to wonder why gynaecologists are usually male?

A week after a gynae op I have been experiencing pain while peeing - went to see my gynae about it and he persistently called it "discomfort" grrr Then he diagnosed it as "probably butterflies" WTF? I don't get butterflies while peeing!

Friends have reported similar stories. Why are they men and why can't they simply assume we are not hysterical hypochondrics unless there are good grounds to believe otherwise.

Aren't most consultants male?

And I find consultants are generally fairly dismissive unless there is a threatening heaLTh condition. They want to treat the serious stuff, I think, and leave GPs to piss about with aches, twinges, vague pains and all that niggly stuff

Doodle2U · 25/04/2008 17:28

I've often wondered what makes a gynae want to become a gynae in the first place - do they wake up one morning and think - "Women's bits.....that's the job for me - No Muff To Tough".

hmmmm!

RosaLuxembourg · 25/04/2008 17:35

I have often wondered this myself.

Having worked with a quite a few and without wanting to generalise too much.... in lots of cases, went to all boys schools and unmarried..or married and unfaithful or downright weird and misogynist. Almost without exception completely and utterly up themselves.

Blu · 25/04/2008 17:41

Not up their patients?

mum3sons, what a wonderful insight!

wildhorses · 25/04/2008 17:45

Thought about this be4
(usually while lying there with the gynae between me legs)

Could you imagine been married to one and the converstations "Good day at the office darling "
"you`ll never guess what I saw 2day...."

Monkeybird · 25/04/2008 17:45

I imagine it's because there is so little knowledge and research into how women's bits really work, that they think they can forge out a glorious career down there. So to speak.

Do you think their wives make them wash their hands when they get through the door though?

wildhorses · 25/04/2008 17:47

SHIT SHIT and f**king
Ive burnt dh dinner cos been reading this thread and thinking about gynaes
How do explain that one
LOOks like a takeaway now

pointydog · 25/04/2008 17:48

oh madam, it looks like a takeaway down here

sparklyfairypie · 25/04/2008 17:50

aaaargh am nervous about my gynae appt now

PeachesMcLean · 25/04/2008 17:51

I was wondering exactly the same earlier today. How do men end up with that as a specialism? I dread to think...

Upwind · 25/04/2008 17:52

Thanks all for cheering me up.

Another question, why do they shape the end of the probe for internal scans like the end of a man's knob? Is it to help us relax?

Still fuming. Never heard of anyone finding going for a pee so exciting it gave them butterflies.

And just realised that HYSTERIA is most likely derived from the same origin as HYSTERscopy, or HYSTERectomy and so clearly objectionable !

LazyLinePainterJane · 25/04/2008 17:54

LOL at "No muff too tough"

wildhorses · 25/04/2008 17:55

Its when they say now just relax a woman gynae would`nt say that

I want to shout would you relax with that inside ya????

Mercy · 25/04/2008 17:56

Prestige, glory, many women thanking you for helping them.

For the oppposite reasons to gerontology (so I am told)

CoteDAzur · 25/04/2008 18:05

The few gynecologists I have seen were terrible.

At least men respect the fanjo and have experience handling it. Women gynecologists are brutal ime.

mum2sons · 25/04/2008 18:07

The bow tie's are to stop normal ties flapping up ones fanjo ..seriously..

I have heard of a tie being accidently inserted with a speculum. The gynae didnt notice apparantly!..

SubRosa · 25/04/2008 18:09

I've been lucky (if that's the right word?) and have found a decent gynae. Despite being a bow-tie wearer he's v sympathetic and almost normal
