Can you dress too young for your age?

Can you dress too young for your age, and if so how would you define dressing too young?

It could be a man or woman.

I'm interested to know how someone would describe a person dressing too young.

OP posts:

I was going to post a similar thread the other day. Basically, I’ve always dressed “young”. Think
leggings, sport socks, false eyelashes. Walked past a group of young twenty-somethings dressed identically but looked a million times better and it felt like a lightbulb moment. I’m currently swapping clothes on Vinted because I no longer feel comfortable in my clothes. I’m trying to dress a lot softer if that makes sense.

The difference between this and a lot of the other posts is that you have made your own decision that you no longer feel comfortable and confident In Your clothes of choice.

Whereas a lot of the other posts here involve younger women telling older women they don’t have the right to feel comfortable and confident in their clothes of choice.

MotherofPearl · 01/11/2024 21:04

Obviously people can wear whatever they want, but I do think that - for myself at least - styles and fabrics that I could wear when I was 20 would look ridiculous on me now (50). I'd feel very silly in tiny body con dresses, strappy tops and low rise jeans.

I also think that as I've grown older I've generally wanted to wear better cut, more structured clothing in good quality fabrics. I can certainly afford much better quality clothes now. And a tiny stretchy mini dress wouldn't be terribly forgiving on my 50 year old self, even though my size has remained fairly consistent.

Bixterret · 01/11/2024 21:09

I'll still wear an above the knee skirt (with tights) and I'm 72.

henlake7 · 01/11/2024 21:19

Sounds like some people are incredibly restrictive with their wardrobe choices to me. Surely if you love wearing something at 20 you are still allowed to love it at 50?

To me dressing too young would translate as dressing like a toddler or child, anything else is fair game IMO!
Personally in my 20s I took zero care of myself and was clinically obese and looked terrible, I finally have the figure I've always wanted now in my 50s and i plan on making the most of it! 😀

Young person judges older person.

Older person knows life is too short and none of this matters.

Young person still caught up in all the hideous insecurities that hold women back when young.

I’m not a young person, I’m 69.

Bartcla · 01/11/2024 20:44

I assume she liked the dress. Why do we ‘have’ to wear something flattering rather than just wearing clothes we like?

Of course a person can wear whatever they like but that doesn’t mean they look good in what they’re wearing.

The OP asked whether you can dress too young for your age… in my opinion they can. I used that woman as an example because she really did look ridiculous… her choice but that doesn’t alter my opinion of it.

Ponoka7 · 01/11/2024 19:32

Generally, no. There's some styles of trainers/boots that I think are a bit too young for me (nearly 60), but I only reject them because there's enough to chose from that I like. There's dresses from 'Oh Polly' that I would say are probably left to the under 40's. I think that some styles of suit are more for men under 40. There's more refined ways to look good. But actual clothing, trainers, converse, minis etc, is ageless these days.
@ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood should we really consider sayings from the 1800's as a guide to modern life?

Some remain true, such as the mutton one and 'just because you can, doesn't mean you shoul'!

Wow. And you’re STILL judging other women for something that doesn’t remotely impact you?

why?

Why? See the title of the thread.

I am joining in the discussion. I am entitled to my opinion. People have differing opinions on everything in life. You don’t seem to think that’s the case.

I didn’t say you had to stop. I just can’t understand why any woman wouldn’t reach a point in her life where she doesn’t have the lightbulb moment that all the Cosmoplitan magazine messages around what you “should” wear are all created by a fashion industry who design it in a way to make you feel inadequate if you dont fit some weird societal norm, just so you spend more on clothes.

As long as woman is comfortable and feel confident in what they’re wearing and aren’t wearing anything illegal then maybe just let them be..?

Caswallonthefox · 01/11/2024 22:09

In my humble opinion, dressing too young involves wearing clothes that do not work with your body shape. I.e wearing a mini skirt or hotpants when your legs have more cellulite than muscle. Although I'm not gonna tell you that you look like shit because you do you.
I have no idea whether I dress to young for my age, nor do I care. I mostly wear bright coloured leggings (currently wearing ones with cats on), long t shirts with jumpers if cold and a maroon newsboy hat and poncho if out and about.
If I'm mutton dressed as lamb I care not.

Absolutely. Such a shame to suck all the joy out of the harmless pleasure of women wearing clothes they like, by imposing all these rules and judgements.

Lyannaa · 01/11/2024 22:13

Yes

Petrine · 01/11/2024 22:18

@Tiredalwaystired

You seem to have theories which just don’t stack up. You can’t assume that people are going to consider a situation and come to the same conclusion as you. Everyone’s opinions are different… unless you have a totally hive mind.

The OP asked a simple question. I gave my opinion on the topic which you don’t agree with. That’s fine.

Pipsquiggle · 01/11/2024 22:22

There are very few people who in their middle age look good in the type of clothes that they wore in their early 20s. Styles have moved on and their bodies have changed.

However, I do believe that people should wear whatever they want to wear - wear it confidently and this is usually enough.

People will always judge others, if this bothers you, maybe get advice from a friend who you feel dresses well and ask for pointers

HausofHolbein · 01/11/2024 23:07

This was the best post on this thread:

@Disturbia81

"One day we'll be cold and dead in the ground.

It is utterly and unarguably true.

People need to do what they need, dress how suits them and sod everyone else.

Likewise, if you judge someone, you are wasting valuable moments of your life you will never get back.

Wellingtonspie · 01/11/2024 23:10

I duno the neighbour was complaining about a “40 something year old” out trick or treating with her arse hanging her shorts as if she was a teenager.

So I guess they certainly believe so. I also wouldn’t go out with my arse hanging out and I’m in my 30’s. Think that’s very much a teen or influencer gym bunny thing.

Jumpingthruhoops · 01/11/2024 23:38

Positivenancy · 01/11/2024 18:41

sometimes I feel like I do…I’m nearly 40 and I wear jeans, hoodies, jumpers and converse daily!! Even at work, I’m always told I look like I’m in my 20’s 😅😂😂

Ditto. Pretty much wear this too plus bikers jackets and boots with either jeans or a dress. I know I don't look anywhere near my age - however I wouldn't suddenly change my style even if I did.

Jumpingthruhoops · 01/11/2024 23:52

Guardian12 · 01/11/2024 19:36

I have to admit I hate when men in their 40’s or older still try and look trendy or wear things like hoodies. It gives me the ick.

Are you joking? My DH is nearing 48, still wears hoodies and/or shirt jackets and a T-shirt under, with jeans or chinos. He's in good shape and still looks great.

pinkpjamas1 · 02/11/2024 00:01

OneBadKitty · 01/11/2024 19:52

The way you dress sounds like nothing to do with age- I can't think of any young women who dress like that! I think if I saw you I would just think you had no taste or lacked class rather than dressed too young!

Thank you, maybe I don't? I'm post grad educated and a clinician/tutor who knows she's a good person. I wear what I feel good in.

You may think that about me if you caught me at an event but if you take the time to speak to people maybe you'll find you judged them a little incorrectly.

I will add, I'd never dress to teach, or whenever it was totally inappropriate, in the sort of attire I described. I know how to behave. But on my down time yes, I'll wear what I bliddy well want.🙂

pinkpjamas1 · 02/11/2024 00:05

Laiste · 01/11/2024 20:36

See, this thigh high boot and short skirt and v neck top thing - this is not a 'young' outfit in my mind. You don't see teens or 20 somethings wandering about in thigh high boots and mini skirts Confused

They're all in baggy bottoms with cropped tops (again) round here. It's all about the midrift.

The thigh boot thing and mini skirt thing - when was that actually in fashion?

I've never cared for trends if I'm honest. Assuming this is aimed at me. However I have been told I dress too young more than several times both online and in person.

Fuck off with your ageist shit. Everyone should be free to wear what they want. Who died and made you Fashion Führer?

Because who wants to have an interesting discussion about the question in the OP when you can just abuse someone and shut them down

This! ^

I have to admit, I cringe so hard when I see a woman middle aged or older with hair dyed blue, or pink. It just looks so incredibly naff - and a bit sad, and is quite ageing. (IMO.)

A woman I know who is 54 has (had) dark blonde/light brown hair, and she looked 4-5 years younger than her age... Then she dyed it pink. Aged her 10 years. I don't 'get' why women do this when they get to around their mid to late 40s/their 50s. Never had coloured hair before, and just decide to do it pink or blue. Desperate attempt to recapture a youth they never had or something...? Trying to look 'edgy' and 'cool....?' Midlife crisis???

I don't know. And yes I know it's got fuck-all to do with me, and women can jolly well do what they want, but it's an open message forum, and I'm entitled to my view. And my view is that it looks ludicrous. And I agree with @cantthinkofausername26 that it's a bit 'try-hard.'

Yes I know you don't care what I think. You don't need to tell me.

Disagree with this!

There is a “gran” at my DDs school, her hair is an amazing vibrant pink or red colour, she looks fab, it suits her. I can’t imagine any natural colour making her look any younger.

I spent many years changing my hair colour, but anyone who has known me in the last 15-20 years only knows a very plain natural hair colour and boring styles on me as first I wasn’t allowed bold colours in work then I had children and my hair wasn’t a priority. I added a bit of pink a couple of years ago but wasn’t overly keen because I no longer go out much and style my hair, it spends most of its time in a ponytail or bun.

I actually envy women who go full on with their hair colours. But I do think there is a line with clothing styles were there are some clothes only suited for the young.
