our opinion.

You can't have people you think look good and dress well without then also having people that you think don't can you.
You can of course be completely indifferent. Which is great but I think the majority of people clock what others wear.

It certainly is in my circle. But I think there's huge variation based on where you live, your lifestyle and peers as to what you think is 'normal'. I'm often really surprised at the outfits recommended on the style and beauty board for different things. Like 40s women advised to wear midi dresses and wedge sandals to night clubs, or silk shirts from mint velvet to gigs. Or do some odd tweak to an outfit to make it 'age appropriate' like wearing a cardigan or blazer to a venue where you'd be boiling in seconds.
Where I go those things would make you stick out like a sore thumb. Older people typically just wear a bit more understated and less revealing version of whatever young people wear, not a special uniform from specific shops targeted to them. But I accept that their suggestions may be what people do in their circles.

Saschka · 02/11/2024 08:31

Elliebobhobnob · 01/11/2024 19:25

I don't personally believe in dressing too young.

But I'm 40 and it is something I worry about. I wear all sorts of clothes, dresses, jeans, joggers, boots, trainers, converse, knitwear, hoodies. I tend to avoid big logos or anything that's both short and tight. I'm definitely a casual dresser but do wear floaty skirts and dresses in Summer.

My teenage son told me I dress young for my age and he told dh that a pack of t-shirts was 'too young for him and that he should remember he's 40.

That is just your teenaged son being embarrassed by you for existing. Of course men over 40 can wear T-shirts ffs.

I’m not a big fan of the “adult women in primary-coloured dungarees” look, but that is because they look like Mr Tumble. Up to them though.

Same age, and I don’t actually think there’s an issue with looking “sloppy” if I’m working from home! Leggings and a hoody are comfortable and warm. I wear smart trousers or a dress to work when I’m patient-facing or in a meeting.

I switched to pearls and twinsets on the eve of my 30th birthday and haven't looked back.

Your comment made me smile. I was in a very fancy young boutique recently in Europe and there was a few twin-sets.

@Elliebobhobnob If you like something wear it. People genuinely look better when comfortable and feel authentic.

friendconcern · 02/11/2024 08:41

Petrine · 01/11/2024 21:49

Of course a person can wear whatever they like but that doesn’t mean they look good in what they’re wearing.

The OP asked whether you can dress too young for your age… in my opinion they can. I used that woman as an example because she really did look ridiculous… her choice but that doesn’t alter my opinion of it.

I think that sounds amazing. I saw someone wearing something similar a little while ago, she looked to be in her 60s / early 70s. People were going up to her all night to tell her how fabulous she looked (and she did). So maybe it’s not the age but the general ‘look’ or maybe it’s in the eye of the beholder?

Mines 64 and looks hot AF in a hoodie or shirt with Tshirt underneath.
