What age did you first take your DC trick or treating?

This is not intended to be a debate about truck or treating and how people feel about it (purely because I can't be arsed with that 😂).

I'm interested to hear from those whose children partake in trick or treating - at what age did you first take them? My DD is 3 and a half, I haven't taken her this year as I feel it's a tad too young... but I could be wrong! Obviously next year she will be 4.5 - is that a good age to start?

Thanks! 🎃

When he started school. He was the oldest in the year so almost 5

SnowSnow · 31/10/2024 17:20

My little one is 12 months and I’m taking him to knock on a few friends houses down our street but it’s more for me to be honest!

mondaytosunday · 31/10/2024 17:29

Three is fine! Four for sure. I think 8 is probably getting on a bit and definitely not after age ten.

Lavenderlights · 31/10/2024 17:30

Age 2, went with friends. 3.5 definitely old enough! 😊

Procrastinates · 31/10/2024 17:30

He was almost 2. He had a brilliant time. I would definitely say a 3.5 year old would be old enough to enjoy it.

Sparrow7 · 31/10/2024 17:31

2

Whatsitreallylike · 31/10/2024 17:31

My 2.5 YO wanted to go this year, but she’s not very well. Next year we’re definitely going.

LizzoBennett · 31/10/2024 17:32

It's my DS's first time tonight. He's almost 4.

trickortreating · 31/10/2024 17:36

Ah I feel like I should have taken her this evening reading these replies! It's difficult though as she's always really tired after nursery and her bath and bed window is 6-7, so we'd need to squash it in before then. I'll definitely take her next year!

I think about 3 yrs to neighbours and immediate family. So many cute costumes now , sadly none when he was wee .I've so little talent for this stuff

VioletCrawleyForever · 31/10/2024 17:39

Guising when they were about 4

Createausername1970 · 31/10/2024 17:40

DS was a very active toddler who didn't nap, so he was asleep by 6.00 most nights, earlier just after the clocks changed as it took him a bit of time to adjust.

So trick and treating wasn't something that was on his radar until about Y1/Y2 - so age 5/6. For the first couple of years we did people we knew only, so he was about 7/8 before we fully did it.

The reason I kept it low key was because he was ND and as far as he was concerned, if the lady with the blue door 3 streets away gave him sweets one time, then he could knock another time and she would give sweets again. I needed to make sure he "got" trick and treating, and that it was Halloween only, not a general invitation to expect sweets.

EllaPaella · 31/10/2024 17:41

I've got three boys from 9-22. The eldest was around 4 when we started trick or treating but the younger two would have been toddlers coming along with older brother/s. We've always gone with with their friends and parents as a group. This year is the first year the youngest one only is going 😢

SouthLondonMum22 · 31/10/2024 17:42

Took DS for the first time tonight at almost 2.

?? 10 is too old? 10 year olds like sweets and fun too you know.

Mine are 8.5 and 11 have both gone out this year and I can't see them not wanting to go next year

BabyCloud · 31/10/2024 17:47

I have never taken my daughter and she is a teenager. I don’t mind kids knocking at ours though and always have sweets ready.

We usually carve pumpkins and watching Hocus Pocus instead but she’s at her friends for a party this year so it’s a solo takeaway for me.

10 is fine. I've just had a group of teens who can't have been younger than 15 all dressed up. If you say trick or treat, dress up and are having fun and are not being a twit that's enough to get a sweet out of me.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 31/10/2024 17:48

I plan to take my son after he’s three because I think that’s the age where he could eat most sweets safely. Younger than that and a lot of sweets are a chocking hazard. My little boy is only 16 months old and I don’t even really let him have sugar yet so going this year would be pretty pointless. If he had an older sibling we might all go together though.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 31/10/2024 17:55

DS is 5 and it was his first time today.

He is autistic though and didn't understand that you knock, wait, say trick or treat, grab one, and say happy Halloween and find the next spooky decorated house.

Instead we knocked on the first door and he walked away and said, wow I love knocking on doors. 🤦‍♀️ We basically got chased down the driveway with a bowl of sweets.

Got the hang of it in the end.

Martymcfly24 · 31/10/2024 18:02

Once they can walk they can go to the next door neighbors so one? Then further as they get older.

Loads cute toddlers calling here as well as some fab clever homemade costumes on the older kids. (Up to 13/14)

My dd 6 is also autistic so we spent the last couple of nights practicing on the different doors in the house saying trick or treat and putting something in ger bucket.. DH just texted to say she is doing brilliant so I'm delighted!

SuspiciousAloysius · 31/10/2024 18:05

When she was three we went out but only did a couple of houses plus my mum’s. The following year she started going in a group with the neighbour kids.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 31/10/2024 18:25

DD was two but she was born on an island close to the US so it was almost mandatory!

DiscoBeat · 31/10/2024 18:28

I don't think we took them until the oldest was about 5. The younger one obviously went earlier. Before that we used to go to a fancy dress kiddie disco at a soft play in a nearby village, which was lovely.

🤣🤣🤣 at 10 they get to go guising with their pals instead of their parents.
