Can you dress too young for your age?

Can you dress too young for your age, and if so how would you define dressing too young?

It could be a man or woman.

I'm interested to know how someone would describe a person dressing too young.

sometimes I feel like I do…I’m nearly 40 and I wear jeans, hoodies, jumpers and converse daily!! Even at work, I’m always told I look like I’m in my 20’s 😅😂😂

Changingplace · 01/11/2024 18:41

No, clothes are down to the individual, I don’t think age has anything to do with it.

KingOfPeace · 01/11/2024 18:42

I think possibly cheap ill fitting clothes may work better on young bodies and aesthetics but I honestly think not really. Wear what you like. So many older women I know seem to be getting into cartoon sweaters, I have assumed they were a young people's thing but that's me not them.

Comedycook · 01/11/2024 18:43

I switched to pearls and twinsets on the eve of my 30th birthday and haven't looked back.

Cocolapew · 01/11/2024 18:45

Yes.

Yes.

😂😂😂

ChillysWaterBottle · 01/11/2024 18:56

If you're wearing a baby onesie then yeah.

Otherwise no. Dress how you like/feel comfortable.

Meadowfinch · 01/11/2024 18:58

No, I don't think so. I know an 82yo lady who still runs park run and she wears the neatest and best fitting jeans with a slim-hipped wiggle.

Wear clothes that suit your lifestyle

Caffeineismydrug35 · 01/11/2024 18:59

Life is too short to care about these things. When I’m not working I live in tracksuits and trainers in a range of colours. Sadly, my face still shows my age so no one is mistaking me for a twenty something! I also often buy teen clothes and shoes because I’m short and they often fit better.

screamtoabloodysigh · 01/11/2024 18:59

I'd like to say no, but if I had my hair scraped back; false eyelashes; montirex top Nike pro shorts and crocs on, I would feel like I'm dressing too young.

But then, there are lots of mini goths around at the minute, which was my style and still something i dip into. So am I suddenly dressing too young there? Or does that not count because it's all, essentially, theatre?

VioletCrawleyForever · 01/11/2024 19:00

Age is just a number.

Wear whatever you like and enjoy.

NeelyOHara1 · 01/11/2024 19:00

I think as long as it's "casual" young rather than "dressing up" young you should be fine, lol.

AuntieStella · 01/11/2024 19:00

Of course you can't!!

It's just lazy and ageist stereotyping.

Better to look in your mirror and wear what you feel terrific in, than adopt arbitrary "rules" based on how many candles on your last birthday cake

Cocolapew · 01/11/2024 18:45

Yes.

So stunning. So brave.

Mutton dressed as lamb is an adage worth considering

Yes but what is mutton dressed as lamb?

It's a misogynistic and ageist slur aimed at making women feel bad about themselves and lose confidence in their appearance. Because we need more of those, obviously.

Yes but what is mutton dressed as lamb?

It's from days of yore when butchers were selling mutton (tougher meat from sheep over 2 years old, I think), but dressing it up wiith various herbs, etc, to make it look like lamb
'The origin of the idiom "mutton dressed as lamb" can be traced back to the 17th century in England. In those times, mutton was a term used to refer to the meat of an older sheep, which was considered to be of lower quality and less desirable than lamb, the meat of a younger sheep. The idiom likely originated from the practice of trying to pass off the inferior mutton as the more desirable lamb.'
'Over time, the idiom evolved to take on a figurative meaning, referring to someone who is trying to appear younger or more attractive than they actually are, much like trying to pass off mutton as lamb. The idiom has since become a popular way to discourage someone from engaging in a particular activity or to criticize someone's appearance or behavior.'

I wear clothes that on paper would be considered way too young for me. I am firmly convinced they look fine and suit me, so I'm going to carry on until I think otherwise, or my very honest adult DD tips me the wink.

NeelyOHara1 · 01/11/2024 19:16

I like the "mutton dressed as ram", counter, lol.

No, clothes are down to the individual, I don’t think age has anything to do with it.

I think that's the issue though. Lots of people tend to wear " the trend" which varies by age. They often don't dress like individuals.
I think if you wear whatever the current fashion is for a different age it looks wrong.

Elliebobhobnob · 01/11/2024 19:25

I don't personally believe in dressing too young.

But I'm 40 and it is something I worry about. I wear all sorts of clothes, dresses, jeans, joggers, boots, trainers, converse, knitwear, hoodies. I tend to avoid big logos or anything that's both short and tight. I'm definitely a casual dresser but do wear floaty skirts and dresses in Summer.

My teenage son told me I dress young for my age and he told dh that a pack of t-shirts was 'too young for him and that he should remember he's 40.

I know a 45yo who wears Minnie Mouse pink sweaters, I find it a bit too much (although this is coupled with other "childish" things she does, she has had a fair but if trauma and Peter Pan syndrome, so that may play a part of my thinking....)
But otherwise, generally I don't think so...

SoporificLettuce · 01/11/2024 19:26

Have you never heard the saying
“mutton dressed as lamb” ?

yes, yes you can dress too young!

bengalcat · 01/11/2024 19:28

It’s a no from me
