Spending this much on self-care

Met up with some friends at the weekend, I'd just had a haircut so beauty treatments came up. One of my friends said he spent around £2000 a month on his daughters (19) beauty treatments. She was there so told us what the treatments were
This was for

  • Derma-planing, Micro-needling (only every other month) and a facial
  • Manicure/Hand massage 2x a month
  • Pedicure/foot massage once a month
  • Brow tinting and threading
  • Hair wash/blow dry and treatment (cut every 2nd or 3rd time)
  • Lymphatic drainage massage and facial plus a hydrating body treatment

Now is it just me or is this a massive wtf? She's 19! She doesn't dye her hair or do tans etc. but this seems bloody ridiculous?

AIBU to think this is a crazy amount of treatments and even worse that her dad is paying for it?

I wouldn't personally fund this but if he can afford it and he wants to then it isn't really anyone's business surely?

Oodiks · 30/10/2024 04:07

It’s absurd! He’s spending money on her likes she’s his pampered pet.

My thoughts exactly! His wife (girls stepmum) admitted that she doesn't even spend half of that on beauty treatments!
This girl is working as an admin assistant so she won't even be making that herself!

That seems expensive even for those treatments. Has the dd had serious medical problems though, that sort of massage is recommended post certain surgeries so could be specialist with specialist prices!

Your are the sweetest person! There’s no indication of this, but you’re finding a way to explain the nonsense. Bless.

I an not sure this is "self care" as it seems to be contracted out. Looking back I was extraordinarily attractive at 19 - certainly didn't feel it at the time. I look at photographs and think why didn't I realise? I think I had tweezers, a nail file and a few nail polishes. I might have had some handcream and mascara. I waxed my own legs. I can't imagine funding this level of idiocy for a 19 year old.

As somebody much older now, I dye my own eyebrows, and cut my own fingernails and toenails. My hairdresser tends to my hair which people seem to believe is naturally blonde. Raging allergies mean that I've never had a facial. I also did home IPL treatment to end forever waxing my legs, bleaching my arm hair and shaving my armpits. My only weakness is dermatologists and plastic surgeons with prescriptions and nice sharp syringes and scalpels. You might as well save it for the high maintenance years where there is a tangible difference - the sort of difference a facial couldn't come close to matching, no matter what sort of lymphatic drainage was on offer.

Take 2000 quid a month and put iy in a savings account. Unless the father is absolutely loaded, the 19 year old will be more grateful for a deposit in the future.

But all families are different.

He's already bought her a flat so I doubt that's a concern just seems crazy. And it's not an endless pit of money. He inherited from his parents, basically put it all into his house and his kids (he has a son) getting mortgage free and buying a holiday home. Month to month he uses his salary which isn't ridiculously high.

Does he spend £2k a month on ‘self care’ for his son?

AndyDd · 30/10/2024 05:13

@Oodiks
Don't even go there. The DD got a flat worth about double the sons but they are the same size so it's fine right? It's obvious that in his priorities it's his DD, His wife then his DS.

Ouch

Coolbreezee · 30/10/2024 05:23

That is a LOT of money. I'm inclined to say each to their own - if he can afford it and chooses to spend his money on his DD then it's nobody's business but his. Only thing that bothers me is the favouritism which can't be easy for his DS...but then again ...his dad bought him a flat so my sympathies are muted at best.

Newposter180 · 30/10/2024 05:48

I find this very hard to believe unless there are significantly more treatments. Even at $$ London prices this is nowhere near £2k. Sounds like either this guy is massaging the numbers to sound weirdly generous, the girl is taking the money and spending it on other stuff… or this whole thread is completely fabricated!

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 30/10/2024 05:50

I rotted up the average prices and she must be going to really, really expensive places!
It’s not needed for a girl of that age.
They have beautiful skin already.
I know it’s ‘his’ money but if I was his wife that would put me right off him.
Part of the fun of being young is experimenting with hair and make up. You see it all on TikTok!
He could have bought a Dyson air wrap, decent skincare etc and kept it topped up for her. Not cheap but far better.
At 19, messing about with the skin’s barrier function is not ideal. The best investment he could make in her skin is buying a decent SPF!

OhshutupSimonyounobhead · 30/10/2024 05:59

I think you are too invested in your friends business. It is his money to spend as he wishes.

RichTea90 · 30/10/2024 05:59

Sorry, but WTF.

I agree. I was quickly totting things up in my head and it doesn't add up.
Facial with bells and whistles £200 tops
Manic/pedi (with foot and hand massage included) £100 - and I am being generous here
Full body massage £60-90
Wash and blow £50, wash/cut/blow £160 - again, assuming she goes somewhere like Sassoon.
That's not even a grand in total. I suggest either the bloke is lying or the girl has a drug problem and tells daddy she needs money for "self-care".

KimberleyClark · 30/10/2024 09:59

I find it rather tragic. She’s 19. She’s at the most naturally beautiful time of her life.

PlayDadiFreyr · 30/10/2024 10:04

I think it's generally a bad idea to get children used to a standard of living that you can't guarantee they can afford.

Not only will they have a high baseline for what is "right", but they'll lose out on the satisfaction of earning and treating themselves.

So many rich kids have been messed up by being spoilt. And his poor son!

Then, for women, there's the sense that without a whopping 2k of treatments they don't look or feel right.

I'm planning to save a LOT for my son, but the last thing I'd want is to rob him of the chance to shape his own life by haemorrhaging cash on him like this.

Baital · 30/10/2024 10:07

It's a bit sad that he is telling her that her value is so tied up in her appearance

AndyDd · 30/10/2024 10:50

I think people are underestimating the prices. I went on the girls instagram (curiosity really got the better of me). She had tagged nails/hair and that was looking like £300-£350. Let's be sure here that she is going to most overpriced instagramable places!
I do think the £2000 is high but he might have included other things like buying make up and skincare or was just massaging the numbers to look better!

Yes this. She is an ad man’s dream isn’t she? Way to make sure she spends the rest of her life believing that a) Her worth is in her physical appearance and b) That she needs to ‘fix’ herself. There are men in offices at the top of all these industries making £££££ out of women’s insecurities. (And men’s too now that many men believe they must groom themselves and buy expensive products).

I can’t bear how shallow it all is. This isn’t ‘self care’. Self care is going for a nice walk in nature or having a bath or cuddling a dog or having a chat with a good friend or making yourself something lovely to eat or doing some yoga. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mrsttcno1 · 30/10/2024 11:41

There’s just no way those things add up to that price really.

I’ve had most of them at some point or other and even at a high end place you’d struggle to spend £1000 on the things listed.

Hair can be expensive but not for just a blow dry even at a high end place.

yipyipyop · 30/10/2024 11:42

I agree with pp. no way would that add up to £2k a month! Sounds ridiculous though

Nogaxeh · 30/10/2024 12:20

It's not what I would spend £2k a month on, but I'm sure people would find my (more modest) spending habits weird.

There were a few pieces of sculpture that I saw at a recent exhibition that I'd have been seriously tempted to buy if I had a spare couple of thousand every month. Other people might find it strange to spend €3,200 on a bit of rock, though.
