to wonder why gynaecologists are usually male?

A week after a gynae op I have been experiencing pain while peeing - went to see my gynae about it and he persistently called it "discomfort" grrr Then he diagnosed it as "probably butterflies" WTF? I don't get butterflies while peeing!

Friends have reported similar stories. Why are they men and why can't they simply assume we are not hysterical hypochondrics unless there are good grounds to believe otherwise.

Most gynaecologists are male because most senior doctors are male.

Hysterectomy etc do actually come from Hysteria from an age when these type of ops were done to reduce women's apparant hysteria( proba6ly menopausal changes!)

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 25/04/2008 22:40

Upwind - In Victorian times the "cure" for hysteria used to consist of the male doctor giving the hysterical woman an orgasm by stimulating her clitoris.

I have had a very good male and a dreadful female gynae (the latter gave me a smear at 21 weeks pg, without my consent, knowing I had placenta praevia, and caused a significant bleed .

berolina · 25/04/2008 22:43

did a smear. (gave me a smear - wtf?)

expatinscotland · 25/04/2008 22:43

the best gynae i had was brilliant, fantastic and male.

and gay.

i worked with him and the nurses and female consultants all used him.

i don't care about gender as long as they treat me seriously.

emma1977 · 25/04/2008 22:48

Most gynaecologists are male because its a surgical speciality, which is the medical equivalent of being a mechanic.

pointydog · 25/04/2008 23:13

lol emma

paddycat · 26/04/2008 08:26

lol - fanny mechanic?!

GrapefruitMoon · 26/04/2008 08:30

I know of someone who married her sister's gynae..... now that made me go ewwww

kickassangel · 26/04/2008 08:40

I had one say to a trainee doctor 'press as hard as you like on the patient, you won't hurt her'! How wrong they were

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2008 08:43

Women have better things to do than look up each other's fannies

Fillyjonk · 26/04/2008 08:51

from what I understand of it, training to be a consultant takes ages, and is virtually impossible to combine with family life.

once you are there I think it isn't too bad but the training takes ages

I have a friend who finished medical school but never qualified as any sort of doctor for this reason

Othersideofthechannel · 26/04/2008 08:53

Aren't most urologists male as well? As someone said, most consultants are male.

It may also be because of the hours. Most births do not take place at an appointed time unlike hip operations.

I know a female gynaecologist but she chose to work in family planning is was more compatible with family.

I think the majority of obstetrics & gynaecology trainees are female so in time there will be more female consultants.

IME some male gynaes are lovely people who are geuninely interested in female problems, some are failed surgeons and a few are mysogynistic shits who get a kick out of being able to tell women to undress and then stick instruments up them.....

mehdismummy · 26/04/2008 09:02

lol at no muff to tough! Lol at whole thread tbh! My friend once in preparation to go and see gynae put some nice smelling stuff down on her fanjo. Well as the dr was examing her he said it was nice of you to make the effort but you did not have to bother! When she was cleaning up she found instead of putting the special stuff she had brought she had put on the glitter cream that she had brought for clubbing! Her fanjo was all sparkly!

mum2sons · 26/04/2008 10:50

IIRC there is only one woman specialising in male urology in the UK. Considering that 50% of medics are now female you would think that there would be more female gynae's. Look at Wendy Savage and see what happens to women in Obs and Gynae..

Also steroypes in all kinds of medicine. Othopods are usually v masculine and quite arrogant. Anaesthetists are usually kindhearted and not so up themselves etc etc.
Gynae's usually the only way they can get near a fanjo..

at treatment for hysteria!

oldraver · 24/03/2009 16:25

I know this is an old thread but I had not seen it originally

I think I now need an urologist

slug · 24/03/2009 16:29

My neighbour is a gynae. He describes himself as a "Fanny mechanic" Niiiiice

AnyFucker · 24/03/2009 16:35

I had a female gynae once

she was an utter bitch, sat there eating xmas cake during my infertility consultation (I was terribly upset) and told me "if I just put a bit of meat on, I would be up the duff quick-smart"

that was 15 yrs ago, and I would still love to punch her lights out
