£3 busfares will ruin me

Deportationsensation · 30/10/2024 14:56

Busfare cap to increase to £3. That’s £6 a day for buses. £10 extra a week.

My food budget for 1 person is £10 a week. So that’s my food money gone to pay for buses.

I can’t work more hours. I do what I can in working part time because I have health issues that would not qualify for PIP but affect me every day. Not qualifying for any benefits other than probably food bank use. Which I will now have to do.

AIBU to just start wondering what is the point? Life isn’t supposed to be like this. Some of us are just trying to survive with no enjoyment in life at all.

So it's not even long term, it's just a few weeks? You could earn the extra in that time doing online surveys.

3 months isn't a few weeks

AutumnLeaves24 · 30/10/2024 16:29

BIossomtoes · 30/10/2024 15:29

How did you pay your bus fares before the cap was introduced?

@blossomtoes

probably the same way many others could afford to buy things they can't now, before ever god damn thing else went up!!

BabyCloud · 30/10/2024 16:35

Some councils are going to keep the cap. You can also apply for a free bus pass for some disabilities through them too if you search your local website or give them a call.

The cap was due to be lifted in December (at least where I live) so the £3 is still way cheaper than it used to be. Day or weekly tickets often work out cheaper.

Are you certain you aren’t entitled to benefits? £10 a week is impossible to live on. That can’t be doing your health any good.

Runssometimes · 30/10/2024 16:38

I’m sorry OP, I can’t understand why fuel duty didn’t go up. Why rail fares and bus fares increase but we subside drivers to the tune of billions. Ridiculous.

Is cycling to work a possibility?

Serencwtch · 30/10/2024 16:40

I am in a rural area & without the cap a single was £5.40 & return £8 so the cap is vital.

I think it's great they have kept the cap & increased it slightly rather than getting rid of it when it was due to end in December.

murasaki · 30/10/2024 16:42

ManchesterLu · 30/10/2024 16:21

Yeah, in the same way tuition fees are "capped", but they all charge the highest amount possible.

Well that's just not true. London bus fares are 1.75. And if you get two within an hour the second is free.

Tuition fees are a different thing, placing yourself lower than the cap brands you as a lower tier university, so understandable some that should have done that, didn't.

@Runssometimes

Fuel is already very expensive & will go up again due to global issues.

whatever you bus fare is, why do you think you're subsiding drivers??

I'm sorry to hear this OP

It really does show what a load of old shite net zero and the massive budget given to the lunatic Miliband to take us all back to the stone age is.

If he and his sixth former colleagues believed in it, believed that we must all suffer to bring about net zero, then making bus and train travel dirt cheap or even free would be a priority.

But of course they won't because despite hysterical yelling from Ms Thunberg et al, the whole net zero is a con that makes people like Miliband richer and people like the OP poorer.

Write to the twat and ask him if he will give you a lift in his fuel guzzling government or personal vehicles. Of course, he may not be in-he may be off flying to a climate change conference. Maybe his planes fly on pink farts and so are totally green.

Net Zero means, 'Give me a big budget to spunk up the wall and increase heating bills while making public transport more difficult to access.'

Of course, Net Zero is the new religion and people get quite angry if anyone speaks against the creed but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Because surely, if the situation was as dire as we are told, then even our dimwits at the helm, could see that making public transport more difficult to access is not the way to help it.

I suppose some quite angry or patronising people will come along to explain how Net Zero is perfectly compatible with keeping people on the road. Crack on and fill your boots.

Surely you're entitled to UC if you have £10 a week for food?

£10 a week for a balanced diet and basic needs is not sustainable.

£10 a week for a balanced diet and basic needs is not sustainable.

I think the OP made a typo.

We were on the same thread the day before yesterday and she said £15 per week.

Can you get a WFH job?

I have two autoimmune diseases and am waiting for an operation. I’m in constant excruciating pain. I also run a business and work 12 hour days. I’ve been in the position of no money v working through pain. I chose to put food on the table and pay my bills.

You need to work more hours. I’m not trying to be cruel, just realistic. Complaining to strangers on the internet won’t change your situation.

Jesus Christ it didn't even take one page

Apparently, OP works as a childminder. You can't fire up Teams and do that from home.

1Yell0w6Sticker7 · 30/10/2024 17:31

Instead of bus, can you use a bicycle ?
Some people give bikes away for free or little money on Facebook Market place, Olio, Gumtree etc

CheshireCat1 · 30/10/2024 17:45

I have a free disability travel pass that I can use on buses and trains due to my health condition. Could you not apply for one of those or you could apply for access to work scheme that can cover travel costs.

Oh the irony! I am guessing Miss Eyre is not happy today.

Have you read the full thread? All is not what it seems.

greenday16B · 30/10/2024 18:09

Maybe she meant 100?

Runssometimes · 30/10/2024 18:18

@AutumnLeaves24

a report from the cabinet office 2009 had these figures

COSTS
Road building and maintenance £9bn
Excess delays £10.9bn
Accidents £8.9bn
Poor air quality £7bn
Physical inactivity £9,8bn
Greenhouse gas emissions £2bn
Water pollution £5bn
Noise pollution £5bn
Total £57.6bn

INCOME
Vehicle excise duty £5.4bn
Fuel duty £24.9bn
Other taxes £17.8bn (VAT on fuel, car sales)
Total £48.1bn

Shortfall £9.5bn/year

and fuel duty has not increased since 2014. Public transport goes up every year. AND active travel infrastructure investment has actually been cut and is literally a fraction of what is spent on road infrastructure,

that’s also before you account for the costs of pollution on health,

remember that E-vehicles generate no VEH but as they are so heavy it’s thought that they damage the roads more which is something we all pay for to repair.
