What age did you first take your DC trick or treating?

This is not intended to be a debate about truck or treating and how people feel about it (purely because I can't be arsed with that 😂).

I'm interested to hear from those whose children partake in trick or treating - at what age did you first take them? My DD is 3 and a half, I haven't taken her this year as I feel it's a tad too young... but I could be wrong! Obviously next year she will be 4.5 - is that a good age to start?

Thanks! 🎃

From their first Halloween. One was 4 m the other 9 m. It was only close friends and family and eas more for the pics than anything else. It made the grandparents happy.

CandiedPrincess · 31/10/2024 18:45

DS was two, well nearer three than two. He loved it and everyone loved seeing him toddle around in his little costume.

Took DD for the first time tonight. She's 4 (just started reception). I'd happily have avoided it due to the social embarrassment of knocking on strangers doors without a song to offer (Scot living in England), but she's picked up the idea from somewhere and was desperate to go. We went to a friend's house first then she was eventually brave enough to try a neighbor's door. After that there was no stopping her. Been good for her maths though "I've got 8 sweets, after the next one I'll have nine. Or ten if they let me have two!"

Our eldest is almost 3, doesn't eat candies and still has loads of fun just handing out treats to the kids, so we felt it wasn't worth it this year.
We will take him next year, and his sister then who will be about 2.5. We'll probably stay in our street so about 10 houses to keep it simple.

We've had children knocking on the door who looked 2.5-3, most with older siblings.

Very much depends on your child. Are they prone to nightmares?

Tadpolecat · 31/10/2024 21:22

On his first halloween (9 months) we joined in with trick or treating in the buggy watching his cousins. Last year he properly took part (21 months). Now he's nearly 3 and he got it more this year. He loved joining in with his cousins and was saying thank you to those who gave him sweets. We probably wouldn't have done it yet if he didn't have older cousins to go with, but certainly not too young!

DD1 first went trick or treating last year, so 2 months shy of 4 years old.
DD2 came with us in her pram aged 18 months and wore a costume.

They've both been out tonight with DH and me too at almost 5 and 2.5 years old.

I think the youngest we had come to our door tonight was about 2. They were very cute and were trying to give me their sweets.

VestaTilley · 31/10/2024 21:40

5 for DS - he loved it!

Bunnycat101 · 31/10/2024 21:43

You can build it up so when they’re very little a couple of houses of neighbours you know so it’s not totally overwhelming and then their stamina and tolerance builds up each year. My 5 year old had an absolute blast this year, last year she enjoyed it but didn’t have the same tolerance for the dark or distance as her older sister and year before she did some but couldn’t go very far (much to the irritation of the older one). This year with 5 and 8 has been the best.

Luddite26 · 31/10/2024 21:45

It was my first time ages 52 and I took 6y old GS and 2 year old GS and 8 months old in pushchair!
I have never participated but last year we carved a pumpkin and this year dh grew some big pumpkins so we have had a Halloween festival this week decorating and carving and went trick or treating tonight.
And everyone who decorated and joined in were so heartwarming. Going to make a bigger effort next year

My son can't believe I have done this I was so anti the Americanisation of it all I used to carve a swede for them !

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/10/2024 21:50

I think it all depends on the child and the situation, and probably what else you happen to be up to. Younger siblings will in all likelihood get dragged out in their pram so the eldest can trick or treat!

Saying 10 is too old is incredibly miserable though! I wouldn’t think anything of seeing 13/14 yos trick or treating - let them be kids as long as they want. If they’re doing it in a fun spirit rather than intimidating anyone, what’s the harm?

I have a 16 yo who hasn’t fancied it for the past few years, so whilst she was probably last out in 2019 that would be more because it didn’t happen in 2020/21 than because I think 11 is a cut off.

Edit - said 16 yo is my eldest and we first went out when she was 3 - my younger one is 10 and I’m sure will still want to be out next year!

unicornpower · 31/10/2024 21:51

We went tonight and mine are 3 and 18months, eldest had a great time once she got her confidence to knock! Shes been practising saying trick or treat, it was very cute. All the older kids were so kind to her and said how cool her costume was (sparkly witch). She said she had lots of fun so 3 definitely isn’t too young!

kikisparks · 31/10/2024 21:51

DD’s first time tonight, just turned 3, she had a blast.

No she's not. She a very chilled, easy going 3 year old tbh. I'm quite lucky in that respect!

*trick or treating, not truck, obviously 😂

There is actually a thing called truck or treating! It’s where people park up in a designated spot often a car park with decorated cars and hand out candy (don’t think it has reached the uk but apparently it is getting bigger in the states)
